28th Genie Winners!

I am so thrilled that the Genie Awards returned to broadcasting the awards. Sandra Oh was a lovely host and being in proper Canadian fashion there was cheers for the Habs, speeches in English and in French, as well as political talk which including building awareness of and shunning Bill C-10 (for more see G&M article here).

One of the treats of the broadcast was the best director nominee's not only included clips from the films but also thoughts from the directors on the films and/or the process. In terms of speeches, both Sarah Polley and Gordon Pinsett had wonderful acceptance speeches and it was very \refreshing to see them with no anticipation of the orchestra quietly reminding them of time and being rushed off the stage?

Overall, Eastern Promises went home with the most wins with 7 * out of the 12 it was nominated for but it did feel like it was Away From Her's night, winning 6** of it's 7 nominations including film, director, actor, actress, supporting actress and adapted screenplay. Other wins are one of to each of the following: Shake Hands with the Devil, Silk, FIDO, Radiant City, Après Tout and Madame Tutli-Putli. How often does a zombie movie go home with and Art Direction award? I love Canadian film.

Congratulations to all the nominee's and winners it has been an excellent year for Canadian film.

*Eastern Promises was also awarded Special Award for Outstanding Achievement in Make-Up, upping it's total to 8 awards.

**The Claude Jutra Award for first-time feature filmmakers went to Sarah Polley for Away From Her, therefore upping the total of it's awards to 7 Genies.
