Fantasy as a Film Genre Show Notes
  • Fantasy Film as defined by wikipedia: "Fantasy films are films with fantastic themes, usually involving magic, supernatural events, make-believe creatures, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered to be distinct from science fiction film and horror film, although the genres do overlap."
  • Fantasy as defined by wikipedia: "Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place in fictional worlds where magic is common. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction in that it does not provide a logical (or pseudo logical) explanation for the scientifically impossible events that occur, though there is a great deal of overlap between the two (both are subgenres of speculative fiction)."
  • I mention that discussed films with supernatural elements separately back in October when I chatted about Supernatural as a Film Genre on Episode 12
  • Straight-up Fantasy: Lord of the Rings, Willow, The Golden Compass, The Dark Crystal, Dragonslayer and Legend
  • Bridging the Fantasy World & The 'Real' World: The Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The Never Ending Story, Inkheart, Skellig - The Owl Man and The Chronicles of Narnia series
  • Bridging the Two: Harry Potter series, because it has the acknowledgement of and depiction of both worlds although they are seen as separate cultures.
  • Historically Set Films with a little Magic: Ladyhawke, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Mummy
  • Dark Fantasy: The Seventh Seal, The Hour of the Wolf, Fanny and Alexander
  • 2010 Fantasy Films: Alice in Wonderland, The Last Airbender, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (guessing) and of course Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • My Faves: Harry Potter, Labyrinth
