Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday March 16, 2012! We have a heck of a lot of films out in release this week and it's an especially good lot for documentary (and Sesame Street!) fans with The Bloor Hot Docs cinema opening it's doors for it's first week of regular releases.
In limited release this week we have 9 limited releases and I'm chopping at the bit to see King of Devil's Island / Kongen av Bastøy with Stellan Skarsgård set in prison in the early 20th century Norway which is playing at the Carlton. Then we hot over to The Bloor which re-opens it's doors with the documentary goodness of Being Elmo: A Puppeteers Journey centred on on Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash (I almost wrote "Muppeteer") as well as Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel a documentary on prolific independent B-movie filmmaker Roger Corman. There are more documenataries to go around including Jennifer Baichwal's Payback, which is based of the Margaret Atwood book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, Jiro Dreams of Sushi following a master sushi chef and The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jane following the transformation of Genesis P-Orridge and Lady Jaye Breyer P'Orridge to become more and more like each other. Getting to the more fictional we have Being Flynn which is actually based on a true story and then Off World which looks amazing and heartbreaking, and our comedy of the limited releases is Casa de mi Padre starring Will Ferrell.
In wide release this week we have 2 releases and the biggie is 21 Jump Street, a reboot of the 1980's TV show about cops going undercover to suss out the drug scene in high school and this new version starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill certainly is going for comedy as it's a approach and looks pretty good. Rounding out the releases is Jeff, Who Lives at Home starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms; directed by The Duplass Brothers (Cyrus, Baghead).
Have a great weekend!

DVD Releases for March 13, 2012
Time to take a look at a selection of DVD releases for Tuesday March 13, 2012!
- Neverlost Really fascinating mind-bender thriller following a man caught between two world of the current and memory, questioning which is the better one of the imperfect choices. Very impressive performance by Ryan Barrett in the main role, & strongly recommend to speculative fiction fans (not currently available on amazon.com).
- The Three Musketeers Extremely fun adaptation of the dense adventure story by Alexandre Dumas which was our Book to Film Club selection from August 2011. Highly recommend for adventure-happy film folk.
- Monsieur Lazhar Genie-winning inspiring teacher films that I can't *wait* to see! (not currently available on amazon.com)
- Melancholia This film by Lars von Trier won me over with it's artistic vision, fantastic performance, and amazing fusion of the bizarre & the beautiful. One of my faves of 2011 (US price on Amazon.com is a STEAL at $13.49).
- My Week With Marilyn Michelle Williams stars as Marilyn Monroe is this curious biopic that follows her and Laurence Olivier (played by Kenneth Branagh) though the eyes of his employee (played by Eddie Redmayne). Recipe for awesome that I need to see.
- The Son of No One Channing Tatum stats in the cop/crime film centred on a now-adult trying to lead a quiet family life after growing up in the projects.
- Happy Feet 2 The dancing penguins return in the animated sequel.
- Young Adult stars Charlize Theron as a woman who returns to her home town to woo her high school crush, even though he's married with kids. Also stars Patton Oswald. I really want to see this one.
- The Swell Season concert/documentary film starring Oscar winning music duo from Once: Glen Handsard & Marketa Irglova.
- The Adventures of Tintin Animated adventure film based on the books of Tin Tin starring the voice talents of Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig & Andy Serkis.
- Loosies I am quite interested to see this New York set film written by Peter Facinelli, which he also stars in alongside Jaimie Alexander & Michael Madsen.
- The Descendants Highly acclaimed drama from director Alexander Payne (Sideways) starring George Clooney.
- The Guild Season 5 I haven't seen The Guild in a few seasons but I've loved every episode of this webseries following the lives behind players in a guild of a fictional MMORPG.
- Neverland Peter Pan fantasy miniseries starring Rhys Ifans that aired on Space just over the past Christmas holidays.
- Call Me Fitz - Season 2 Cutting comedy series starring Jason Priestly as a moral-less car salesman.
- The Killing: The Complete First Season AMC Original series (although a remake of a Danish series), this crime show following a murder got some pretty good reviews but I couldn't quite get into it. It heads into season 2 on April 1, 2012.
- Leprechaun: Pot of Gore Collection with all 6 Leprechaun films. And here I was thinking there was only 3!

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "GCB"
The Sked: MARCH MADNESS -- Ratings Outlook
March Madness, the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, kicks off this week on CBS and a trio of cable networks (TNT, TBS and TruTV) with University of Kentucky, Michigan State, Syracuse and University of North Carolina the #1 seeds in the four regions. The ratings impact in prime time is minimal the first week but builds steadily in the second and third weeks as CBS becomes the exclusive broadcaster.
CBS coverage Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights should average less than a 2 rating with Adults 18-49 this week, similar to last year's format when CBS and the three cable partners split the games with each contest running nationally against the others. Until 2010, CBS covered the entire tournament and regionalized the games, and if a game was unusually lopsided that section of the country got switched to a more exciting contest. CBS had higher ratings in the first week in the old format broadcasting solo, but the additional cable partners allow them to afford the entire tournament and keep the crown jewel, the championship game, on over-the-air television.
Next week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights CBS should bounce around a 3 rating, while the real value of March Madness is cashed in when the calendar turns to April with a 7 rating or more on Monday, April 2. Now go fill out your bracket.

INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE NUMBERS through March 11
John Carter joins the worldwide box office chart, ranked at #13 out of 44 wide-release films over the past three months. We are currently estimating John Carter could total $75 million in North America, but the overseas total to date is already $70 million. If the overseas total ends up around $125 million, the film could end up with a worldwide total just behind Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, moving up to a #6 or #7 ranking. Click "read more" to see the updated chart.
The other films opening this weekend, Silent House and A Thousand Words, are dead last in the worldwide ranking, each with little chance of moving their overseas total above the current level of zero.
The Lorax has only grossed $2 million total to date overseas, in what appears to be an extremely slow rollout beyond North America.
[2012.03.12] KO CHEN-TUNG WILL BE IN A LOVE TRIANGLE WITH ANGELABABY
courtesy of on.cc |
Popular Taiwan idol Ko Chen-Tung and Angelababy will work together for the first time on the Clarence Ford (Fok Yiu Leung) new romantic film. Yesterday, Ko Chen-Tung secretly came to Hong Kong for pre production work. Only a few lucky fans ran into their idols at the airport and could not be more pleased.
Taiwan hunk Ko Chen-Tung and Angelababy lately have become new film industry favorites. Ko Chen-Tung last year won the Golden Horse Award Best New Actor. Many directors have made offers to him. Baby has long been a rising film star, making film after film. Two popular actors will work together for the first time on the Fok Yiu leung directed new film JING CHUP MUK YU (DETECTIVE SWEET WORDS), a romantic film that will consist of three stories. Ko Chen-Tung and Baby will star in one of the story and be in a love triangle with Bosco Wong Chung Chak who will play Baby's superior! In another story "the Strongest of the Universe" Donnie Yen Chi Tan will be paired with Taiwan otaku godden Michelle Chen.

[2012.03.12] SHU QI PASSES PARENTHOOD PLAN TO YOUNGER BROTHER

Shu Qi and Shawn Yue Man Lok yesterday promoted their film THE SECOND WOMAN (CHING MAI) in Tsuen Wan. Because Shu Qi played twins in the film, the event arranged for two pairs of twins to play games.
Shu Qi said that her father and uncle were twins, thus she had a chance to have twins. Actually she would be rather happy to have two at once. As for when, Shu Qi said that she wanted to pass the plan to her younger brother as she would have to wait until she was with someone. When rumored boyfriend Wang Leehom was mentioned, Shu Qi said, "This is ancient history, you ask and ask again, spread and spread again, I am bothered even if you are not. (Didn't you go on vacation together?) No, next question." She mentioned online earlier that she was upset at her film LOVE being pirated, Shu Qi explained that only because she saw people watching the DVD on their computers she mentioned the advantages of going
to the movies. It was not a big deal that it turned out to be. Shu Qi said, "I am not upset, of course after working hard on a movie I want it to do well at the box office."
Lok Jai's other film LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) will be released at the same time. Was he worried about competing with himself? Lok Jai joked that he was so busy with promotions that he was dizzy, everyday he had no idea even about where he was.
[2012.03.12] ELANNE KONG HOPES HER PERFORMANCE CAN TOUCH VIEWERS
courtesy of takungpao.com |
Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam and director Herman Yau Lai To yesterday attended a forum with their film LOVE LIFTING (GO GUI OI) advanced screening viewers. The film opened earlier in the Mainland, but Elanne did not see the film because To Man Jat asked her to wait and watch at the Hong Kong premiere together. Even though she did not see the film yet, she had the director on hand and were still able to share production
highlight with the audience.
The film is released now, half a year after its completion, and ran into strong competition from A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH). Elaine said, "That's good too. They are doing great at the box office, Hong Kong films are films that need love, hopefully everyone will spread the word. After our film's Mainland release, everyday many posted on Ah Jat's and my microblog to say it was so touching that they cried from watching it." Elaine also said that viewers at the Mainland premiere were teary eyed. A woman said that she normally did not treat her husband too well, after watching the movie she wanted to treat him better as she learned to
cherish those in front of her. This time she gained weight to play the weightlifter and was injured as well, would she like to win an award for her enormous sacrifices? She said about her first heart warming film, "I only hope that viewers would be moved to tears."
[2012.03.12] NICK CHEUNG SPENDS TIME TO CULTIVATE EMOTIONS FOR SILENT ROLE
courtesy of on.cc |

The film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) two nights ago held its Mongkok premiere. Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Janice Man Wing Shan, Kay Tse On Kay, Candy Yu On On, Michael Wong Man Tak all attended. Everyone coordinated with the film and performed a gun firing ceremony.
Earlier the film received great responses from numerous Mainland screenings. Was Ka Fai confident about its Hong Kong box office? He said that he would be nervous before the film release and hoped for more and more at the box office. Ka Fai this time had no line at all. Was it great not to have to remember any line? Ka Fai said, "On a certain level it's good, but because of that I had to express emotions through expressions and body language. I needed to spend even more time and effort to cultivate my emotions. The feeling is like I am making a silent film." Tse On Kay said that she was afraid of Ka Fai because he often hid in a corner to cultivate emotions. Later she realized that Ka Fai actually knew how to laugh.
In addition, Yu On On earlier was rumored to be dating a younger man. Two nights ago she said that he was her co-star in the play BOUNDLESS MOVEMENT (PIN DEI FONG FEI), Ling Man Lung. Because in the play they played mother and son, they got along so well during their performance that she treated him like a "son" just like she treated Janice Man like a daughter. She said that Ling Man Lung was somewhat upset because he was not used to being reported and stated that he was not pursuing her. She too would not date anyone around his daughter's age and joked that she was prepared to introduce girls to Ling Man Lung. Would she introduce Janice Man? Janice Man immediately declined, claiming that she was a traditional person and "siblings" could not possibly date.
After the premiere the group attended an after party. Ka Fai was in great spirit. He not only thanked everyone for their support but also asked them what they thought about the movie. Janice Man was teary eyed from Ka Fai's performance. That night her mother also came in support of her. Tse On Kay, whose birthday will be on March 13, had to rush to an advanced birthday party that her friends were holding for her. She only chatted with Ka Fai for awhile before leaving. When Ka Fai left the party loyal fans presented him with gifts to wish for box office success for his film. Ka Fai chatted with fans and posed for photos, finally leaving early in the morning.
[2012.03.12] ANDY LAU PREPARES A SCRIPT TO FULFILL HIS DIRECTOR DREAM
courtesy of takungpao.com |
Winning multiple international awards, the film A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) since its March 8 release has performed ideally at the box office. Its opening box office was 3.1 million. As for noon yesterday it accumulated 6.2 million. Wa Jai and Deanie Ip Tak Han were still busy with the film promotion. Lau Tak Wa even turned the film's production process into a new book titled MY 30 WORK DAYS: A SIMPLE LIFE PRODUCTION DIARY. Two days ago Wa Jai attended a book signing in Taiwan. When the news of Wa Jai's Taiwan visit went out, Wa Jai fans immediately rushed to buy the new book and the publisher had to print another edition in an emergency. Since last Tuesday's advanced sales to its official release, another edition was needed in ten short days. The book signing was originally slated for 300 fans, but due to the overwhelming advanced sales the number increased in the last minute to 500 fans.
Lau Tak Wa said that he has always had a dream to direct, he has already prepared a script. Wa Jai pointed out that when he joined the television actor training class he originally wanted to study screen writing and directing, but under the instructor's encouragement he stumbled his way into becoming an actor. However his dream to direct remained in his heart. He pointed out that a year ago he originally wanted to make his film but he ran into Ann Hui On Wa, so he made A SIMPLE LIFE. He also said that Taiwan film development was thriving. After seeing Doze Niu Chen-Zer and Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun)'s work as directors he thought they were amazing. He too had to work hard on catching up.
[2012.03.12] SHAWN YUE CALLS WORKING WITH MINI YANG GREAT
courtesy of takungpao.com |
Yesterday, Hong Kong director Pang Ho Cheung brought the flavorful romantic comedy LOVE IN THE BUFF (CHUN GIU YU JI MING) to Shenzhen and held an advanced screening. After the show lead actor Shawn Yue Man Lok arrived in support and admitted that he liked Mini Yang Mi's flight attendant look in the film very much. The kiss scene with Beijing girl Yang Mi even made him feel bashful. However, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa revealed earlier, "During the intimate scene, the director in order to demonstrate to Yang Mi even personally performed an ambiguous show with Yue Man Lok. The passion was endless."
The "internet slang" dialogue in LOVE IN THE BUFF was very viewer friendly. The ordinary film content even due to "Pang's heavy ingredient" additions was uniquely savory. Yang Mi in the film played a post 90 flight attendant who not only had a busty hot pant performance but also an intellectual uniform look. The four characters in the film represented four types of people in the romantic world.
Speaking of working with Yang Mi, Yue Man Lok had nothing but praise. "Yang Mi's character has natural requirements, she has to meet those conditions to be able to play it. Yang Mi's figure is great, her acting also adds color and brings life to this character." Why would Chi Ming be attracted to Youyou? Yue Man Lok joked, "Youyou in the film is the opposite of Chun Giu. Her figure is great, she is younger than Chun Giu, these conditions would easily attract Cheung Chi Ming to her."
In the film, Pang Ho Cheung's romantic mottoes were endless. "You have to be mentally ready when you hang out, either you run into him or he runs into you"; "Life is so long, you are bound to fall for several scumbags"; "Some things don't need to be finished in one night. Some thing won't happen again if you miss it tonight" and others all contain wisdom but are also viewer friendly. Pang Ho Cheung has put this type of "art comes from life yet is higher than life" creative ideas in their original flavors into the film.

SHOWBUZZDAILY WEEKEND BOXOFFICE SCORECARD
WEEKEND STUDIO ESTIMATES March 9-11
The weekend studio estimates (based on Friday and Saturday actuals and projections for Sunday) are coming in slightly stronger than the weekend numbers posted yesterday (based on Friday actuals only). The box office volume for the top 12 films is now looking like a decent $123 million for the weekend, up 4% from last year's weekend and up 10% from the weekend's average for the past four years. Disney is claiming John Carter will finish the weekend with $30.6 million. Let's all play pretend and give Disney the pleasure of 24 hours of thinking they crossed the $30 million threshold for the opening weekend. This seems like a classic case of "rounding up" on Sunday morning to make an opening number seem a little better, but it doesn't change the fact that John Carter is going to be a catastrophe financially: maybe $75 million domestic and $125 million overseas for $200 million worldwide. Less the theater owners' portion and adding in ancillary revenues like home video, video on demand, TV rights and so on, the studio might keep around $200 million versus a massive $400+ million expenditure on production and marketing.
The ShowbuzzDaily Domestic Final estimates now show that the films opening wide this weekend are headed for: John Carter ($75 million), Silent House ($13 million) and A Thousand Words ($11 million).
The second week movies: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax ($220 million, adjusted down slightly) and Project X ($67 million, steady).
The third week movies: Act of Valor ($73 million, adjusted back down slightly), Tyler Perry's Good Deeds ($35 million, adjusted down slightly), Wanderlust ($20 million, down slightly) and Gone ($12 million, steady).
