[2011.09.30] CISSY WANG WILL NOT KEEP HER CHILDREN FROM SHOW BUSINESS

courtesy of takungpao.com

Two nights ago an international magazine held a Hong Kong edition event.  Cissy Wang made an appearance and revealed that after the event she would visit her husband Donnie Yen Chi Tan on the set.  Despite the hurricane she promised her husband and would bring food to treat everyone.

Cissy said that earlier when her husband was working on WU XIA in Yunnan, she brought their children to visit.  That day her husband worked on an arm chopping scene, their daughter was so scared that she did not dare to get closer.  It was perfect for them to learn that movies were fake and also how difficult their father's job was.  With both parents in show business, if their children in the future wanted to get into the
business Cissy said, "I wouldn't stop them but I would tell them how difficult making a movie is, in particular the action scenes.  Chi Tan has many injuries.  (Has anyone asked your family to guest star?)  Yes, but my son can't yet.  He isn't shy and has no problem with kung fu, but he needs me to tell him from the side.  He may not be able to deliver his lines."

The Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Eva Huang Shengyi and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin starred THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE (BAK SEH CHUEN SHUEN) two nights ago held a premiere in Causeway Bay.

Lee Nin Kit did not accept any media interview only did a brief question and answer segment with the host.  Director Ching Siu Tung pointed out, THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE was the most difficult
fight film for Lee Nin Kit in the past ten years.  Lee Nin Kit said that this time was not considered difficult.  He joked, "Attending promotions to me is even more difficult."  Ching Siu Tung also said that every actor
worked on this film until they got sick due to the dozen or so degree below zero Celsius climate.  he said, "We still used the wind machine to create the drifting feeling!"  Ah Sa also admitted that working in the water in the chilly winter without any protective clothing was very tough, luckily the director prepared ginger tea for them to keep warm.

Ah Sa revealed that when she went shoe shopping she ran into "Big Beauty" Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha) and Ti Lung's wife Tao Man Ming.  She said, "I asked them for their opinions.  Mrs. Ti Lung thought the shoes were pretty."

Ah Sa joked that every time she went clothes shopping she ran into "guiding light".  Last time in Venice she saw Deanie Ip Tak Han.  This time she ran into Lam Ching Ha for the first time.  As for her impression, she said, "I feel she is very well maintained."

Huang Shengyi dressed provocatively two nights ago.  She admitted that she did not use any tape and took the chance to urge the media not to keep staring at her chest.  She revealed that next month she will again
come to Hong Kong for an action comedy.

Shengyi said, "For this movie I have already trained over two months in martial arts, thus with another action film I don't need to practice more."  Shengyi revealed that she also did not need to practice earlier for a martial art performance in a commercial.  Thus she got her return for all her hard work.  Shengyi also pointed out that SORCERER was the most difficult because thus she learned a lot of action techniques.  She hoped to have more chances to work on action films in the future.  She said, "Kung fu films sell better and have more overseas market."

2011 FIRST youth film festival two nights ago took place at the Xinning Qinghai University.  Zhang Ziyi with LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI) won Best Actress again and the "the Chinese filmmaker with the most international university student attention".  Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) with OVERHEARD 2 (SIT TING FUNG WON 2) defeated SHAOLIN (SUN SIU LUM JI) and DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME (DIK YUN KIT ji TUNG TIN DAI GOK)'s Andy Lau Tak Wa to win Best Actor.  In the Best Actress category, Zhang Ziyi had over 30,000 votes more than second place Fan Bingbing.

This event hoped through young university student exchanges to discover even more new filmmakers.  When jury members and guest presenters Teddy Chan Tak Sum and Guan Hu presented the award to Zhang Ziyi, she humorously said, "I too just ended my summer vacation.  I am preparing to start school with my course DANGEROUS LIAISON, thank you everyone for your recognition and high grade of my course last year LOVE FOR LIFE.  I hope very much to have the chance to work with young directors in the future.  I too hope that I will be able to provide them with an even better platform, for young filmmakers with ideas in China to be able to display their own stage."  At the same time she again won the "Chinese filmmaker with the most international university student attention".  She took a deep breath, carried that heavy "brick", smiled and said, "Tonight all the friends who won said that this award was heavy like a brick.  I too told friends that this could be called the 'youth film golden brick award'.  I volunteer to be the best spokesperson."

Ziyi also said, "Among Chinese actresses I have to the one who have been beaten with bricks the most and the most viciously.  Yet I want to tell everyone, as long as you still have a breath, as long as you haven't been beaten to death, you have to bravely stand up and happily run toward your goal and your dream."  This self ridicule won the cheers and the applause of the entire venue.  Later reporters asked her about her gossip with Leon Lai Ming.  She said, "It's absurd.  I hope from now on people will keep making up stories for me, after fooling reporters they can fool me."

[2011.09.30] JEANA HO DUMPS LAZY BOYFRIEND

DaDa Chen Jing, Jeana Ho Pui Yu, Shiga Lin Si Nga and others two nights ago attended the film LAN KWAI FONG (HEI OI YEH PO)'s celebration banquet.  Jeana earlier broke up with her boyfriend.  She said, "We separated to cool down.  Earlier the emotions were very complicated, now they are much better.  I have to turn sorrow into appetite.  I asked producer (Wilson) Chin Kwok Wai to cover my food and drinks for a month and keep celebrating."

Jeana hoped to win back "custody" of her dog.  Did he not agreed?  She said, "he may want to keep a strand of connection.  Right now sleeping alone is very dry.  Every night I have to drink more than half a bottle of red wine before I am able to sleep, like I am forced to knock myself out.  So I want to have my 'daughter' Gigi to keep me company."  She said that their break up was amicable.  She said, "I have been in the business for two years.  At first at the agency our relationship was OK.  This year after I gained my independence our pace was different.  I am running, he seems to be walking."  Did she feel her boyfriend was not progressing?  She said, "I am financially stable on my own.  If it's for money, I don't have to get into the business.  All I have to do is meeting someone rich.  Ultimately now I have to adjust my pace."  She admitted that the difference was in the pace of "making money".  Did she feel her boyfriend was lazy?  She said, "OK, he lives in the village.  Earlier when I stayed at the village for one night I thought I got lazy and had to jump back out again.  The village life is like a holiday."

Earlier Chen Jing was caught going to see Dior Cheng Yi Kin's concert in Macau and spent the night with Eddie Li Yu Yeung.  She stated that they were just friends.  DaDa said, "A friend outside the business invited both of us, he didn't ask me.  Originally I didn't know he would go."  She said that they met at work.  Did she feel he was pursuing her?  She said, "I don't sense it.  (Are you after him?)  Even less, I don't know about the future, right now we are good friends.  (Would you consider him?)  I won't know until the pursuit is on.  It isn't yet."  DaDa clarified that they did not spend the night together.

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "Whitney"

A lot can happen between the creation of a TV pilot in the spring and production of episodes for the regular season:  a writing/producing team is hired, audience focus groups weigh in, networks and studios (which may have had their own turnover in the off-season) give plenty of notes, both helpful and otherwise, and critics begin to rear their ugly heads.  The results can include changes to tone, pace, casting and even story.  Here at THE SKED, we're going to look past the pilots and present reviews of the first regular episodes of this year's new series as well.

Previously... on WHITNEY: Whitney (show creator Whitney Cummings) and Alex (Chris D'Elia) have been a committed unmarried couple for 3 years, and the show is about them dealing with the challenges of long-term togetherness even without a wedding ring.  Each has 2 designated friends:  Roxanne and Lily for her (Rhea Seehorn and Zoe-Lister Jones), and Mark and Neal for him (Dan O'Brien and Maulik Pancholy); just to make things even more symmetrical, Roxanne and Mark are single, while Lily and Neal are married to each other.

Episode 2:  Although Whitney did just fine in its premiere after last week's The Office, it remains a very uncomfortable creative fit with the 3 NBC comedies that precede it on Thursdays.  It's an old-fashioned multi-camera sitcom filmed before a live studio audience, very much in the classically brassy set-up/punchline set-up/punchline style.

Oddly, the network has chosen back-to-back episodes about roleplaying to introduce the show:  the pilot had Whitney donning a sexy nurse's outfit to bring heat back to the relationship, and the second episode, written by Cummings, is entirely concerned with Whitney insisting that since she and Alex never had a "first date" (they met at a bar and drunkenly slept together the same night), the two of them have to pretend to be starting their romance anew.  This leads to her not letting him in their apartment after the date goes badly, and then both of them acting like hackneyed potential new couples, alternately pretending not to care about the other and managing to stay in view.

None of this is particularly funny:  when Whitney is waiting for Alex to put on her coat as a gentleman would, he tells her to bend her arm because it's like putting a jacket on a Christmas tree; later, when she's trying to look sexy, she catches her heel in a floor grating and hobbles away on one shoe, pretending the stuck one isn't hers. The big gag at the end has Lily kissing Whitney in a bar ("I went to Vassar," she explains) so as to attract Alex.  Much more fundamental, though, is the fact that Cummings and D'Elia have no real chemistry together, comedic or romantic--if the pair really were dating for the first time, there'd be no reason to think they'd stay together, which presumably isn't the point the show is trying to make.  Unlike most modern sitcoms, Whitney so far isn't an ensemble show with multiple plotlines, either--the friend characters have no lives of their own, and in the second episode they exist only to service the Whitney/Alex story, which makes the show's pace feel comparatively slow.

Whitney seems to be aimed at a completely different audience than the one that enjoys Community, Parks & Recreation and The Office, and one with considerably more downscale taste.    Perhaps the show will continue thriving among them anyway--although it'll be very interesting to see what happens on October 6, when FOX will air X-Factor for only 90 minutes and stunt a (rerun) episode of New Girl at 9:30--but even if it does, that will just go to show that logic (and sometimes quality) mean little in the world of TV.

Original Verdict:  If Nothing Else Is On...

Pilot + 1:  Even Less Promising Than It Seemed Before

THE SKED PILOT REPORT: CBS's "How To Be A Gentleman" - PREMIERING TONIGHT

Disclaimer:  Network pilots now in circulation are not necessarily in the form that will air in the Fall.  Pilots are often reedited and rescored, and in some cases even recast or reshot.  So these critiques shouldn't be taken as full TV pilot reviews, but rather as a guide to the general style and content of the new shows coming your way.

HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN -  Thursday 8:30PM on CBS:  Potential DVR Alert

Considering how utterly contrived it is, HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN is a surprisingly pleasant half-hour of television.  Whitney Cummings may have written her own star vehicle sitcom, but David Hornsby has done her one better by writing and starring in one that's actually promising and funny.  (OK, Cummings also co-wrote 2 Broke Girls, so she has 2 new shows on the air, but that's just mediocrity in bulk.)

"Based" on books of modern etiquette for men by Thomas Nelson, How To Be A Gentleman gives us Hornsby as Alan, writer of a magazine column on the subject.  Alan is gentlemanly to the point of snobbery, concerned as much with when it is and isn't appropriate to wear a vest as with principles of courtesy.  His sister (Mary Lynn Rajskub) finds him hard to take, and as a birthday present she gives him a gift certificate to a personal training session at a local gym, knowing a gentleman can't ignore any gift he's received.  Well, guess what--it turns out the personal trainer is Bert (Kevin Dillon), who used to bully Alan in high school and is now a PG-13 version of Johnny Drama from Entourage.  Since, as it happens, Alan's magazine has been taken over and he's being forced to write a less polite version of his column, he agrees to be taken under Bert's wing and taught about modern manhood.

You can certainly see the jokes coming in Gentleman, but the script is witty enough to keep them amusing.  Also, Pam Fryman directed the pilot, and she brings the same deft touch she supplies regularly to How I Met Your Mother, underplaying the obvious.  The cast also helps:  Hornsby knows that Alan is a bit of a cartoon, but he manages not to let him become a prig.  Dillon is so much in his own wheelhouse that his biggest worry should be typecasting.  It's always great to see Rajskub (even if, on some level, she'll always be Chloe from 24), and sharp talents like Rhys Darby (as Rajskub's husband) and Dave Foley (as Alan's boss) add to the ensemble.

It's instructive to look at How To Be A Gentleman in comparison to some of the other men-being-men sitcoms we're getting this season, like Man Up and Last Man Standing.  Here, the characters all have a little shading to them (they actually seem to like each other), and the script doesn't just roll from one purported punchline to the next; these are people you might want to revisit the following week.

Gentleman has perhaps the most enviable timeslot of any new series this year:  not only does it follow the hit Big Bang Theory in its hour, but it's a model of compatibility with its lead-in.  Mitch Metcalf's Thursday projection has it in 2d place for the slot, just barely behind FOX's X-Factor, and ahead of Charlie's Angels and Parks & Recreation.  The show, frankly, isn't in the same league as its NBC competition (although in fairness, Parks & Rec took a season to find its own footing).  But it's not bad, and in network TV, "not bad" in the right timeslot is often more than good enough.

THE SKED: Wednesday Ratings - Network Scorecard

Everyone was down, as the new season started to settle in on itself--but some were down more than others.

ABC:  MODERN FAMILY is doing quite spectacularly, more than 20% above last season's average.  The results in other timeslots were more mixed.  SUBURGATORY had a very nice debut at 8:30 (again, kudos to ABC Marketing this Fall), but it's a little disappointing that THE MIDDLE wasn't able to capitalize on NBC's increasing woes at 8PM, although it was still slightly above last season's average.   HAPPY ENDINGS was up a whopping 50% from its average last season, and almost double last year's season finale (which was admittedly in the less attractive 10:30PM slot)--and by the way, rightly so, since in a way Happy Endings had last year's most impressive reboot, miraculously becoming funny after a terrible first few episodes.  REVENGE is still OK, a solid second place in its timeslot, but it's no longer looking like a hit (other than in comparison to last season's disaster The Whole Truth)--and because of its serialized nature, once viewers have left, it'll be awfully hard to get them back.

FOX:  More of the same for X FACTOR:  it's not a blockbuster, but it's a big enough hit to win the night.  I'm not sure how FOX's coverage of the baseball post-season will affect X Factor's schedule over the next few weeks, but if the show has to skip many episodes, that'll be something to keep an eye on.

NBC:  UP ALL NIGHT has pushed past being a dubious success story to a show on the brink of trouble.  Last night's 2.1 puts its numbers squarely into COMMUNITY/PARKS & RECREATION territory, and as much as I love those shows, that's not where you want your big new comedy to be.  FREE AGENTS is just waiting for its cancellation notice, which may be delayed for PR reasons if NBC doesn't want to be the first network to admit to Fall failure.  HARRY'S LAW can't even pull in its presumed older audience, let alone 18-49s.  And the arrival of Danny Pino did nothing for SVU--if the show falls any lower than its current 2.0, it would be a candidate for cancellation anywhere but NBC, where they have too many bigger problems.

CBS:  Stability, thy name is CBS.  SURVIVOR and CSI barely budged from last week, and although CRIMINAL MINDS is now a bit below last season's average, it's facing very strong competition from Modern Family and X Factor.

CW:  H84 was slightly less DOA than last week (it's unutterably sad to think that may be because Kim Kardashian was featured), and AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL continues to be more than 30% below last season's average.

Tonight, quite a few shows will be airing their second episodes and waiting to find out how many viewers come back for more (look for plenty of Pilot + 1 Reviews tonight).  For NBC, the critical numbers will be for The Office and Whitney in the 9PM hour, which is all that's keeping the network from complete non-football oblivion.
