Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday August 22, 2008! Huge number of releases this week count 'em up and you are gonna get ten films which certainly means there should be something for everyone.
Seven of the releases are limited release including the spectacular Boy A, which I would highly recommend for the tour de force performance by Andrew Garfield and phenomenal story. If you are looking for some giggles I suspect that Hamlet 2 would be in order as it follows a failed actor turned teacher who needs to save the school drama program, and it looks hilarious. If you'd rather get a tad more serious with a touch of sweet we have we have Ben Kingsley and Penélope Cruz in Elegy which is defined as: A mournful or melancholy poem (yes, I looked it up). But Elegy isn't the only drama/romance this week, we also have Henry Poole Is Here which also adds some comedy to the mix as well. Critical acclaim is all around many of this weeks limited releases including the war film Beaufort, the border crossing drama Frozen River and Mongolian set heart wrenching drama Tuya's Marriage - all three films have an over 80% rating over at Rotten Tomatoes.
In wide release this week we have Death Race which IMDb lists as a sequel to the 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000 with David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone, however it feels more like a revisioning of the idea in a different setting. Also in wide release we get warmed up for the school season with the college themed The House Bunny where the house mother is former bunny, however I'm more likely to and suggest checking out The Longshots which is based on a true story of a girl football player starring Keke Palmer and Ice Cube.
Have a great weekend!
