DVD Releases for April 13. 2010

This week it's Canadian heavy for DVD releases, starting with one of my favourite films of the year so far with La Donation / The Legacy, the third film in Bernard Émond humanist trilogy exploring Faith (La neuvaine), Hope (Contre toute espérance). All three films are excellent and can be seen as a trilogy or separately. La Donation / The Legacy is a great watch, emotionally compelling with beautifully natural performances. I highly recommend it and it's sure to be on my list of favourite films for 2010.

It's absolutely spectacular timing for the release of Polytechnique (being released with 1 and 2 Disc options on DVD), considering just last night it took home 9 Genie Awards including best picture, director, actress, supporting actor along with cinematography and sound. The film is a dramatization based on the 1989 Montreal Massacre and handles the subject matter with care and respect that is rarely seen. It's not an easy watch, but it's a very important and great film.

Keeping it Canadian we also have the super hero with no actual superpowers film Defendor starring Woody Harrelson and French Canadian fantasy film Babine.

Not tons of new releases this week but have some classics out in new forms including a sweet price on Essential Art House version of Fellini's 8 1/2 at $23.99 CAD.

Out in TV land there is the complete series of 2002 TV show Haunted, starring Matthew Fox out on DVD today.

We also have the British comedy Pirate Radio (previously titled The Boat that Rocked) and crime/thriller Traitor starring Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce.
