Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday August 13, 2010! This is one of those weeks where we are just overwhelmed with fantastic titles. We have 10 films opening on Friday and one midweek release next week, and on top of all that the Toronto After Dark Film Festival opens tonight.
In limited release this week we have such an amazing selection of films to enjoy that it's just not fair, I mean.. how are we suppose to find time to see them all because there are so many that truly are exceptional. I've been raving about the UK thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed ever since I saw it at last years TIFF and it's a film you really don't want to know anything about - if you like thrillers, see it - full stop. It's fantastic. More amazing films this week include the amazing character driven Australian film Animal Kingdom and sensational documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. I've also heard great things about the food centric comedy Soul Kitchen and Mesrine: Killer Instinct which stars Vincent Cassel as a French gangster. We also have the Filipino film If I Knew What You Said a music centric romance of a deaf boy and a hearing girl that meet at camp. Also out this week in limited release is the Bollywood film Peepli Live.
It's also a huge week for wide release with some serious heavy hitters. I know I'm heading out to see Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts and based on the memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert who travelled to Italy, India & Indonesia after her divorce. We also have The Expendables, which I am also super interested in because I like so many watch all thoss 80's actions movies and am more than happy to see Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren on the screen again, especially if they are alongside Jason Statham, Jet Li and so many others. On a slightly difference frequency of geekdar we have Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, based on the graphic novels, directed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead), and stars Michael Cera who has to 'defeat' the 7 enemies of his new girlfriend and the film is set in and filmed on our home ground here in Toronto,
We also have a midweek release next week with the Twilight spoof, Vampires Suck. I keep trying to figure out who the audience is for that one because you really need knowledge of the film to get it. Perhaps it's for bored boyfriends? Mind you, I did laugh an embarrassing amount during the trailer.

Have a great weekend!
