In SACRIFICE (ORPHAN OF ZHAO), Huang Xiaoming played a young general Han Jue who in a moment of weakness released the Ge You played Cheng Ying and got into trouble as he suffered a blow to the head. Finally he and Cheng Ying formed an alliance of vengeance to help the orphan of Zhao complete his revenge. Huang Xiaoming felt that Han Jue in my mind was a successful idealist. For honor he made a self sacrifice, which was where the character touched him the most. From the most initial design, Han Jue's wound was on the arm. Yet he asked the director for the scar to be on the character face because the scar would make the character's fall even greater and the image even more ruined and tough. Huang Xiaoming honestly hoped through the Han Jue character he would be able to show everyone his hard work and break through in acting. He said, ORPHAN OF ZHAO was a major turning point in his acting career. He described his current state of emotions as "no fear of being spoiled or shamed, watching flowers bloom and fall at the pavilion; no intention to stay or leave, watching clouds twist and turn in the sky".

Chen Kaige made a surprise appearance in the interview program and shared with everyone the Huang Xiaoming in his eyes. In the director's eyes, Huang Xiaoming was a kind person who was the same inside and out. It was a quality that was very rare in this industry. "In this circle often when something gets bigger and bigger, as fame grows larger, the more people are afraid of getting hurt......thus gradually they have a layer of masks. He however isn't like this. He is a very sincere person. Thus the scar on Xiaoming's face is intended for him to shed his handsome burden and become a real him."

ORPHAN OF ZHAO was Chen Kaige and Huang Xiaoming's first collaboration. Before this, Chen Kaige always felt that Huang Xiaoming was an idol star who played his handsome and cool side. Yet after working together his view was changed greatly. "Actually everyone who wants to
become an actor finally wants to shake off the world 'idol'. This is a transformation process. Xiaoming was always sincere and respectful about his characters and work, which remained me of when I worked with (Leslie) Cheung Kwok Wing years ago. He too was very handsome, sitting there he did not say much. His hand shook slightly as he smoked......"
