... and here we go. BREAKING DAWN PART 1 narrowly set a Twilight franchise record last night with the 2d highest midnight screening grosses on record, $30.25M. This was (very slightly) ahead of Eclipse's $30.1M last June, as well as the November 2009 opening of New Moon, which reached $26.3M for its midnight screenings. (It's not close, however, to the final Harry Potter's record $46.3M midnight.)
That midnight number for New Moon (a better comparison for the new picture because Eclipse opened over the 5-day 4th of July weekend) ended up being 36% of its Friday gross and 18% of its weekend total. If the same pattern applies to Breaking Dawn 1, in theory we could see a number for today that reaches $84M and a $164M weekend, which would put it right below the final Harry Potter's $169M on the all-time list. However, there's every reason to think that Breaking Dawn 1 will be more front-loaded than New Moon, lowering the multiples a bit. Still, no question that the Twi-hards have turned out in force for their beloved franchise.
