[2012.02.19] MAVIS FAN ALMOST TRIPS ON HER OWN DRESS

courtesy of takungpao.com

The Tsui Hark directed 3D wuxia film FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP) two nights ago appeared in Berlin.  He and his wife Shi Nansun, actors Mavis Fan Hiu Huen and Kwai Lun-Mei promoted there.  An avid tattoo fan, Siu Huen at the press conference and the premiere without hesitation displayed her arm tattoo and her wild side.  At the press conference she stepped on her long dress, luckily she did not embarrass herself.

At the press conference, Tsui Hark said that kung fu director King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen) could be said as his mentor.  His film DRAGON GATE INN was one of his favorite films.  20 years ago, he had a chance to remake NEW DRAGON GATE INN and over 2 years of working with Wu Kam Chuen he benefited a lot.  Thus FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE was a continuation of his memory and emotions as well as a salute to Wu Kam Chuen.  Shi Nansun said, "FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE has been interpreted continuously, like a Shakespearean play it is a classic is worth making and making again.  3D film is a very interesting attempt.  I believe the themes of love, friendship and justice was values that the entire world share."

An avid fan of the tattoo art, Siu Huen wore a long dress that showed off her exaggerated arm tattoo.  Yet she accidentally stepped on her dress and almost embarrassed herself in front of the foreign media.  She said that she has always been a Tsui Hark fan and hoped to play in the film a "water like woman".  Although it was very abstract the role was able to trigger her imagination.  At night she showed her wild side in a fiery short dress.

Kwai Lun-mei revealed that this year she has already received a great dramatic film and hoped to be able to get a musical film.  Speaking of her BLUE GATE CROSSING co-star Chen Bo-Lin, Siu Mei admitted because they wanted it to be perfect too much they have been very cautious with their collaboration opportunities.  She also very "ambitiously" said, "I really want us to grow up to a silver screen couple in the future like (Maggie) Cheung Man Yuk and (Tony) Leung Chiu Wai."

Still in Berlin to promote her husband Wang Quanan's WHITE DEER PLAIN, Kitty Zhang Yuqi humbly said that her male co-stars motivated her WHITE performance.  She even said that when working with actors of different styles she felt like she was riding a roller coaster.  Zhang Yuqi who still has not have a wedding ceremony with her husband admitted that she hoped to have it soon after her husband finished promoting this film and she would like to become a mother soon as well.

[2011.08.26] HSU FENG SEEKS THE SIMPLE LIFE

courtesy of takungpao.com

On Cable this week, Wong Man Ling traveled to Shanghai to interview film producer, public company CEO and good friend Hsu Feng and talked about how she started in film and the pain of making FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (BA WONG BIT GEI). Hsu Feng also regretted that she was unable to work with her mentor King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen) again; seeking a simple life, she honestly said that she had no interest in mansions. Her favorite job was still making movies.

An over night success with A TOUCH OF ZEN (HUP NUI), Hsu Feng considered herself getting into the business "by accident". Back then when Wu Kam Chuen made her A TOUCH OF ZEN's lead actress, she was more afraid than happy. Because Director Wu was serious about his production, she often was scolded. However she honestly said that working with him was a great honing. After retirement she opened a film company, investing in FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE she even won the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'or Prize that so many have dreamt of. Yet back then casting was quite a problem for her. "From the beginning I was certain about (Leslie) Cheung Kwok Wing, but he had many conditions that made me not waiting to spend the energy to serve others; John Lone told me that he really wanted to perform, but I still thought Cheung Kwok Wing's face was more tender and pretty. When I negotiated with John Lone, he was even harder to deal with. I was on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Later Cheung Kwok Wing said that he wanted to perform and dropped all of the previous conditions. I then immediately signed a contract with him." She also praised Cheung Kwok Wing's performance as great and was the most suitable to play Consort Yu. Yet because the Cannes jury was unfamiliar with him, he did not win the Best Actor award.

Hsu Feng's husband David Tong passed away in 2004, which had a heavy impact on her and even gave her depression. Wherever she went she had to bring medicine with her. However finally she was able to put away her sorrow and take over her husband's entire real estate business. She said, "I am a perfectionist, very intense with the business. I don't want to shame my husband." However she honestly said that mansions to me actually had no meaningful. The life that she was after was very simple, a bed and a television were enough. As for her son being linked to people in the industry, she did not mind at all that he was dating artists as long as he liked them.

[2011.03.23] CHENG PEI PEI PREPARES KING HU'S 80TH BIRTHDAY EXHIBIT

courtesy of takungpao.com

Star Cheng Pei Pei, director Ann Hui On Wa and others last Sunday attended a forum about late great director King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen). Sister Pei Pei revealed that she and members of the King Hu foundation will hold a King Hu 80th birthday memorial exhibit in Massachusetts. The Taipei Film Archive that stored King Hu's items is arranging for display items to be shipped to the U.S.

When Wu Kam Chuen passed, Sister Pei Pei took care of a lot of the director's items including scripts, drawings, costumes and Director Wu's large book collection. At the time Sister Pei Pei intended to hand them to Hong Kong Film Archive for storage, but Hong Kong Film Archive just opened then and could not accept such a large donation. She said that later Taipei Film Archive was willing to accept the items. Thus Wu Kam Chuen's valuable items were stored at the Taipei Film Archive.

This year would have been Wu Kam Chuen's 80th birthday. Sister Pei Pei and the foundation members planned to organize an exhibit in Massachusetts to remember this Hong Kong director who made great contributions to Chinese film. Sister Pei Pei said that Ang Lee's CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON had Wu Kam Chuen film's shadow. She also said that Director Ang Lee's wuxia film style was very close to Director Wu and was just as involved in action scenes. They would know like other directors who just minded the dramatic scenes and leave the action scenes to the action director.
