THE SKED: "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" Update

Reports are that NBC's midseason sitcom based on Chelsea Handler's bestselling book has unceremoniously dumped much of its supporting cast:  out are Natalie Morales and Angel Laketa Moore, the actresses who played Laura Prepon (Chelsea)'s best friends, as well as Joy Koy, who played one of her co-workers.  Reportedly this isn't just a matter of recasting, but a reconception of the characters.  The show needed retooling (my review is here), so this may only be the start of Chelsea's changes.

ShowBuzzDaily SUMMER MOVIE DRAFT: June 3 Update

As we head into the weekend, a margin of less than $10 million separates Team Metcalf and Salem in the ShowBuzzDaily Summer Movie Draft.  That's very good news for Salem because he has X-Men: First Class and Super 8 opening before Metcalf's next movie on June 17.  It's actually a very interesting race because as of the weekend of June 10, Salem will have opened four of his top five picks, while only one of Metcalf's top five will have opened.  Metcalf is banking on some big openings in late June and throughout July.  Look for the next update on Monday.

ShowBuzzDaily SUMMER MOVIE DRAFT: May 27 Update

Memorial Day weekend is finally here.  As Hangover Part II battles Kung Fu Panda 2 across North America and parts of the world, the real question is who will be ahead in the first annual ShowBuzzDaily Summer Movie Draft?  In the chart below, the standings to date have been updated through yesterday (including the first day gross for Hangover and Panda).  Actually, there won't be much suspense this weekend as Mr. Salem deftly selected Hangover while I (the other Mitch) was not paying attention.  At least that's the excuse I am sticking with for now.

The entire slate for each "team" is listed along with release dates so you can easily see which blockbusters or clunkers are coming down the line.

Check back on Tuesday for the next update (the normal Monday update is delayed because of the holiday).

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS MAY 27-29 -- SECOND UPDATE

The Hangover Part II Domestic Total estimate has been upgraded to slightly exceed the first Hangover.

The Hangover Part II's Domestic Total estimate has been upgraded to $285 million, slightly beating the $277 million of Part I.  There are two main reasons for this.  First, the original estimate generated by the ShowBuzzDaily model did not properly account for a Thursday number (originally estimated to be around $20 million).  Second, the actual Thursday number looks to be closer to $30 million.  Also, Kung Fu Panda 2 has been adjusted downward a few million dollars.  (Read Mitch Salem's reviews of The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2.)

                                              (millions)
New Films                        Critics   Opening  Domestic
May 27-29 THREE-DAY ONLY         Positive  Weekend   Total*
The Hangover Part II     WB  R      33%      $85      $285
Kung Fu Panda 2      Par/DW  PG     74%      $65      $220

There will be a lot of numbers flying around this weekend and into next week because "the weekend" can be defined as a three-, four- or five-day event.  The ShowBuzzDaily box office model focuses on three-day numbers (because all films share that element) and then layers in additional days such as an early-opening Thursday or a holiday Monday.  When you hear how Hangover or Panda opens this weekend always look for how many days they are talking about.  The guide below should help put these various weekend definitions in perspective.

                                  3-Day     4-Day     5-day
May 26-30 MULTI-DAY              Fri-Sun   Thu-Sun   Thu-Mon
The Hangover Part II     WB        $85      $115      $135
Kung Fu Panda 2      Par/DW        $65      $ 70      $ 90
