THE SKED: "Work It" Loses Job

It looks like the men who made ABC's WORK IT will have to don dresses to land their next gig:  after only 2 low-rated airings, the network has given in to the inevitable and pulled the awful show from its schedule.  However, those hoping that what was bad for Work It would be good for Cougar Town are in for a disappointment, since instead of scheduling the redheaded stepchild of its line-up in the vacant slot, ABC is merely going to air Last Man Standing reruns at Tuesday 8:30PM.

Work It was yanked after failing to score higher than a 1.5 in its second airing.  In a completely unrelated note, there's been no announcement yet from NBC concerning The Firm, which scored 1.0 in its second broadcast on Thursday night...

THE SKED'S TUESDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Potentially good news for Cougar Town fans.

ABC:  Cougar Town needs a timeslot, and Tuesday 8:30PM should be opening up any minute now, as 20% of the people who watched WORK IT the first time ran away screaming this week, and the show plunged to a 1.6 rating.  However, that real estate may not be as valuable as it should be, because lead-in LAST MAN STANDING hit a series low 2.2 last night.  All of this, mind you, is while FOX's Glee is still in reruns--when it returns with new episodes next week, the hour will only get more difficult.  CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP continued its low run, and BODY OF PROOF was up only 0.1 from last week's season low.

CBS:  An easy win in every hour, although UNFORGETTABLE tied a season low 2.2.  (As Mitch Metcalf notes, however, 10PM ratings last night are subject to adjustment due to coverage of the New Hampshire Republican primary.)

NBC:  BIGGEST LOSER was down a bit from last week, and PARENTHOOD was up only 0.1 from last week's season low.  However, those numbers were good enough for 2d place across the board, which in NBC terms is practically a win.

FOX:  Reruns, with a 1.3 for NEW GIRL looking best.

CW:  Where are they finding these movies?  Last night the network regaled America with 2 hours of TABLE FOR THREE, a film that seems to have been chosen because it starred One Tree Hill's Sophia Bush and Once Upon A Time's Jennifer Morrison (not to mention sometime Chuck villain Brandon Routh), and which previously had been seen only by their agents and close family.

Tonight's big event is NBC's premiere of its new 8-9PM comedy hour, with WHITNEY shifted from Thursday and the new ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA?.  At 9PM, CBS airs the PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS, which slumped badly last year from its 2010 number to a 2.7 rating.

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "Work It"

(RATINGS NOTE:  THE TIME-SLOT FOR ABC'S 2D EPISODE OF WORK IT BEGAN WITH A 3-MINUTE LAST MAN STANDING OVERRUN ON THE EAST COAST, WHICH MAY MAKE OVERNIGHT RATINGS LESS ACCURATE THAN USUAL.)

A lot can happen between the creation of a TV pilot in the spring and production of episodes for the regular season:  a writing/producing team is hired, audience focus groups weigh in, networks and studios (which may have had their own turnover in the off-season) give plenty of notes, both helpful and otherwise, and critics begin to rear their ugly heads.  The results can include changes to tone, pace, casting and even story.  Here at THE SKED, we're going to look past the pilots and present reviews of the first regular episodes of this year's new series as well.

Previously... on WORK IT:  Lee (Benjamin Koldyke) and Angel (Amaury Nolasco) are buddies and former Pontiac employees who lost their jobs in the recession and find themselves unable to find any others which allow possession of a penis.  Thus the very straight men are compelled to take work as phamaceutical saleswomen in an all-female office (Rebecca Mader, Rochelle Aytes, Kate Reinders, Kirstin Eggers), dressing in drag and hiding their jobs from their co-workers, Lee's wife and daughter (Beth Lacke and Hannah Sullivan) and their pal Brian (John Caparulo).

Episode 2:  The second episode, written by series creators Ted Cohen and Andrew Reich,  finds Lee and Angel done with their training and ready to start selling phamaceuticals.  Lee discovers that Angel has an edge on him in sales because he's a more attractive and flirtatious "woman" with the doctor customers, thus teaching Lee that males who sell products do so on the basis of their confidence and knowledge, while successful ladies do so with their T & A.  After flopping as a flirt himself, Lee is ultimately able to sell his products by confessing his extreme ugliness to the customer and promising that because he's so ugly, he'll have no choice but to provide particularly fine customer service.  Along the way, he rescues Angel from his "date" with a doctor who got a little too interested in the "saleswoman."

Here's what didn't happen after the ABC brass watched the pilot for Work It and heard the responses of others who did:  no one said "Oh my god, this is the the turd of the decade, hateful to every conceivable gender!  If we're going to put this on the air, we must change it completely and make it something utterly different from what it started to be!"  On the contrary, clearly ABC beheld what they had done and were pleased with it, because Work It is no less repugnant and incompetent now than it was when its pilot was produced.

It's important to note those twin layers of failure.  Yes, of course Work It is hateful to both men and women (but let's be real, mostly to women, who are portrayed as bitchy schemers, airheads, sexpots, or some combination thereof, with the exception of "The Wife"), transvestites and transgenders, English people and Hispanics, doctors and pharmaceutical salespeople, former Pontiac employees and their wives and children alike.  Hatefulness alone, though, in and of itself, isn't necessarily unentertaining--it's possible to gasp at some of the jokes on The League or Family Guy and still find them irresistibly funny.  What makes Work It so special is that it mixes that hatefulness with awful timing, creakingly old-fashioned stories, and witless, thudding punch-lines.  Work It is about as funny as a session of electro-convulsive therapy accompanied by a screeching laugh track.

The performances and direction are all dismal, but one can't blame the actors (the guest cast includes the extremely experienced and funny Stephen Tobolowsky) or the technicians.  Reich & Cohen created and are writing this thing, ABC is putting it on the air, and on their heads it shall be.

Original Verdict:  Change the Channel

Pilot + 1:  CHANGE.  THE.  CHANNEL.

THE SKED'S TUESDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Justice was swift for the worst new show of the season.

ABC:  WORK IT debuted with a lousy 2.0 on its quick journey to the TV boneyard.  In fairness, LAST MAN STANDING's 2.4 gave it a much weaker lead-in than the 3.0 the show was able to provide for MAN UP's 2.4 debut in the fall.  But look where Man Up is now--and Work It, facing reruns on 2 networks, will almost inevitably go down from its premiere, which should seal its fate. At 9PM, CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP rose modestly from Work It to a 2.2, holding the hour until the return of Dancing With the Stars.  BODY OF PROOF returned disastrously to new episodes with a 1.5.

NBC:  BIGGEST LOSER's weak 2.3 premiere was a full ratings point below last year's winter premiere, but on par with this season's fall start--it's simply a show in steep decline, and dates and competition don't matter much. PARENTHOOD didn't do its bubble status any favors with a series low 1.7 rating, and creatively, it was an unusually gimmicky (road trip!) and pat episode for a show that's typically better than that.

CBS:  Meanwhile, on the winning side... CBS simply aired new episodes of its regular shows and obliterated the competition for the night, with NCIS beating its closest competitor at 8PM by a factor of 75%, and NCIS LA and UNFORGETTABLE each winning their hours by 45% margins.

FOX:  Still in repeat mode, with a 1.3 for NEW GIRL the night's high-point.

CW:  More repeats of SECRET CIRCLE, more 0.3-0.4 numbers.

Tonight ABC is the only network with all-new episodes.  CBS starts the night with an I GET THAT A LOT special, then reruns; FOX has a new episode of MOBBED at 9PM as it waits for American Idol to arrive; NBC is all-rerun; and CW continues the marathon of Secret Circle episodes that no one seems to want.

THE SKED PILOT REPORT: ABC's "Work It"

Disclaimer:  Network pilots now in circulation are not necessarily in the form that will air in the Fall.  Pilots are often reedited and rescored, and in some cases even recast or reshot.  So these critiques shouldn't be taken as full TV pilot reviews, but rather as a guide to the general style and content of the new shows coming your way.

WORK IT -  Midseason on ABC:  Change the Channel

WORK IT is getting on the air.  I say this because if you're ever unfortunate enough to watch this thing, you may want to repeat that statement over and over as you stare, in sheer wonderment, at how low network standards can sink.  Every season has a series that's jaw-droppingly "What were they thinking?" awful, and folks, this year Work It is that show.

Exaggeration, you say.  Overstatement, you presume.  Well, the opening scene of this theoretical comedy has a joke in which a man's prostate exam is compared to Jodie Foster's gang rape in The Accused.  And hey, as far as I'm concerned, no subject is off-limits for comedy--if I heard that Louie CK's act had some edgy bit on gang rape, I'd at least give it some consideration.  But in the context of a multi-camera network TV sitcom, how did anyone think this was going to be funny?  For more hilarity, how about a guy who's lost his job and is supposed to go shopping, quipping without euphenmism that he'll put the nectarines where his balls used to be?  Again:  on Rescue Me, that might fit with Denis Leary's brand of bitter dark humor.  But for the guffaws of a live studio audience?

Work It is based around the familiar trope of guys who have to masquerade as women for some pressing reason:  in Some Like It Hot, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were hiding from gangsters; in Big Momma's House and its sequels, Martin Lawrence was an undercover cop; in Bosom Buddies, Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari were after cheap rent.  Work It takes its cue mostly from Tootsie, where Dustin Hoffman could only get work when he became an actress.  Similarly, here Ben Koldyke and Amaury Nolasco are former Pontiac salesmen who are unable to find any sales jobs--except at a drug company, which only hires women (because, we're told, when the company employed men, "the doctors didn't want to nail them.").

Let's put aside the legal risks of that policy, not to mention the idea that any doctor would want to nail the frightening "women" our heroes become--that stuff goes with the genre.  But while the great cross-dressing comedies are actually terrific romances, stories with great affection for their biologically female characters (Marilyn Monroe, Jessica Lange, Donna Dixon), Work It comes close to flat-out misogyny.  As the jokes above suggest, the comedy here comes from a place of fear and distaste toward women.  It's a puzzlement how writers like Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen, whose careers include senior writing positions on Friends, could be responsible for gags like Koldyke, in his job interview, referring to his supposed body parts as his "teats," or discovering that while men eat hero sandwiches for lunch, women eat only salads; women also, it turns out, belong to book clubs, can have any grudge assuaged with an expensive handbag, and don't know the first thing about cars.

It's not the actors' fault--they go about their cartoonish paces professionally enough (although it's sad to see Rebecca Mader from Lost stuck as the mean girl at the drug company).  That goes for Beth McCarthy Miller's direction as well.  The material is the culprit here; they're collateral damage.

ABC hasn't announced where they'll place Work It on their midseason schedule (presumably it'll substitute for one of their regular sitcoms to avoid reruns, the way Mr Sunshine was slotted into Cougar Town's spot last year).  Wherever it is, though, you may want to check if your brand of DVR has an "Avoid At All Costs" setting.

THE SKED: "Man Up!" Goes Down

ABC has decided that MAN UP! isn't even worthy of sullying its Tuesday 8:30PM timeslot during the low-rated holiday season.  Effective immediately, it's off the schedule, replaced for now by repeats of LAST MAN STANDING.

No one will miss Man Up!, but happiness at its demise is lessened by the fact that on January 3, ABC will start filling that slot--one hopes briefly--with something even worse:  the absolute nadir of the broadcast network pilots picked up to series, WORK IT.  So Happy Holidays, everyone, and enjoy those Tim Allen reruns while they last.

THE SKED: ABC MIDSEASON - UPDATE: "Pan Am" Crashes; "Cougar Town" Diminishes

UPDATE:  The other shoe is falling on COUGAR TOWN, and it's not a good fit:  ABC has cut the show's order from 22 episodes to 15, and will announce its timeslot at the TCA in January.  Deadline says it may be put into the Tuesday 8:30PM slot behind LAST MAN STANDING, which would be a mismatch of historic proportions.  Rebel Network (see below)--your time may be coming!

ABC has announced a slate of midseason premieres, and what's missing may be more notable than what's there.  There was no mention of the returning COUGAR TOWN on the schedule, nor the new (and based on its pilot, exceptionally promising) sitcom APT 23, not to mention Shonda Rhimes' Washington drama SCANDAL.  Vulture says that according to their inside source, Cougar Town will in fact be on the air on February or March, so for now at least we can hit "Pause" on our plan for a new rebel network that starts out with Community, Cougar Town and the return of Arrested Development.

As for what the network did announce:

SUNDAY:  As had been anticipated since the Upfronts, ABC will give GCB (which is really GOOD CHRISTIAN BITCHES but the Parents Television Council won't let the network say so) the post-DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES slot on Sundays 10PM starting March 4, and then hope it can be the successor to that show's fading audience.  The last show to get a shot at that throne, PAN AM, was given only one extra episode, bespeaking scheduling needs rather than any real encouragement.  Although the show isn't officially dead, ABC's development season would have to be awfully bad for it to come back.

MONDAY:  No changes, but the next cycle of DANCING WITH THE STARS will debut March 19, giving The Voice plenty of time to settle into its Monday slot on NBC, since it starts the night after the Super Bowl.

TUESDAY:  Say goodbye to the awful MAN UP!--and now say hello to the even more dreadful (based on the pilot) WORK IT, a cross dressing comedy that may even now be making Billy Wilder's gravestone weep.  It's inheriting the post-LAST MAN STANDING slot to cement ABC's Tuesday 8-9PM as the worst comedy hour on television.  At 9PM, CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP will have a 5 week run starting in January, then the effectively creepy THE RIVER will take over for 7 weeks until the DANCING WITH THE STARS results show returns to the hour.  BODY OF PROOF only received an extra order of 3 episodes, so the 10PM slot will open up early in 2012, meaning that may be where Scandal (or whatever currently inhabits Scandal's slot) will go.

WEDNESDAY:  You don't mess with what's working:  no changes.

THURSDAY:  In the troublesome 8PM slot, WINTER WIPEOUT will run Jan-March, and then THE MISSING, which looks to be Ashley Judd as Liam Neeson in Taken, takes over.

FRIDAY:  SHARK TANK replaces the 8PM hour of EXTREME MAKEOVER in February.

SATURDAY:  If Cougar Town and Apt 23 go here, I'm starting a boycott.  (They won't.)
