The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced the nominees for the 14th Annual Critic's Choice Awards.
Notable nominations include 2 best film nominations for Wall-E which picked up nods for not only Best Picture but also best Animated Feature. Fans will be happy that both The Dark Knight and The Wrestler have recieved multiple nominations but the top honours for noms goes to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk who tie in the lead with 8 nominations. Next in line for total nominations is The Dark Knight, Doubt and Slumdog Millionaire all picked up 6 nominations.
There is strong competition in the Best Director category which includes Danny Boyle, David Fincher, Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon, Christopher Nolan and Gus Van Sant. Another category of interested is Best Supporting Actor which has two Milk nods for Josh Brolin and James Franco, surprize nominations for Robert Downey, Jr in Tropic Thunder, however the likely candidate is Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight. Nothing But the Truth picked up two nominations for Best Actress with Kate Beckinsale and Best Supporting Actress with Vera Farmiga but this film hasn't been released here, the only time I've crossed paths with it was it going offsale during TIFF'08.
The awards run a little differently that other awards, having multiple 'best film' awards such as: Best Picture has 10 picture nominations, then add 5 more each for Best Action, Comedy and Animated. They also have a Young Actor/Actress (under 21) and Best Picture Made for Television category.
The ceremony will air January 8, 2009 at 9PM EST on VH1.
Update Jan 9/09: see winners list here.
