In January 2009 the list will be narrowed down to seven.

On January 15, 2009 "all members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration" (source)

The 81st Academy Awards nominations will be announced Jan 22/09 at 5:30am PST/8:30am EST. The awards will be televised February 22/09 on ABC.
