The Toronto After Dark Film Festival opened last night to an enthusiastic crowd of film fans and all set to tuck into a week of genre films from horror to scifi to zombies to the evenings creature feature: The Last Lovecraft! With 6 cast & crew members of the film in attendance it made for a very warm welcome for the festival back to the Bloor Cinema.

A horror comedy inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, The Last Lovecraft pulls together many elements of a great adventure film - a reluctant hero, a knowledgeable sidekick and of course a quest! I was a little worried going into the film with my lack of knowledge on HP Lovecraft, but the film played very well to a newb like me by centring the lore and it's relevance to the plot and quest of our ... not fearless, but spirited although reluctant hero Jeff (Kyle Davis) and his knowledgeable long-time friend Charlie (Devin McGinn). The two have great chemistry giving a fantastic sense of camaraderie which brings a buddy comedy quality to the film that plays extremely well into adventurous spirit of our inadvertent quest goers. The story is rich in lore which I'm sure a more trained eye could pick out, but I had a lot watching this film with it's infectious humour, deserted sea captains, sea creatures and a fair amount of blood and guts to boot.
