The Sked: WEDNESDAY RATINGS November 2 & Sweep Update

One full week into the November sweep, we are starting to get a clear picture of the relative position of each network.  FOX is holding on above a 4 rating in first place, up significant double digits over last year.  CBS is in second at a 2.8, up 11% over last November's first seven days, while ABC and NBC will be fighting for third, near last year's levels.  The three remaining Sunday Night Football games will be the key to NBC's success or failure at covering up the very weak Monday-Saturday schedule.  The numbers to beat for the comparable football games in 2010 are 7.4, 8.1 and 8.8, a pretty tall order.

           NOVEMBER SWEEP SCORECARD
          2011 vs 2010 Through Day 7 of 28

                 2011    2010
          FOX     4.2     3.3     +27%
          CBS     2.8     2.5     +11%
          ABC     2.4     2.5     - 5%
          NBC     2.5     2.4     + 2%

Last night, FOX won Wednesday with a 3.9 rating for The X Factor, up dramatically from last year's 1.3 on the same night featuring a Hell's Kitchen combo.  ABC was second last night with a 3.5 (up from a 2.8 last year), and CBS was a competitive third with a 3.3 rating (same as the comparable night last year).  NBC was a weak fourth place with a 1.5 rating (down from a 1.8 last year).

The X Factor won the night despite tying a season low for this edition.  (Note that the prior two weeks aired on Tuesday rather than Wednesday because of postseason baseball conflicts.)  The rating for last night's episode will probably go up to a 4.0 in the official nationals this afternoon, but there is no guarantee.

FOX Wed Track    9.21  9.28  10.5  10.12 10.18 10.25 11.2
X Factor         4.4   4.1   4.1   ---   3.9   4.4   3.9*
                                         Tue   Tue

CBS had kind of mixed results from its three programs.  Survivor tied a season high last night, while Criminal Minds tied a season low for an original episode.  CSI last night was one tenth of a rating point above its season low, finishing in second place to a surging Revenge on ABC in the 10 pm hour.

CBS Wed Track    9.21  9.28  10.5  10.12 10.19 10.26 11.2
Survivor         3.2   3.2   3.1   3.2   3.3   3.5   3.5*
Criminal Minds   4.1   3.6   3.8   3.8   3.9   2.8R  3.6*
CSI              3.2   3.1   2.9   2.6   2.6   2.0R  2.7*

ABC's comedy block from 8:00-9:30 turned in fairly average results for this season, although Happy Endings at 9:30 is on a bit of a roll, tying a season best it set last week.  And Revenge hit a 3.0 rating (not easy to do at 10 pm these days), its best performance since the premiere.  It is highly unusual for a serialized drama to gain audience several weeks into its run (mainly because of viewer confusion about back story), but ABC is getting it done.

ABC Wed Track    9.21  9.28  10.5  10.12 10.19 10.26 11.2
The Middle       3.1   2.7   2.8   2.9   3.0   3.2   2.9*

Revenge          3.4   2.7   2.4   2.7   2.5   2.7   3.0*

NBC is not getting it done on Wednesdays.  Up All Night sunk below a 2 rating with an original episode, Harry's Law fell under its formerly reliable 1.2 floor, and SVU is barely hanging on to a 2 rating (finishing a distant third in the 10 pm time period).

NBC Wed Track    9.21  9.28  10.5  10.12 10.19 10.26 11.2
