Sandra Ng Kwan Yu with ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW (SHUI YUET SUN TAU) two nights ago won the Excellent Overseas Chinese Actress award at the Beijing Huabiao Awards.  Yesterday she returned to Hong Kong.  Without any make up Kwan Yu stepped out of the airport and reporters rushed to interview her.  She instead asked reporters who they were waiting for?  Kwan Yu honestly said that she was very emotional at the moment of victory.  Although her boyfriend Peter Chan Ho Sun was not nominated, he
watched it on television with their daughter.  She said, "I was the happiest about my daughter toughing it out (bed time) until my appearance.  The daughter asked me why the one before me (Chow Yun Fat) talked so long and that she didn't know what I was saying because I was speaking Putonghua."

Two nights ago Kwan Yu celebrated with Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting, Alex Law Kai Yui and Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) but they will not celebrate again because Chan Ho Sun's mother just passed away and he was not in the greatest of mood.  As for defeating the favorite Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), she asked, "Really?  I didn't notice.  I just returned from Thailand to Hong Kong for a day before going to Beijing."  As for still taking time to attend despite her family issue, was she notified in advance about her victory?  She said that the event was fully confidential.  "Originally I didn't plan on going because I wasn't ready, but I of course asked the event whether I had any chance."

[2011.07.31] DEREK YEE JOKES THAT ZHOU XUN IS A WILLING VICTIM

Andrew Lau, Derek Yee, Manfred Wong hope to cultivate the next generation of directors

Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild sold its old location in Ho Man Tin for a good price then purchase a new and larger location in Kwung Tong. Yesterday it held a relocation worship ceremony. Attendees included current Film Directors' Guild president Derek Yee Tung Sing,
vice presidents Andrew Lau Wai Keung, Manfred Wong (Man Jun), Alex Law Kai Yui and secretary general Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting.

Siu Bo revealed that the old location sold for a good price and even had money left over, which hopefully would be able to maintain the organization's financial condition. Since the organization's establishment in 1989, its membership has already grown to over 250 people. However most have already retired and only 30 to 40 people are still truly making movies. As for the new location, Man Jun said that companies of Andy Lau Tak Wa, Peter Chan Ho Sun, Lau Wai Keung and others were in the same district. The feeling was that it was like the film industry's Hollywood. Now some of the Film Directors' Guild new location will be provided for the offices of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers. Siu Bo also said that although there was competition between directors, he still hoped that friendship came first as they protect director interests together and hopefully cultivate the next generation of director successors.

As for the recently piping hot Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi marriage troubles, Siu Bo said that with love and children involved the matter was very hard to comment on. He thought that Ting Fung and Pak Chi were still young. Siu Bo also worried that outside reports would affect how they would handle problems and hoped that they would handle them in peace. When Pak Chi made her comeback she turned down Siu Bo's new film and caused some unpleasantness. Would Siu Bo ask Pak Chi to perform again in the future? Siu Bo said, "There wasn't any unpleasantness at all, this is minor. Film productions is also about fate, everyone has the right to choose." Siu Bo's new film THE GREAT MAGICIAN (DAI MOR SHOOK SI) is in its post production stage and planned for a Lunar New Year release. Lead actress Zhou Xun joked that Siu Bo swindled her because she thought she would be in a romance with two Best Actors Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Lau Ching Wan, so she agreed to perform without reading the script. She did not expect to fight from the beginning to the end of the movies. Siu Bo said that Zhou Xun had a lot of fun on the set because she was able to work with her favorites Wai Jai and Ching Wan. In addition they in the film would fight over her. Siu Bo also praised Zhou Xun as very special, getting along great with Wai Jai and Ching Wan. In addition she absolutely had no star arrogance.

Cheung Yuen Ting revealed that she was planning a new film that would take place in the 40s and the 50s. The family of a little guy escaped from Anhui to Hong Kong and struggled to survive. The around 30 year old lead would have two sons and thus needed to have a mature and masculine weathered flavor. She would like Ting Fung to play the role. Ting Fung has already read the script but they needed to work out the details.

Would Ting Fung's marriage troubles help with his performance? Cheung Yuen Ting said, "Life experience would more or less benefit the performance, I of course don't want anything to happen to his family. (Ting Fung is already in the Best Actor class, has his salary climbed?) I am not responsible for dealing with that."

Nicholas Tse Ting Fung has been busy with work after returning to Hong Kong. Earlier after a watch ad yesterday afternoon he returned to his post production company in Causeway Bay to meet with directors Alex Law Kai Yui and Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting about a script. Ting Fung and his assistant greeted reporters. When asked about a magazine reporting that Lucas wanted to go with his father when they met, he only coldly said, "How would I know about magazine reports?" Then he returned to the company. After the meeting the directors left first. Law Kai Yui said that Ting Fung was very smart and professional. His mood was not affected. He also admitted that this time he discussed working together on a new film. If all goes well the production will take a few months and begin work in the winter.

After ten minutes, Ting Fung left the company with assistant Cousin, Roger and a worker. Cousin even dragged an orange suitcase. Did he talk about working together with the directors? Ting Fung only said, "How do I answer that question? (Where are you going later?) You will follow anyway." A reporter almost tripped and Ting Fung lent a hand as he kept telling reporters to be careful. After getting in the vehicle he also made an OK gesture with a fully chok look. The vehicle headed toward Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi's residence. After around two hours he left to return to the apartment. Reporters asked whether he met and played with his sons. He impatiently said, "Should I be playing with you?" Then he asked everyone not to wait as he would not leave again.

In addition, the Wong Jing directed new film TREASURE HUNT (MO GA JI BO) will open nationwide on August 19. This film starred Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi and her son Lucas Tse, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Liu Hua, Lin Miaokei. The film released the film's first poster with the slogan "Cheung Pak Chi Turns the Summer Slot Upside Down with Her Son". This was Cheung Pak Chi's first film release after the marriage troubles. The film also had her son Lucas' support, conceivably it would be very attractive.

On the poster, Pak Chi and her son Lucas were placed on the most eye catching spot. Cheng Chung Kei impersonated Bruce Lee. As for the cruel August film market competition, the film company were full of confidence because this was a family film. As for whether Pak Chi and Ting Fung's marriage troubles would affect the film promotion, the film company said that this indeed was a surprise but it had an agreement with Pak Chi, who would attend the film's premiere.

courtesy of takungpao.com

The 14th Shanghai International Film Festival "Asian New Talent" award was unveiled. Two Japanese films were the big winners as KAASAN MOM'S LIFE and BIRTH RIGHT won Best Feature Film and Jury Prix. Taiwan director Teng Yung Shing with RETURN TICKET won Best Director. Jury chair Shunji Iwai said, choosing three films from nine excellent work was very difficult. He was full of expectations for new directors and said, "Everyone need to believe in themselves, maintain their own styles and make their own movies."

Director Naoki Hashimoto with BIRTH RIGHT received the evening's first award Jury Prix from jury members Kwai Lun-Mei and Derek Elley. Xia Yu and Alex Law Kai Yui presented the Best Feature Film award to KAASAN'S MOM LIFE. As for the final award, when Teng Yung Shing accepted the Best Director award from the jury chair Shunji Iwai, he was so excited that he could not speak.

Farm worker film RETURN TICKET is a semi-documentary about the farmer work "spring migration" problem. Qin Hailu stars and famous director Hou Hsiao-Hsien produces. Teng Yung Shing said, "I feel like a kid doing his homeworking, after doing it for so long finally I pass. Although this is my second film, in terms of age it's already very late. I am very happy to still be able to win the New Talent Award at such an age, I consider it answering to myself." Teng Yung Shing said that he was teary eyed because he thought of his mother. "Because I mentioned this film to my mother before she passed away. The film is a story of going back as well as the journey of my heart. I have been very rebellious since I was little, when I think of going home I realize that being close (to family and relatives) is so hard."

Japanese film KAASAN'S MOM LIFE is about a comic book creator and housewife Reiko's daily experience. In a comedic way it examines a series of family problems in the modern society. The film's director Syoutarou Kobayasi said, "This movie is dedicated to my mother." Kwai Lun-Mei said about this year's Asian New Talent award Jury Prix winner BIRTH RIGHT, "The film displays the director's serious yet uncompromising style in an all new narrative as a genre. The jury has reasons to believe, the director's future film career will definitely be very exciting."

This year's Star Hunter new talent event also unveiled its winner. Jury Italian film star Maria Cucinotta and famous Hong Kong director Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting will select a winner to participate in their new films.

Shanghai International Film Festival reportedly is China's only class A international film festival. Since its inception its goal is to help new talent. In 2004, the film festival created the Asian New Talent award and according to the rules Best Director and Best Feature Film winners would receive 150,000 yuan RMB cash prize.
