Milking the Rhino

Writer/Director: David E. Simpson
Documentary
USA

Reason to see: Documentary showing a unique perspective on the affects of wildlife, people and conservation

When I first heard about Milking the Rhino, a documentary that shows the effects of wildlife from the perspective of the people that live literally alongside the animals, I was instantly intrigued. What would that be like? What effect would it have? Talk about having the possibility to be dangerous! The film covers all these questions and more.

The documentary follows the Maasai tribe in Kenya and Nambia's Himba on parallel journeys of living alongside wildlife. At times this can be dangerous, which results in differing yet strong opinions on how to deal with the danger. Should the dangerous animals be killed, or is there another alternative?

It is refreshing to see a documentary that showcased the positive in a troubling situation, and highlights the use unconventional thinking to turn a problem into something that can benefit the community. The idea of turning the tables by highlighting the wildlife through conservation is brilliant. It also benefits the tourism and discusses the tourism industry with transparency showing that the conservations present wildlife to the tourists which reinforces the images and expectations of their experience while visiting Africa. The real focus is on the communities, and how the changes benefit them, the land and the wildlife. Powerful and enlightening, Milking the Rhino is a fascinating journey to take.

Milking the Rhino is screening as a part of Doc Soup this Wednesday February 11, 2009 at 6:30 and 9:15PM at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 6, 2009!

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday February 6, 2009! It sure feels like a regular Friday when we have 8 new releases to pour over. Two are Canadian (yay!) and two have Dakota Fanning. No overlap on the two, or the four depending on how you look at it.

In limited release this week we have both of the Canadian films of the week, first up is Nurse.Fighter.Boy which looks fantastic and touching. Next up is Know Your Mushrooms, this fungi documentary expands from last weeks special screening to a theatrical run. Go Shrooms go! The highly acclaimed Wendy and Lucy gets its Toronto release and has make many top ten lists from 2008, including top honours from the Toronto Film Critics. The last of our limited releases is Cassandra's Dream. I thought Taken was a long time coming here but Cassandra's Dream takes the cake. It was in TO back at TIFF'07 and looked like it wouldn't get a theatrical releases but here we are with another Woody Allen film. The trailer reminds me of In Bruges, but played straight.

In wide release this week we have the wild and creepy animated world in Coraline, adapted from the Neil Gaiman book and from the director of A Nightmare Before Christmas. Now that is my kinda kids film! It's playing in 3D or 2D depending on theatre, so make sure to check your local listings if you have a preference. We have the first of many superhero themed films of 2009 this week with Push starring Chris Evans (Sunshine) and Dakota Fanning. I know I'll be seeing it. Rounding out the wide releases are the romantic comedy He's Just Not That Into You and regular comedy The Pink Panther 2.

Have a great weekend!

Shannon
