The ballots are tallied and the juries have spoken for the 2008 TIFF award winners:

Best Canadian First Feature Film goes to Before Tomorrow (Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Piujuq Ivalu)
Special citation to Borderline (Lyne Charlebois)

Best Canadian Feature Film goes to Lost Song (Rodrigue Jean)
Special citation to Adoration (Atom Egoyan)

Best Canadian Short goes to Block B (Chris Chong Chan Fui)
Special citation to Next Floor (Denis Villeneuve)

Discovery Award goes to Hunger (Steve McQueen)

The People Choice Award goes to Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionnaire.

The Prize of the International Critics (FIPRESCI Prize) for Discovery goes to Lymelife (Derick Martini)

The Prize of the International Critics (FIPRESCI Prize) for Special Presentations Disgrace (Steve Jacobs)

The People's Choice Award going to Slumdog Millionaire was not a huge surprize as everyone who saw it spoke very highly about it. There was a free screening of the film on the closing night of TIFF at the Elgin theatre - that must have been an exciting place to be! Other than that the remaining winners are surprizes, especially Canadian feature which I thought Pontypool would be a shoe-in!

Films that I heard a lot of positive buzz on were JCVD, Still Walking, Pontypool and C'est pas moi, je le jure!

Did you have a favourite film this year? If so, what was it?

The Toronto International Film Festival 2008 ran from September 4-13/08 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
