DVD Releases for May 18, 2010

Really bizarre combination of films being on DVD this week, although there is many I'd recommend it's still odd to have biopics alongside Japanese gore-based horror - even if both are enjoyable viewing experiences. So, let's have at it - DVD releases for May 18, 2010:

First up is a 2009 release that made my list of 2009 movie memories for several reasons, but primarily fr reminding me just how much I love rugby: Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the South Africa team captain and the film follows the events leading up to the 1995 World Cup. It's a solid sport drama, but a must see for any rugby fan. Next up is Eden à l'Ouest, a compelling tale and immigrant journey film from director Costa-Gavras. On a completely different tone there is the Japanese gorefest that is Tokyo Gore Police 1.5, and the .5 includes follow-up short films. I can't even begin to imagine what more they could do with that one.

Several films come out this week that are on my list of films I want to see including the comedy Gravytrain brought to us by the team of the hilarious Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way of the Tosser. I'm also want to see The Messenger, purely for Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma (2007), 30 Days of Night) who is on my perpetual 'keeping an eye on' list. I'm also curious about the documentary P-Star Rising which was highly acclaimed at last years Hot Docs and North Face, a based on a true rock climbing competition story. This week we also have Criterion release of the 1971 film Walkabout from director Nicolas Roeg (Performance, The Man Who Fell to Earth).

We have a few monster release this week of the arrrrrrrgh! variety including new-ish Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus along with DVD release of 1965 Japanese film Gamera: The Giant Monster. TV on DVD this week includes Rocket Robin Hood 2, which is one of those shows that is firmly planted in nostalgia land for me and I can't hear that title without wanting to start singing the theme song.

Several 2010 theatrical releases are hitting the shelves including the 'everyone is in it' Valentine's Day, comedy The Spy Next Door and Brendan Fraser & Harrison Ford starring Extraordinary Measures.
