Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday June 11, 2010! World Cup starts today, but given the huge time change it shouldn't interfere with your movie watching schedule for the week! And we've got a great set of releases so make sure you get out there to the theatre.
In limited release this week we have an amazing selection of films to choose from. I'm very excited to see Black Field playing here in Toronto, it is the winner of the Best Canadian Feature at the Female Eye Film Festival and is a dark historical drama starring Sara Canning ("TheVampire Diaries"), Mathieu Bourguet & Ferron Guerreiro and from writer/director Danishka Esterhazy. More historical goodness with Alejandro Amenábar's gorgeous looking Agora, a historical drama set in Egypt. 391 A.D. Alexandria starring Rachel Weisz. If documentaries are your style, your in luck with 2 to choose from this week including The "Socalled" Movie featuring artist Socalled, whom has an amazing ability to make what you'd think never go together, work together brilliantly, including combining hip hop and klezmer music. Keeping it artsy, you can check out It Came From Kuchar, a documentary of the underground twin filmmaking brothers George and Mike Kuchar. Last up is Machotaildrop, a film that's been on my radar a while but I can't really 'get' what it's about but I keep picking up 'skateboarding' and it's billed as 'fantasy'. Sounds interesting enough to me!
Make sure to check the listings for Black Field, It Came From Kuchar (here) and Machotaildrop (here) as they have runs that are just short of a week run, but you don't want to miss them! Also, the Friday June 11, 2010 9:15pm screening of Black Field will have a Q&A with star Sara Canning ("TheVampire Diaries")and writer/director Danishka Esterhazy.
In wide release this week we only have two films in release, but they are both biggies. First up, and one I can't wait to see is The A-Team, taking the premise of the 80s TV show and blasting, plastering and blowing it up on the big screen. Also 80s redux this week is The Karate Kid (2010), previously (and sounding like it was more aptly) titled The Kung Fu Kid. Wax on, wax off! I'll admit it. I want to see it too. In fact, this week I want to see everything!
Have a great weekend!
Shannon
