Joey Yung Cho Yi finally broke Ah Mui's record with her sixth Most Popular Female Singer award.
TVB's own Raymond Lam Fung was expected to win Asia Pacific Male Singer
Music's last report card -- TVB JADE SOLID GOLD AWARDS took place last night despite the shattered music scene. Joey Yung Cho Yi won four awards and even broke Anita Mui Yim Fong's records with her 6th Most Popular Female Singer award. Miriam Yeung Chin Wa won her first Asia Pacific Most Popular Female Singer. Raymond Lam Fung won the Asia Pacific
Most Popular Male Singer award again. Although Leo Ku Kui Ke won Most Popular Male Singer again, but his hit NO REGRETS (YI HOI HO CHING) did not win Jade Solid Gold Gold Song. It went to Janice Vidal (Wai Lan) and JW's duet WHAT MEN BELIEVE, which stunned the crowd.
Last night was Jade Solid Gold's 30th anniversary and created a new record as well, as Yung Cho Yi finally broke Mui Yim Fong's five time Most Popular Female Singer record with her sixth. Her song DISFIGURED (POR SEUNG) not only won Gold Song but also Most Popular Chinese Song Gold Prize and Most Popular Commercial Song Gold Prize.
Yeung Chin Wa received many firsts last night, including her first Asia Pacific Most Popular Female Singer, Most Popular Duet Gold Prize with FIRST ENCOUNTER (CHOR GEIN) with Lam Fung. Chin Wa even joked that she truly has been promoted to "Mrs." (sounds like Asia Pacific).
Ku Kui Ke won his third Most Popular Male Singer. Originally he was the favorite to win Solid Gold Gold Song with NO REGRETS, but in the end TVB gave the prize to JW and Wai Lan's duet WHAT MEN BELIEVE for an even distribution with East Asia Records that has in the past year supported TVB music programs and for Leon Lai Ming's guest appearance.
As singers prepared to congratulate Gei Jai, they were stunned to hear the result and did not know how to react. Even Wai Lan herself was stunned; although Gei Jai still applauded he already showed a flash of disappointment. TVB's own Lam Fung again won Asia Pacific Most Popular Male Singer and won three awards. Every time he accepted an award he thanked Elaine Lok Yi Ling but forgot to thank Ms. Mona Fong Yat Wa who wrote him a letter in support.
TVB and the four major record labels' royalty issue remained unresolved. Thus last night's award show seemed to be missing some singers. In addition the last minute replacement hosts the Gods were unable to humorously control the scene like Eric Tsang Chi Wai, so the event inevitably was somewhat cold. With Jade Solid Gold's 30th anniversary, TVB asked a group of 80s singers to perform classic hits. They included one of the Four Great Heavenly Kings Lai Ming, Shirley Kwan Suk Yi, Lui Fong and Anthony Lun Wing Leung. Even Vivian Chow Wai Man appeared to present an award. Lun Wing Leung played the piano and performed HEART REMAINS COLD with Mui Yim Fong as Ah Mui's award winning scenes were shown. The event pointed out that when HEART REMAINS COLD won, Mui Yim Fong already announced that she would not accept any more awards. Thus this duet award remained at TVB for years. This year it decided to invite Lun Wing Leung to accept it on her behalf. Lun Wing Leung said, "Thank you Mui Yim Fong! Today I accept this award on her behalf. One day we will be able to share this award."
As soon as the show began, hosts the Gods Wong Cho Nam, Johnson Lee Si Jit and Yuen Siu Cheung took attendance with the singers. When they called Choi Cheuk Yin, they imitated Chan Wai Ting and screamed "I love you" and asked her to focus on her studies and not just on dating. Ah Sa and Chan Wai Ting awkwardly smiled.
When they reached G.E.M., the trio joked that she just returned from a Taiwan academic exchange program. Wong Cho Nam also took a jab at the four major record label singers' continuing absence. "We still have a dozen or two classmates who are on indefinite sick days, let's wish them an early recovery!"
When Chow Wai Man and Ku Kui Ke presented the New Artist Awards, a video of them more than a decade ago was shown. Chow Wai Man saw Ge Jai's look when he started, she joked, "The most important for a new comer is substance, looks aren't important." Then the screen showed Chow Wai Man's shocking Victorian gown look. Gei Jai struck back. "Why did you always sign your autograph across your chest?" Chow Wai Man said, "There is more room there, should I have signed over my face and cover up my look?" Gei Jai joked, "There really is so much space that you can write an article." When the screen showed Ku Kui Ke tearfully thanking his rumored girlfriend assistant Lorraine, Chow Wai Man said, "You don't just have to sing well, you can't even change assistants! Gei Jai, actually you have to thank me too. Because Lorraine originally helped me. If I didn't offer her to you, where would you get so much soup?" Gei Jai
awkwardly laughed and even misread the category.
