Show Notes
Adventure Films As a Film Genre Show Notes
  • Earlier definition of Adventure Film on Wikipedia (source): Adventure films are a genre of film. They typically involve characters who must traverse rugged terrain, solve puzzles, and evade traps while journeying to a treasure-like destination. Generally, adventure films take place outside, in the wilderness.
  • Current Wikipedia definition: Adventure films are a genre of film. Adventure Films are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. Adventure films are very similar to the action film genre, in that they are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the film viewer. Rather than the predominant emphasis on violence and fighting that is found in action films, however, the viewer of adventure films can live vicariously through the travels, conquests, explorations, creation of empires, struggles and situations that confront the main characters, actual historical figures or protagonists.
  • Pirate and/or ‘at sea’ films: Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Pirate Movie, Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Mutiny on the Bounty, Master and Commander, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Pirate-like films: The Prince Bride, Count of Monte Cristo
  • Explorers: The Mummy series, Indiana Jones series, Goonies, King Kong
  • More Action-centric: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
  • Kid-Centric: The Never Ending Story, Cloak & Dagger, Bridge to Terebithia
  • Fantasy-Adventure: Alice in Wonderland, Labyrinth, The Secret of Moonacre, Timetrip: The Curse of the Viking Witch / Vølvens Forbandelse, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
  • Adventure-Westerns: The Good, The Bad and The Weird
  • Sword & Sandals Adventure Films: Clash of the Titans (1981), Clash of the Titans (2010), Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
  • Kind of close but feel a bit off: Robin Hood films
  • Unseen but I suspect would be a good fit: Sinbad films, Zathura, National Treasure,
  • Upcoming: Three Muskeeters (2011) and The Hobbit (2012)
  • Shannon's Favourite or Current-ish releases: Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
