A few notes: these projections are for original episodes (no repeats) aired in the 4th quarter of 2011. Series premieres will likely be .3-.4 higher, thanks to network marketing pushes, and then tend to go down over time. We'll be updating the numbers after we see full pilots and also as we get a feel for the networks' summer promotional campaigns.
CBS: Although, with the exception of A Gifted Man, most of its new shows should do reasonably well, the drop in Two and a Half Men and substitution of Good Wife for Undercover Boss on Sunday still result in a small decline over the week, enough to make for a close race for first in the Fall with FOX.
ABC: With the exception of Last Man Standing, not much traction from the new shows, although there don't seem to be disasters on the order of last year's My Generation or Whole Truth.
NBC: Taking the first step along a long road (even where their new shows improve over last year), it's not enough to move the network's overall ratings ahead in any meaningful way. The outlook should improve in January when The Voice rejoins the NBC schedule.
FOX: The addition of X Factor helps two nights of the week, but Terra Nova could be a costly disappointment. If Terra does work, FOX will challenge CBS for #1 in the Fall, setting up a monster season for FOX when American Idol takes them to another level in midseason.
