New this week on the Worldwide Box Office Chart: The Smurfs crosses the $500 million worldwide mark (though it is unlikely to catch the next film above it, Cars 2 at $550 million); Rise of the Planet of the Apes continues to slow down overseas and will stay at #11, just behind Thor; The Help is stubbornly stuck at #26, unable to pass Hop; and The Lion King in 3D is just starting to get going overseas and should break into the Top 30 chart as early as next week. Currently, The Lion King is at $140 million worldwide (an estimated $124 million final domestic gross and $16 million overseas to date). Just another $10 million overseas will out the Disney re-issue at #30 on the chart, just behind Limitless.
One other movie that might sneak onto the chart soon is Final Destination 5, which was very medicore in North America but surprisingly strong internationally. The horror sequel grossed only $42 million domestic but $98 million overseas -- and its still growing outside North America. In fact, since Rise of the Planet of the Apes in early August, Final Destination 5 is the only film released to gross over $30 million overseas.
