Deadline has preliminary figures for Thursday's boxoffice, and they appear to be fairly steady with Wednesday, consistent with last year's pattern but below 2010's totals. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL (Paramount) remains at the head of the pack with $6.2M, down about 10%. This compares with $7.1M for last year's #1 on the Thursday before Christmas, Little Fockers. Behind it are last week's holdovers, SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (Warners) with $4.8M and ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED (20th) with $3.9M (each up about 15% for the day), which are similarly below the $6.1M and $5.6M earned by Tron: Legacy and True Grit in 2010.
Wednesday's openers follow, as THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (Sony) had $3.1M (down around 10%) and THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (Paramount) had $2.4M (up around 4%), both below the $3.3M and $3M in 2010 for Yogi Bear and Chronicles of Narnia.
Entering Christmas weekend, the holiday totals for the top 5 are running about 20% below 2010. However, last year Christmas Eve, the slowest boxoffice day of the holiday season, was on Friday, so a year-to-year comparison for that day won't be meaningful. Also, by this point in 2010 all the year's wide releases had opened, while this year WE BOUGHT A ZOO (20th), WAR HORSE (DreamWorks/Disney) and THE DEADLIEST HOUR (Summit) are still to arrive.
