Movie Box Review

I can't help but be excited to see The Square hitting the theatres, or theatre, here in Toronto this weekend. First up, it's co-written & starring Joel Edgerton (King Arthur (2004), The Waiting City), and to be honest his involvement alone is enough to get me to see something. Add to that it's the directorial debut from his brother, Nash Edgerton, and now I'm more than curious. If I needed any more convincing, Australian thrillers have been killer recently (Cactus, The Loved Ones). Now, I've only watched a few moments of the trailer but I know I'll be checking it out. It also stars Claire van der Boom, David Roberts and Anthony Hayes.

Adding some giggles to this weeks Thrills, Chills and Spills with an exclusive advance screening of Passenger Side on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 8:00pm at The Royal with Special Musical Guests Mac McCaughan and Jim Wilbur of Superchunk and Portastic. Passenger Side is a urban road movie starring Adam Scott and Joel Bissonnette as brothers on an inadvertent journey around town together. The dynamic between to two is amazing, with pitch perfect dialogue that gives the relationship depth and distance at the same time. Written & directed by Matthew Bissonnette (Who Loves the Sun, Looking for Leonard). Passenger Side was a selection for Canada's Top Ten 2009 and will opens theatrically in limited release April 23, 2010. Scott Pilgram vs. The World trailer has arrived. It looks pretty fun and although I've never read the graphic novels that it's based I'm always interested in what Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) is up to. I love the Toronto-ness of it. TTC Buses! Casa Loma! Bring it! Also, had no idea Anna Kendrick was in it. The film stars Michael Cera who has to 'defeat' the 7 enemies of his new girlfriend. It will hit theatres on August 13, 2010

The thriller release of this week would have to be Atom Egoyan's latest Chloe starring Julianne Moore as Catherine, a women who hires a Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) to see if her husband (Liam Neeson) is faithful. Also stars Nina Dobrev ("The Vampire Diaries") and Max Thieroit. Chloe hits theatres tomorrow!

First up this week to get you thrilled is that it appears that yes, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be gracing our theatres soon! I saw this poster outside the Varsity theatre in Toronto an it notes an April 2, 2010 release (although I've also heard earlier). The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a Swedish (already set for a 2012 remake) and is the first in a trilogy based on books of the (followed by The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest) all by the late Stieg Larsson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / Män som hatar kvinnor is directed by Niels Arden Oplev and stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. Sneak peak of the upcoming Predators films over at the films website from Robert Rodriguez, and trailer should be out today as well! The sneak peak looks pretty promising, I like the visual style and the characters already. It's going for a prequel feel and the description indicate it doesn't want to be 'yet another sequel' which I get but it really does have the feeling of the original. So weird to see Adrien Brody in an action film, but he definitely will be a highlight. I'm more excited now about the film than I was before! Predators hits theatres July 7, 2010.

Buried gets a Release Date! The one man thrillerness of Buried starring Ryan Reynolds gets a released date of September 24, 2010. Looking forward to hearing more about the film as we get closer to the day! Thanks to Screen Rant for spreading the word.

Another release date set is that of the Coen Brother's remake of the western True Grit which will grace screens this Christmas - December 25, 2010. Also news on the True Grit front is that Barry Pepper has joined the cast.

More casting goodness for the upcoming Conan film. Ron Perlman has been cast as Conan's father Corin. Also joining the cast is Saïd Taghmaoui (Breaker in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra). Conan will star Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex in "Stargate: Atlantis") in the title role, will be directed by Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th (2009), Pathfinder) is set to release in 2011. For something that we don't have to wait quite so long for, it appears that we will be seeing Michael Caine going vengeful in Harry Brown. Posters have been cropping up around town (see below) and this week the trailers started surfacing as well. Thrill of this week looks to up tomorrows release of Repo Men starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. Not to be confused with last years Repo! The Genetic Opera, which is a rock opera, but both appear to feature rather aggressive organ repossession techniques.

Trailer Time!

New Tron Legacy trailer! Although called a teaser trailer, its 2m 20sec! That's pretty long for a teaser which usually are more in the 10 - 30 second range. I've not been keeping super tabs on Tron Legacy because I wanted to stay spoiler free but once the trailer started I couldn't resist watching. That may have been because I love listening to Bruce Boxleitner's voice - what can I say, die hard B5 fan. Anyhow, I think they've done a great job with it, especially some how keeping the visual style of the original Tron without it looking like it's from 25 years ago. Impressive. But, as most trailers I think it shows to much. Watch only 1/2 way if super spoiler sensitive. Tron Legacy is scheduled to release Friday December 17, 2010, and yes it's going to be in 3D.

Thanks to the folks over at Geeks of Doom for the heads up on the new Robin Hood trailer. When the first Robin Hood (2010) trailer came out I was a little was hesitating over getting excited about the film, mostly because of the music and style made it feel formulaic. BUT - I'm loving the new trailer, it shows a lot (2m 30s trailer!) but gives a much better sense of the stories and characters. I'm thrilled to being back to being excited about the film. Robin Hood is set to releases Friday May 14, 2010.

Two trailers in two days for those of us anxiously awaiting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Yesterday we got the 10 second teaser trailer and then this morning the full 90 second trailer debuted online (and will in theatres tomorrow March 12, 2010 with Remember Me). I had anticipated we would see a more action-packed trailer, but I'm happily surprized that the tone and content remain surrounded on the characters and their emotions & relationships, which is truly the heart of the series. But with David Slade (30 Days of Night) directing everyone is expecting action & darkness - and a possible draw for more male viewers. So far, not seeing that as the focus here and I'm thrilled. It may certainly turn up in the film though, which would still be cool The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is scheduled to released Wednesday June 30, 2010.

In Theatres:
Alice in Wonderland (2010) had a huge debut weekend smashing the Box Office around the world. It had the highest grossing weekend for 2010 so far, by a fair amount. It's great to see a fantasy focused film with a female protagonist achieve such success. Apparently the box office takings for 2010 are higher than 2009, but even if you look at the numbers compared to 2009 weekend grosses, it would have placed No.2 in Canada (with $8.63M) and North America ($116.1M) coming second only to The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Over in the UK it would have been 3rd, only after Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Out this Week
The thriller of the week would have to be Green Zone, or as some people call it the 'Non-Bourne-Bourne Film'. Hard to argue with that considering it stars Matt Damon as a 'searching for the truth' military type and it directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum). But, I liked both the 2nd and 3rd Bourne films and continue to enjoy Matt Damon's work so I'm definitely going to give it a shot, even if it did feel like the trailer showed us too much. Also out in limited release this week is The Red Baron, a historical biopic on Baron Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron. And if you missed it the first time round, the 6-time Oscar Winning film The Hurt Locker to returns to theatres this week according to Maple Facebook Page.

Ian McShane cast as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Yes, there arrrrrgh going to be more pirates films in the future. Geeks of Doom reports that Ian McShane has been cast in Pirates 4 aka Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as the the villain Blackbeard. I guess this means I finally have to watch the third in the series. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is set to release May 20, 2011, which was the date that Thor was to be released, but that's been revised to May 6, 2011. Matthew Goode as The Hobbit?
Seems fitting to report on Middle Earth while doing the Lord of the Rings readalong, Screen Rant is reporting that Matthew Goode (A Single Man, Leap Year, Watchmen) has auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Guillemo Del Toro / Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. First thoughts I think are that he'd be perfect. Yep, clear eyes that twinkle and does that open yet innocently mischievous thing well. I'd buy him as a hobbit, er The Hobbit. I've not kept close tabs on this film as it's currently slated for 2012 release, however IMDb lists a Part 1 and Part 2? Really? I know he was an adventureous bloke, but 2 films? At least they are both to come out in 2012.

Roy Billing as Chief Dufflepud in Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
NarniaFans.com shares an image of Roy Billing as Chief Dufflepud in the upcoming film Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I wish I could comment more on the pic or casting choice but reading the book is still on my list of books to read this year, and with a Dec 10,2010 release date I still have plenty of time to get to the book!

Possible Paranormal Activity 2 Directors Possibilities
I don't usually like commenting until things are set in stone, but I can't help but share the possible directors for the sequel to last year's horror-indie-that-could Paranormal Activity as noted in the LA Times. Brace yourself. Names being thrown around are: Brian De Palma (Redacted, Femme Fatale, Scarface), Brad Anderson (Transsiberian) and Greg Mclean (Rogue, Wolf Creek). I voting for Greg Mclean - Wolf Creek scared the crap out of me and Rogue is a not only a gorgeous film to look at, but a great thriller as well. Go Greg Mclean! Although the director isn't decided yet, a released date has been set for Friday October 22, 2010 - just before Halloween and also a Full Moon :)

New Nightmare or Elm Street Déjà vu?
A new trailer has been added for the upcoming film A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). Now, we know it's a reboot - and I'm okay with that. The trailer starts off impressive and strong and then gets very familiar. Too familiar for my tastes. But, I can't help myself from going to see it. Also, I revisited the original a few years back and was surprized that it felt way more cheesy than I remembered. So, maybe this new kind of redux will deliver a deluxe. Anything is possible! A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) hits screens April 30, 2010.

But, I wanna be scared NOW!
Don't fret, not much time to wait for scares. The big thrilling & chilling film out this week would have to be The Crazies which comes out tomorrow Friday February 26, 2010 and stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell and Joe Anderson. It's a remake of a 1973 George A. Romero film of the same name. I'm shocked to say I've not seen one poster for it around town, but I've seen the trailer many times and if you want to see that you can watch it here.
