THE BIJOU: Crazy Stupid Early Weekend Boxoffice

Deadline has early Saturday and weekend estimates, but they don't clarify much.  As of right now, the claim is that COWBOYS AND ALIENS is at $26.2M for Friday/Saturday, with THE SMURFS at $25.9M.  If those numbers hold, logic would say that Smurfs should have the upper hand with its family Sunday matinee audience, but don't underestimate Universal's powerful incentive to find quarters under the sofa cushions and avoid an embarrassing defeat.  And whatever is declared on Sunday may well be reversed on Monday.

As of now, CRAZY STUPID LOVE is being estimated at exactly the same $18.6M as Friends With Benefits had last week, but with more potential upside in the weeks to come.  (Friends is headed for a 50% drop this weekend.)

With its 62% fall, CAPTAIN AMERICA seems likely to be the #2 superhero movie of the summer domestically, below Thor and above X Men:  First Class (and of course Green Lantern), but if its declines don't slow down, there's a chance it'll fall behind X Men.  As expected, HARRY POTTER should become the #1 film in the franchise domestically by the end of Sunday.

Be sure to read Mitch Metcalf's analysis of the official weekend estimates and international grosses as soon as they're available later on Sunday.
