The Sked: SUNDAY RATINGS February 12

CBS hit the jackpot last night with amazing ratings for The Grammy Awards, perfectly timed with an music icon's death and the return of Adele's voice.  Sports and live events continue to remain the point of relevance for the broadcast networks.

               Nightly Primetime Average
Sunday         CBS    ABC    FOX    NBC
02.12.2012     11.3   1.9    1.6    1.6
02.13.2011     8.3    2.0    2.3    0.9

CBS aired the 54th Grammy Awards last night with the backdrop of Whitney Houston's death Saturday and achieved a 14.1 Adult 18-49 rating for the awards and performance special, the highest young adult rating since 1990 and up 41% from last year's 10.0 rating.   60 Minutes aired in its normal time period at 7:00 pm ET and averaged a good but not extraordinary 2.9 rating.  Last year on this night: 60 Minutes (2.0) and Grammy Awards (10.0).

CBS Sun    High Low  01.1 01.8 1.15 1.22 1.29 2.12

Since it is the February ratings sweep period, ABC was forced to air original episodes against the Grammys, potent competition in normal years but absolutely overwhelming last night.  America's Funniest Home Videos actually had a decent outing at 7:00 against 60 Minutes, and Once Upon a Time did pretty well, managing to stay above its season low.  But Desperate Housewives and Pan Am plunged to new lows.  The episodes were listed as originals, but the ratings certainly look like repeats.  Ouch.  Last year on this night: AFHV (1.9), Extreme Makeover Home Edition (1.6), Desperate Housewives (2.7) and Brothers & Sisters (1.7).

ABC Sun    HigHh Low  01.1 01.8 1.15 1.22 1.29 2.12
AFHV       2.0  1.1  --   1.4  1.2  1.1  1.9  2.0*
Once Upon  4.0  2.9  1.1R 3.7  3.3  3.2  3.5  3.0*
Desp House 3.2  2.6  --   3.0  2.7  2.6  --   1.8*
Pan Am     3.1  1.2  --   1.3  1.2  1.2  --   0.7*

FOX suffered a similar fate: The original episodes from 8-10 pm each set season lows against the mammoth ratings on CBS.  Last year 8-10 pm on this night: Simpsons (2.7), Bob's Burgers (2.1), Family Guy (3.2) and Cleveland Show (2.4).

FOX Sun    High Low  01.1 01.8 1.15 1.22 1.29 2.12
Simpsons   5.4  2.0  1.5R 2.3  5.4  --   2.4  2.0*
Napoleon   4.4  1.7            4.4       2.1  1.7*
Cleveland  2.2  2.2  --   2.2  --   --   --
Family Guy 4.4  2.5  1.7R 3.1  4.4  --   3.1  2.5*
Amer Dad   3.0  1.7  1.5R 2.2  --   --   2.4  1.7*

NBC aired a Whitney Houston-themed Dateline, which averaged a 1.6 rating from 7-9 pm, followed by Fear Factor from 9-11 pm (1.5).  Kind of a quiet way for Fear Factor to leave the scene, but it certainly improved the time period for NBC, which suffered a sub-1 rating with Harry's Law repeats against the Grammys last year.  On this night last year:  Dateline 7-9 pm (1.2), Harry's Law 9 pm (0.8) and Harry's Law 10 pm (0.7).
