BRIDESMAIDS is having a very solid opening weekend, particularly given its relatively low budget. We'll see how word of mouth holds up the rest of the weekend, but for now Universal has to be very happy--as do Kristen Wiig's talent reps.
THOR's hold is OK, but on a weekend where it faced no new direct competition (and with PIRATES 4 on its heels), Paramount/Marvel may have hoped for better.
If you close your eyes tight, it'll be as though PRIEST never even existed.
Look for both SOMETHING BORROWED and JUMPING THE BROOM to have full weekend drops that are higher than usual, since they'll be coming off big Sundays numbers last week for Mother's Day.
Two high-profile limited debuts didn't do much: both EVERYTHING MUST GO with Will Ferrell (in 218 theaters) and HESHER (in 40) won't get much past $3000 per theater. Meanwhile, THE BEAVER tried expanding to 105 theaters, and is headed for an even-more-disastrous $1500 in each.
The next 2 weekends should be among the highest of Hollywood's summer, with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4, THE HANGOVER PART II, and KUNG FU PANDA 2 all pouring in. Next week will also bring one of the notable summer limited runs, Woody Allen's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, which based on its Cannes reception may get some of his better recent reviews; Allen's movies disappear when there's no critical support, but Vicky Christina Barcelona and especially Match Point have been very healthy hits for him in the past few years.
