DVD Releases for May 10, 2011

DVD Releases for May 10, 2011 bring us one of the most epic trilogies of recent history, Sean Bean in period goodness, raw relationship dramas & more.

  • Stieg Larsson's Dragon Tattoo Trilogy the epic Swedish trilogy that tore up the screens last year hits DVD in a sweet, complete package for the completists out there (like me!)
  • Black Death Starring Sean Bean, this mystery/thriller is set during the plague and I was quite leery about but ended up really enjoying. It's got an creepy tone, harsh adventure zeal and certainly kept me on edge. Definitely worth checking out.
  • Unknown Liam Neeson stars as a man travelling in Berlin with his wife but after an accident has no recollection of his past. Pretty interesting mystery with some action and thriller elements (available on Amazon.com as of June 21, 2011).
  • Blue Valentine Raw and real performances by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling are what make this relationship drama so real it hurts. I wish there had been more romance, but if you are looking for something visceral and real, this is easily the one to pick.
  • Life with Murder Canadian documentary following a family who faces tragedy after a horrible crime is committed but also showcase the amazing resilience and strength of family.
  • The Illusionist BluRay/DVD Combo Oscar-nominated animated film that's easily charmed people over form all over.
  • The Concert new kind a musical/comedy with set thirty years ago and following and conductor of an orchestra after being fired becomes a cleaner and has a whole 'get the band back together' feel.
  • Almighty Thor hot off the heels of the theatrical release of Kenneth Branagh's Thor, this version just played on the weekend on SyFy and stars Cody Deal, Kevin Nash, Richard Grieco and Patricia Velasquez.
  • I Saw the Devil With the tagline "Abandon All Compassion" I'm a little leery, but given this one is from director Kim Jee-Woon who brought us The Good, the Bad, the Weird I can't help but be curious.
  • Legend on BluRay 80's fantasy film starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara & Tim Curry and directed by Ridley Scott. This one has a bit of a cult status to it, although it never quite stuck with me. Might be time for a rewatch (available on Amazon.com as of May 31, 2011).
  • Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Again concert film of the earnest singer with the beautifully brushed hair will be released this Friday May 13, 2011.
  • No Strings Attached romantic comedy starring Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Kline.
