The Hogwarts Express has started its journey: last night's midnight showings of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS (PART 2) blew past the previous midnight record of $30M (Twilight: Eclipse) and grossed an incredible $43.5M from those screenings alone. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this included sold-out houses for every single 3D midnight performance in the country. (My review is here.) Just for a little context, that midnight gross alone is already the highest single-day boxoffice take of 2011, beating the full opening day of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which mustered a mere $37.7M.
Next: the single day all-time record is currently $72.7M, held by Twilight: New Moon. With $43.5M already in Harry's Gringotts account, it's hard to imagine that one will stand for more than a few more hours...
