Canada's Top Ten 2011

Photobucket

Canada's Top Ten for 2011 was announced yesterday and it's fitting that the 2011 films are it's 11th Year. Wow, has it really been that long? I love how Canada's Top Ten celebrates & honours Canadian film each and every year and I always look forward to pouring over the title, noting how many I've seen, loved and looked forward to throughout the year. For this years installment I think I'd best be attending this screening series and I've seen a lonely 1 title for the list and it's the extreme-violence fest of Hobo With a Shotgun from director Jason Eisener (Treevenge) starring Rutger Hauer. And how amazing is it that a film that extreme is in the Top Ten? Gotta love it. I also love that Guy Maddin's Keyhole is on the list and I missed it at TIFF this year and I've heard such good things about Jean-Marc Vallée's Café de flore that it's been firmly planted on my to-see list for weeks. It's also an exciting opportunity to see Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz before it's May 2012 theatrical release and the I'm sure David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method will be a big draw as well. I also love that the list always brings new films to my attention, often Quebec cinema, and this year those new & exciting titles are Marécages and Le Vendeur, both of which are feature film directorial debuts. Often I head out to a few of the films, but I think this year I might have to wild and see them all. It's great timing to as it runs so early in the year when we don't get too many regular theatrical releases to choose from. Just hope for good weather!

Canada's Top Ten will play at TIFF Bell Lightbox from January 5 - 15, 2012, and in addition to the film series, there will be a Filmmaker Panel Discussion: A Canadian Gangster on Saturday, January 7, 2013 with Guy Maddin, Nathan Morlando and Jason Eisener to discuss their crime/gangster films.

Canada's Top Ten 2010

Photobucket
Above: Curling

Yesterday the 10th annual Canada's Top Ten was announced, celebrating Canadian feature & short film alike. I love seeing the Canada's Top Ten list, and each year I hope that I've seen more films on the list when it's released than the year before. Not so much this year as I've sadly only seen three films so far with Last Train Home, Splice and the phenomenal Trigger. But seeing the list is a great way to hone in on some of the fantastic Canadian film that is offered every year, and it's also a great way to see some of the Québécois which sadly we don't often get to see on Ontario screens. I'm thrilled to see Denis Côté's film Curling makes the list this year as he creates uniquely beautiful films like Carcasses and Nos vies privées / Our Private Lives, and I can't wait to see Curling as well. More familiar titles include Les Amours imaginaires / Heartbeats from Xavier Dolan (J'ai tué ma mère), the compelling drama Incendies from Denis Villeneuve (Polytechnique) and just about to be released Barney's Version. And that is just a selection of the features - see full list of all the features and shorts below.

This year's panel discussion is Cast This!: The ins and outs of casting a movie offers insight into the art of casting. Panelists include Denis Côté, Deborah Chow, Ingrid Veninger, John Buchan, Jason Knight, Leonard Farlinger & Jennifer Jonas and will be moderated by Damon D’Oliveira.

Canada's Top Ten 2009

It's always exciting news when Canada's Top Ten is announced. I love hearing which films have been picked and having the opportunity to see great Canadian film, especially films from Quebec which rarely hit Toronto screens but with the Top Ten they are all shown in January at the Cinematheque in Toronto.

This year is an interesting first when reading the list as I recognized each and ever one of the films. One of the heavy hitters this year are Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mère which has kicked up a storm and received huge acclaim everywhere it's played. Two films on the list that actually did make it to Toronto theatres are drama/romance Cairo Time starring Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig and Polytechnique Denis Villeneuve's film based on the 1989 Montreal Massacre. I'm thrilled to see La Donation included in the ten, it is Bernard Émond's his third film in his humanist trilogy exploring Faith (La neuvaine), Hope (Contre toute espérance) and now Charity and the film is absolutely astounding. I'm over the moon excited to see that Alexandre Franchi's The Wild Hunt has been selected, it's a fascinating (fictional) film that explores when real life and LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) collide. I saw The Wild Hunt at TIFF this year and have been aching to see it again since then. But it's not just features, the shorts program is also impressing including the award winning and haunting Danse Macabre, jovial Runaway and many more.

Screenings of the features, shorts and a panel discussion will take place from January 14 – 21, 2010 at Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto. See more infomation on scheduling and tickets here (it's one of the best deals in town).

My Week in Film

Photobucket

The big news around here is getting a new TV. It's almost as big as me! Well the box is almost as tall as me. That being said, I didn't even make it out to the theatre this week! I've been gazing misty eyed at that screen for days. I wish I could share a pic of how clear it is but y'know... copyright is there for a reason.

Since I didn't see anything new, we can double back a bit to Canada's Top Ten as a bit of catch up. It's perfect timing with the Genie nominations as there is a lot of crossover. Out of the top then films I loved Maman est chez le coiffeur / Mommy Is at the Hairdresser’s, which turns out that it is based on the same family as C'est pas moi, je le jure! / It’s Not Me, I Swear!. Both films are based on memoirs family members so there are similar themes between the film but they hold up as their own stories as well. It was great to see the full house for Adoration, followed by a Q&A with director Atom Egoyan. There were quite a few Q&A's over the series including after Pontypool, the small town Ontario zombie-ish film with director Bruce McDonald in in attendance. Many of the films now have 2009 release dates, you can check out the upcoming film schedule here.

This week is all about the mad dash to see what I can left for Oscar nominated films. I have been resisting this year, feeling more drawn to 2009 releases. But, I can't imagine not seeing at least all the best picture nominees and since I'm only at 2/5 that is the task of the week to see the remaining 3 (Milk, Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

If you need to catch up and are free on Feb 21 you are lucky lucky as AMC theatres are showing all 5 of the best picture nominees at a steal of a price: $30. If you have a Movie Watcher card it's only $25. Either way you get to see all the films plus unlimited refills on a free large popcorn. More info on that here.
