Film Fan Fridays for Friday August 14, 2009!

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday August 14, 2009! Although the weather is continually variable this August, the film releases have been consistently amazing. Another 8 films in release this week, including many highly anticipated choices like District 9 and The Time Traveller's Wife. Those are both on my to see list but first and foremost on the schedule is the Toronto After Dark Film Festival which brings Toronto 8 nights with zombie babies to blaxploitation they cover horror, sci-fi, action and genre goodness galore at the funnest film festival in the year. Be sure to check out my daily coverage of the festival here at Movie Moxie from August 14 - 21, 2009.

In limited release this week we have two films, first up was at Toronto After Dark last year, Bill Plympton shows his creative animation and storytelling style in Idiots and Angels. We also have Tetro, a family drama about a man searching for his long lost brother from director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather).

Rare is it a week that the wide release are more fancy tickling that limited, but I know I'm going to see at least half of them. Lets start with District 9, an Sci-Fi/action aliens amongst us film where the trailer gives a documentary feel as well as questions the morality of the aliens treatment as they are segregated from humans. Sounds fascinating to me. We also have the highly romance The Time Traveller's Wife adaptation of the novel by Audrey Niffenegger and starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. For a touch of fun we also have Bandslam from director Todd Graff (Camp) that centres on an unlikely group of teens gets banding together for a band competition. Bandslam is also being promoted as 'The film that will have the next New Moon trailer', although I'm not a fan of promoing trailers, this seems like pretty good target marketing. If you are looking for animation and you liked Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, you are in luck as Hayao Miyazaki is back with a new film, Ponyo. Rounding out the wide releases are Spread starring Ashton Kutcher as a gigalo and the salesman comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard starring Jeremy Piven.

Have a great weekend!

Shannon
