BAFTA Nominations in 2010 (films from 2009)

The BAFTA nominees for 2010 Awards have been announced and it looks like it will be an interesting year for these awards. Three film dominate the nominations with 8 nods each: Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker. Hot on their heels is District 9 with 7 nominations, and then Inglourious Basterds & Up in the Air each with 6 nominations.

It feels like a year with a fair amount of well deserved recognition so far. Thrilled to see that Duncan Jones (Moon) & Sam Taylor-Wood (Nowhere Boy, Love You More) are two of the nominees for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also amazing to see that Carey Mulligan was not only nominated for Leading Actress for her performance in An Education but also is in the running for the Orange Rising Star Award. All talented artist to keep you eye on.

There are a few surprizes in what we aren't seeing such as a nomination for Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria, a film that received two nods for Costumes and Make Up & Hair. I really expected Emily Blunt to get a nod here. I was also hoping for Sam Rockwell to get a Leading Actor nomination for his fantastic performance in Moon, but no luck there however the film did receive nominations for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Production. Also really surprized to see no nomination for Tom Hardy in Bronson as I found that to be one of the strongest performances of the year.

A few of the films haven't hit theatres here in Toronto yet, but they will soon. Mark your calendars for Fish Tank (February 19, 2010), A Prophet (February 26, 2010) and Nowhere Boy (March 26, 2010). For list up more upcoming 2010 releases look here.

The BAFTA's (Orange British Academy Film Awards) will take place on Sunday February 21st 2010. See more info at the BAFTA site.
