Movie Box Review

Well it's no surprize that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen sweeps this past weekend for all three box office charts in Canada, North America and the UK (where it's already in it's second week). It also has the highest opening weekend gross of 2009 for all three box offices bumping out X-Men Origins: Wolverine which had the previous biggest weekend when it opened in May. It will be interesting to see how Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince does in a few weeks. Other interesting box office notations - is anyone else jealous that our friends in the UK had Blood: The Last Vampire released this weekend? It debuted at #7. So far it has a July 10, 2009 limited release in the US but nothing as of yet for up here in Canada.

We are in a bit of a lull for Twilight news with the cast working on various other projects at the moment and Eclipse not yet filming. There are as always lots of photos floating around, like this great one of Kristen Stewert as Joan Jett for the upcoming film The Runaways. There has also been lots about fans going a little crazy.

Buffy Vs Edward
This video has been floating around the web for about a week and seems like everyone I know has seen it. Have you ? The Buffy vs Edward video from Rebellious Pixels is 1) hilarious and 2) interesting commentary on the question/reaction to if the character Edward is creepy stalker type 3) has Buffy kicking butt - which is what she does! It is put together really well and I'll admit it made me miss Buffy. What a great show. We need more kick butt women on TV.

Bella Vs Sookie
Interesting article over at MSNBC comparing the women protagonists Sookie of True Blood and Bella in Twilight and also lightly touches on Buffy and the upcoming TV series The Vampire Diaries. Amazing how it seems that all the vampire/romance stories the women are human and the vampires are men. I wonder if we will see a different take on this at any point.

Daybreakers Gets A Trailer
Daybreakers trailer has arrived and the film gives us a slightly new spin on vampire lore set in a world where vampires outnumber humans. Set to release in early 2010 it stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Isabel Lucan and Sam Neill. Pictures have also been released, check out the poster image and still of Ethan Hawke. This one goes on the will be seeing list.

When Vampire Movies Bite, in a Bad Way
Remember a few weeks ago when I mentioned that TMN was having a bunch of vampire movies on in anticipation for True Blood Season 2 (which has been awesome so far)? Well, I revised Lost Boys which was a lot of fun as always. I also check out Bitten which was so bad I may write up a Non-Review for it. I made it about 40 minutes in but by then I had had enough of the gender crap, bathroom humour an general lack of anything redeeming. Sure, it's going for exploitation style and some of that worked but even so there was contradictory dialogue and unexplained solutions to things noted as problems. But, I don't think I'm the target market. I think it's for people who liked Species and also vampires. Or not. I wouldn't even say it's really a vampire film.

Wai Ka Fai brought his new film WRITTEN BY (JOI SUN HO) to the New York Asian Film Festival as its opening film. After the premiere the film received generally good review from U.S. publications and internet film critics.

After the premiere a question and answer session took place. The audience in order to catch a glimpse of Wai Ka Fai did not leave early. Although male lead Lau Ching Wan could not attend due to work, he recorded a video to be shown at the event. Asian film fans were very passionate and excited as they asked many interesting questions.

Famous U.S. film site salon.com film critic Andrew O'Hehir compared Wai Ka Fai's talent to BEING JOHN MALKOVICH's writer Charlie Kaufman. Wai Ka Fai felt very happy and honored to be called the Asian Charlie Kaufman. However his deepest impression was from a reporter who expressed to him that after watching his film he felt the importance of family, immediately called his father, mentioned this film and caught up. He even said that this was the theme that he wanted to express the most in his film. He felt very touched to have run into someone who gets it in the U.S.

The results are in and The Best Harry Potter Film (so far) is #4 The Goblet of Fire with 29%! I'm a little surprized, I really thought it would have been #3 The Prisoner of Azkaban which was right behind it at 27%. Although I'm currently revisiting the films and I haven't rewatched The Goblet of Fire but will today. I remember not liking it right off the bat but it really grew on me and it will be a treat to watch. The next best was going back to the roots with #1 The Philosopher's Stone at 20%, then the most recent release #5 The Order of the Phoenix with 15% and to no surprize #2 The Chamber of Secrets brings up the caboose at 6%.

There is no shortage of creeping upcoming films for this year, and into 2010 as well.

We start in the summer with Orphan, and there ain't nothing like a horror movie with a creepy kid in it, eh? From the trailer (which feels like it shows way too much of the film) it certainly captures that creepiness well. I know I'll end up seeing it.

A different kind of creep factor is Surrogates with Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell return to the land of Sci Fi which in it of itself is awesome. The film seems to dance with actual concepts, ideas and moral dilemnas! Promising. Plot wise it looks like a combination of Total Recall meets "Neuromancer". The trailer did leave with some reservations because there a lot of ways to misuse virtual reality + host bodies that are awful. We'll see what director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, U-571) does with it!

The Shutter Island trailer has been kicking around for a least week now showing us what is next from Scorcese. I'm admittedly not a Scorcese fan, and this one looks suspiciously like a horror film although classified as a 'drama'. Feels like it's jumping on the horror train to me.

Also not new to the roster of trailers but certainly fits with creepy is the trailer for The Road. Very strange that it is being released same day as Where the Wild Things Are (Oct 16/09), which is based on a (creepy) kids book, but more so everyone I know who is interested in one film is also interested in the other. The Road will be a biggie though, based on a fantastic but really harsh post-apocolyptic book by Cormac McCarthy ("No Country for Old Men"), directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition) and starring Viggo Mortenson. If this doesn't pop up at TIFF'09 I'll be shocked.

Last up is all vampires, literally. Check out the Daybreakers trailer for a slightly new spin on vampire story. Looked interesting enough to only watch the first 1/2 of the trailer.

And if you need something to wash off the creepy feelings, I suggest checking out the new Fame trailer (see Fame review here). Singing, dancing, talent, troubles and just a smidge of attitude. I can't wait!

The funeral of the villain of a generation Shek Kin was held yesterday at the World Funeral Home. A ceremony was held around 10:30AM then the remain was transported for cremation. His ashes will be buried with his late wife Aunt Kin in the Pok Fu Lam Chinese Christian ceremony.

Uncle Kin's friends included Connie Chan Bo Chu, Shek Sau, Lo Dai Wai, Wu Fung, Nam Hung, Lee Heung Kam, Ng Kwan Lai, Melvin Wong Kam Sun and Chiu Nga Chi, Tsui Siu Ming and others yesterday came early to pay their final respect. Chow Yun Fat, Barbara Yung Mei Ling Hong Kong fan club, Eason Chan Yik Shun and his wife and others sent flowers. Shek Sau expressed that the farewell ceremony was very serious and peaceful. He believed that this was the ceremony that Uncle Kin would like. He also pointed out that Uncle Kin was his idol. They played father and son on series. At the time they truly had a father and son feeling. He would like TVB to arrange for a series re-run.

Chan Bo Chu praised Uncle Kin for his respect of his job. Even after years in the business, for every movie he would arrive early on the set. He even paid attention to costumes in order for everything to be perfect. At the same time he treated people very well and was not evil at all. Wu Fung also pointed out that Uncle Kin was someone who respected and enjoyed his job, serious at whatever he did. Since he was able to create the Villain Kin character he was exceptional. As for his most memorable moment of working with Uncle Kin, he said, "Once in a series he slapped me, he really did it and I saw stars afterward!" Sister Kam pointed out that she has seen he and Kwan Tak Hing truly fought during rehearsal. The atmosphere was serious. Looking on from the sideline she was concerned. Also, Nam Hung expressed that she has worked with Uncle Kin on over ten films. She remembered the most about how he took care of the younger generation, how great he was to his wife. She advised young people to properly learn from Uncle Kin's passion for family and respect for his wife.

When Shek Kin's remain was transported for cremation, family and friends were mournful. Carrying Shek Kin's photo son Shek Chi Bun even covered his face with the photo to keep others from seeing his sorrow and reluctance. When family and friends left, the sky went dark and rain came. The crew had to carry umbrellas for family and friends. Uncle Kin early in the month passed away at the age of 96.

THE LEGEND OF ZOMBIE ROAD: THE MOVIE Another terror tale based upon a real life legend is quickly taking place as cinematographer Howard Smith (My Bloody Valentine 3D) and Ethan Terra (Monsterpiece Theatre) are gearing up to take us down one of our country's spookiest of roads.
The Legend of Zombie Road (coming at us in 3D), co-written by Joe Knetter and Terra, centers around one of the top ten most haunted places in America. There are many urban legends surrounding St. Louis' famed Zombie Road and the surrounding area that have endured for decades. One in particular would have us believe that the infamous road is haunted by the ghost of a man known only as "Zombie" who would make his way nightly to the area, where he would stalk and kill party-goers and then return to the asylum before dawn. It is said that he was killed in the asylum after slaying approximately 22 people.

The cast line-up thus far consists of Masiela Lusha ("The George Lopez Show") co-starring with MBV3D alumni Betsy Rue and Kane Hodder, who is set to play the killer. "We are currently still casting two of the film's principal leads. Terra has several genre icons on board, and there will be more cast announcements next week," say producers Ryan R. Johnson and Sean Lourdes.
Gary Tunnicliffe of Two Hours in the Dark and John Carl Buechler of Magical Media Industries will be bringing out the gore.

The Seven Little Fortunes children lived together for ten years, doing everything together they were as close as family. Even though they often feuded, they cultivated a chemistry and psychic bond that would be hard to describe in words.

Among the brethrens, Second brother Yuen Tai and Yuen Bun were the most connected. Yuen Bun said, "Yuen Tai is my nemesis. No matter when I go, he has a way to stand in front of me and then drag me back to see the Master."

Yuen Bun Ran Away, Yuen Tai Searched

When Yuen Bun remembers the past, although he pretends to still be angry his expression is less upset and more accepting. Obviously he is just playing as their bond remains firm. Yuen Bun says, "I remember once I ran away again to work in a plastic facotry. One day some co-workers said that someone was looking for me. I thought who would know I was here? I never expected to see Yuen Tai. He told me to return to the Master. At first I was unwilling, but he said that the Master guaranteed that he would not hit me again. I didn't know why at the time I would believe that. I didn't pick up my salary for working at the factory for 20 some days and followed Yuen Tai back. How amazing was that! Finally I got back to the school, before I even got my foot in the door the Master already started beating me. How capable was Yuen Tai!"

Yuen Tai listens and waits until his younger brother finishes before telling the missing person search secret and showing his elder steady stance. He says, "It wasn't hard to find out where you went, all I had to do was to ask my Ma! Every time you ran away you would go to your Ma. I asked where you went, she not only told me where you were but also cooked a goose egg for me every time. You know how large and delicious goose egg was. Thus each time you ran away, I took the initiative to look for you."

Day and Night Together, Close As Siblings

Yuen Tai's follow the vine to the melon trick might have been skillful, but the relationship between the disciples is closer than actual siblings. The fact is indisputable. Ultimately they spent day and night together, their relationships caem from feuding and arguing. Yuen Biao frankly says, "At the time we wouldn't go home for a long time. Our relationship with actual siblings wasn't as close as with the disciples. Honestly, we were so close that we could tell which brother farted."

Yuen Bun agrees, "We spent day and night together. I dare to guarantee that the time I spent with my own siblings are less than training with the disciples. We really only need to smell the scent to be able to tell who it is. We don't even have to look to know who is there." (14)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third film in the Harry Potter series and it is the time things get a little shaken up and we see changes happening. First up, a change in director from Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) to Alfonso Cuarón whom at the time was best known for directing the racy Oscar nominated Y Tu Mamá También. I know that one had a lot of people taken aback. Then due to the sad passing of Richard Harris, the character of Albus Dumbledore needed to be filled and was with Michael Gambon who is not necessarily known for playing the 'nicest' of characters (see: Gosford Park and The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover) and that one had me a little worried. But, the fears were in vain as we ended up with one of the most well loved films of the Harry Potter series.

The film has a different look and feel from the first two, shrugging off the golden and warm colour scheme and favouring cool colours of white, black, silver, green and grey which give it a more edgy feel. Although all the films have situations and themes that involve danger, this one feels like the first time they demonstrate it in a more sophisticated manner. It literally introduces grey areas, just like the new colour scheme, where not everything is as it appears, people aren't necessarily what they seem and the solution isn't near at hand. They introduce more complex characters into the story where right and wrong it isn't clear cut. Also, the main characters of Harry, Hermione and Ron become more complicated themselves as they transition from reactionary & rudimentary magic to more active & advanced magic, which includes bringing in possible consequences for their active choices and actions. As with the second film, this is a great parallel to the world of being 13 years old where you do start to do things on your own (good or bad) as you gain independence and stronger taste of power.

Even though it branches out to new ideas and themes, it is the first of the series where I actively noticed patterns of the films. We see the introduction of new modes of transportation, new locations outside of school grounds, a new class, magical items/spells and as always new characters. This allows the viewers to gain continual but gradual knowledge of the world as a whole, but also is a great way of showing how the characters grow and become more responsible, capable and worldly every year.

One of the wonderful things about the third film is that the trio of actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint playing Harry, Hermione and Ron respectively, now feel really comfortable in their roles. I found in this film the characters and their relationships feel very flushed out, natural and believable. Speaking of characters we are introduced to a slew on new ones that heighten the enjoyment of the world including charismatic yet always tired Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the eccentric Divination instructor Professor Trelawney (Emma Thompson) and Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) himself. I continue to marvel at how perfect the casting is for these films, all three of the new characters are played brilliantly. Michael Gambon also does a great job bringing a new a different take as Dumbledore, even though his character is not on the screen much we do get a taste of his more hippy vibe and sage like manner which is an interesting choice from Richard Harris who had a more Obi-Wan/grandfatherly tone. It took me a while to warm up to but now I certainly can appreciate both takes on the character.

The film really has everything going for it, the story is interesting, there is great character development, we see new ideas, characters and creatures throughout. But, some of the most charming and memorable moments for me are barely there, yet provide great additions to the tone of the film. Things like the changing of the seasons at Hogwarts, often featuring the Whomping Willow. Or bonding between the guys of Gryffindor. Even the end credits are fantastic. It's the complete package with this film, it really has it all.

* in anticipation of the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Wednesday July 15, 2009, I am doing a weekly countdown to watch & review of the first five Harry Potter films

Accompanying children's growth today may be a cold and emotionless video game and a foreign maid with a language barrier. In the 50s and 60s, without computers or mobile phones, maybe not even television, Seven Little FOrtunes' playmates were Seven Little Fortunes -- a brethren of disciples who spent day and night together.

Despite the gradual passing of time, the fraternal love endured. After seven to ten years of "slave contracts", a year of apprenticeship, then the film industry, their master was Yu Jim Yuen all the same but their experience differed. Some worked as stunt doubles, some stunt coordinators, some in lead roles.....even so, Seven Little Fortunes' relationship remainted close. Second sister Yuen Po says, "After school, we never said goodbye just because we graduated. Instead after leaving we missed those days even more."

Growing Up Together, Like A Family

The disciples met every three months. The ones with a family would bring their other half and children to attend. The disciples sat at one table while the families sat at another. They had casual chats, talked in detail about their school life and reminisced children memories. On the Lunar 2nd, they would also go to Si Mo's Prince Edward Road home for a Lunar New Year visit to express the filial piety. Yuen Po says, "Back then even if the school days were hard to take, once we came out we would really miss them. Every time we met and talked about the past we were truly very happy and savored it a lot."

Even though children always had conflicts, they would very quickly go on as they were. The students' relationships were like a family. Even in their adolescene they never had any awkward and overboard behavior, in comparison to the "14 year old mother" nowadays their relationships were obviously more innocent and valuable.

Remembering the friendship between opposite sexes, Yuen Po laughs, "When we were at school, boys and girls were all in the same room, we trained together, played together. Of course some guys and girls would be particularly good friends, but only because they grew up together. So far no pair has married. Because we did everything together, Master's supervision was very strict and the training was very tough, we absolutely never had any other thought."

Sharing Joy And Pain, Honor Comes First

The school life valued team spirit, group life without individualism, selfishness was not permitted. Growing up under such an environment, one after another honorable people were trained. Back then Sammo Hung Kam Bo docked on the big pier of Golden Harvest and had all the success, yet he did not forget his brethren as he always brought seven or eight fellow disciples with him to work. Little Brother Yuen Tak was one of them. After years of hard work, Yuen Tak finally became a well known martial art coordinator.

Once, Sammo ran into a junior disciple in the U.S., saw that he was down on his luck and working a small job in a restaurant kitchen. Sammo immediately financed a restaurant for his brother. Seven Little Fortunes' childhood although seemed distant, their humanity remained rich. (13)

In the Francis Ng Chun Yu directed TRACING SHADOW (JUI YING) a counterfeit hero union was cooked up as the industry big brothers Jackie Chan, Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and others all supported their film industry junior Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming). In the film the "young landlord" Fong Cho Ming issued the final notice to a poor tenant, "Boss Xu, I now officially notify you, you have not paid rent for 2 years, 9 months and 19 days!" The victim was no other than his old man "Jackie Chan". The in debt "Jackie Chan" could only submit to Fong Cho Ming.

Sharing with stage with the "counterfeit Jackie Chan" for the first time, Fong Cho Ming chased his own "old man" for rent and looked vicious. Finally he had "Jackie Chan", "Lee Nin Kit" and "Lau Tak Wa" begging for mercy, which Fong Cho Ming thought was a lot of fun. Fong Cho Ming even told the press, "I thought the one who played Lee Nin Kit was the most convincing, at the time I thought Lee Nin Kit was visiting the set." Aside from these three, the film also gathered over 20 star look a like actors. They included an impossible to understand Chow Kit Lun, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung who covered his face with a fan, and "superstars" Simon Yam Tat Wa, Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) and Hung Kam Bo. All the look a like actors were the most convincing ones in the Mainland.

Charlie Yeung Choi nei two nights ago attended a Causeway Bay restaurant opening. Charlie expressed that she locked herself away for four or five months in preparation for her first film as a writer and director, CHRISTMAS ROSE. Now she has investors but she would not perform on screen. As her first film as a director, she would like to be able to focus. She said that the on and off screen staff were very supportive of her. For now she first would complete the script then consider casting. She expected the film to start production at the end of the year. As for box office confidence, she said, "Producer Pang Shun told me to focus on the screenplay and not to think too much about anything else."

The Orange Sky Golden Harvest invested ONE NIGHT IN SUPERMARKET received two CCTV6 Chinese Film Media awards at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The film starred Xu Zheng, Jacqueline Li Xiaolu and Kimi Qiao Renliang. CRAZY STONE's Xu Zheng won Best Actor. This year the under 30 year old new director Yang Qing won Best Screenplay, as the youngest and the most "surprised" award winner.

Xu appeared with a bald look. When he heard that he won Best Actor he gave a happy smile. It was his first film award. Since it came from the national media voting, he thought it was very important. Yang Qing said that he never thought that he would be able to win so he did not prepare a tuxedo. He joked, "Even if I wanted to rent one I didn't have enough time to!" Many Hong Kong stars attended this event, among them Karena Lam Ka Yun was the guest presenter.

Wong Cho Nam, Ella Koon Yun Na, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, JJ Jia (Ga Hiu Sun), Angelababy, Race Wong Yuen Ling starred film SHORT OF LOVE (NGAI JAI DOR CHING) two nights ago held its premiere.
