[2012.03.09] TANG WEI SURPRISES WITH HER SUPPORT

NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) two nights ago held its global premiere in Beijing.  Aside from the actors Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Simon Yam Tat Wa, Janice Man Wing Shan, Kay Tse On kay and Dou Xiao, Tang Wei even made a secret appearance and surprised everyone.

The media asked Tang Wei to predict the box office.  She said, "The box office?  It'll definitely be on fire!  So today I come for a first glimpse."  Cheung Ka Fai described the film release as the perfect birth of a child.  As for whether this child was pretty or not, everyone would have an answer after seeing the film.  Actually, Tang Wei has known director Roy Chow Hin Yeung and screen writer To Chi Long for a long time.  This premiere could be considered a reunion.  Chow Hin Yeung was very pleased to see his old friend and praised Tang Wei as a "very natural, hard working and talented actress."  Tang Wei recalled, "I would always remember the director could work so hard that he did not sleep or rest.  I also remember very much how cute To Chi-Long looked in a pair of little red shoes."

Cheung Ka Fai after over 20 years in film went from playing street kids to tough guys.  His acting became more and more mature.  In recent years he have played in police films numerous times.  His tough guy image is well known.  In his new film NIGHTFALL he again accepts a highly difficult challenge.  Ka Fai even said that as someone who loved film he had no way to not act.  Yet he could not say what clear cut goal he had.  "In real life, I often would be confused about what kind of person I am.  I would maintain an attitude of continuous pursuit and would not relax my fighting spirit and abilities.  Yet why I am pursuing, I too am not too sure."  He said that if he did not act he probably would not be able to keep living.  He explained, "Because I really don't know how to do anything else.  If I don't act, maybe it should be time to consider  retirement!"

[2012.02.29] DOU XIAO CANNOT LEARN FROM NICK CHEUNG

Zhang Yimou's favorite Dou Xiao yesterday with Best Actor Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Kay Tse On Kay attended the NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) Beijing press conference.  Dou Xiao in the film played the young Cheung Ka Fai.  Dou Xiao said that although he was unable to work with the Best Actor, he was fortunate enough to promote the new film in Taiwan with Brother Ka Fai and he was very excited.

Dou Xiao also felt that he was somewhat similar to Brother Ka Fai, "Of course we still have differences, he is an elder Best Actor!"  As for the reason that he participated in NIGHTFALL, Dou Xiao revealed that actually the director "fell in love at first sight" with him.  He said, "Director (Roy) Chow Hin Yeung once said to me, finding an actor who can play a young Brother Ka Fai is very hard in Hong Kong.  The director felt that my eyes resembled his so in the end he chose me.  This was also my first movie in Hong Kong.  It was just three short days, for the movie I didn't even have a chance to return to the hotel and rest.  I had my luggage with me the whole time and kept working throughout the night.  Finally after the shoot I went directly to the airport and returned to Beijing."

Cheung Ka Fai in order to better get into character before the shoot spent half a year to train and lose weight.  Finally he got into shape that could rival Bruce Lee's.  Yesterday at the press conference Cheung Ka Fai appeared in a black suit and his fit figure was on display.  He revealed that he suffered a lot during the fitness and diet period for this shape.  "During that period I only had steamed vegetables and chicken.  Once I truly could not tolerate it and ran into a Japanese restaurant fora few pieces of sashimi to satisfy my appetite."

However this was only physical pain, the most painful was becoming isolated on the set.  Cheung Ka Fai complained, "In this film my character due to vocal cord damage couldn't speak.  In order to get into the mood no one on the entire team spoke to me."  Although this was the first time that Ka Fai played a mute, the challenge was not difficult for him at all.

[2012.02.24] DOU XIAO ENJOYS SOME TENDERNESS IN JANICE MAN'S LAP

The star of Zhang Yimou's UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE, Mou Guy Dou Xiao in the film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) worked for the first time with Janice Man Wing Shan, who was born in the same month of the same year as him, and played a couple.  Although they just met, they were as intimate as a young couple.  Dou Xiao even lay on Man Wing Shan's legs without any care and melted away in joy, much to the envy of others.

They in the film developed a tragic love story.  Although they met for the first time, they did their homework and saw the other's films in order to understand each other more.  The intense shoot schedule was no match for them.  Even in an ice cream scene, Dou Xiao even lay in JM's lap and enjoyed the tenderness.  However off camera Dou Xiao could not be more embarrassed; because the director wanted them on the sun scorched roof to eat the melting ice cream while being romantic in the heat for two hours.  They even had to wear heavy coats.  The worst was the mischievous JM often dripped the melting sugar cone on his face.

Dou Xiao however did not mind at all.  JM described Dou Xiao as a big kid so she dripped the ice cream on his face with ease.  She said, "Although we were only together for one day, we already had something in common.  We talked about cars.  He even liked the same brand and type of car as I do.  After being born in the same month of the same year, we have another coincidence."

[2012.02.09] JANICE MAN BELIEVES THAT LOVE IS DESTINED

Janice Man Wing Shan was a February online magazine cover girl.  Janice Man admitted that she did not have anything specific that she looked for in a mate and no one has ever proposed to her.  She was not disappointed thought because she believed it was destined.  Like her relationship with Dou Xiao in her new film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO), even though they were in love they did not end up together.  Speaking of working with Dou Xiao for the first time, JM said that thanks to this overactive person she was not depressed for long during the shoot.  She said, "Actually Shawn's personality is very close to his character in UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE.  He is very active, very happy, which may have something to do with him growing up overseas!"

[2012.01.04] NICK CHEUNG IS FREED FROM HIS DIET

Nick Cheung Ka Fai earlier played the revenge character in his new film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) went on a crazy diet and training regiment.  Two nights ago Ka Fai along with co-stars Janice Man Wing Shan, Dou Xiao, director Roy Chow Hin Yeung and boss Bill Kong Chi Keung went for hot pot casserole in Wan Chai to make up for lost time.

Ka Fai said, "Actually I don't usually binge eat and drink, mainly after the film was finished everyone wanted to get together like an early Lunar New Year reunion."  Ka Fai said that he would take some time off until after the Lunar New Year.  The film has already been sold to the U.S. and has interest from Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.  Janice Man and Dou Xiao actually only worked together for two days but they got along famously, as they talked about cars and music.

[2011.12.15] AARIF RAHMAN CATCHES UP WITH ZHOU DONGYU

Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) will have two films including THE ALLURE OF TEARS (KING SING JI LUI) and DEAR ENEMY (CHUN MUK DIK YUN) to be released during the holidays in the Mainland.  Thus Aarif in December will traverse nonstop between China and Hong Kong to participate in film promotions.

Aarif yesterday went to Hangzhou with Joe Chen Qiao-En, Gigi Leung Wing Kei and Dou Xiao to attend THE ALLURE OF TEARS global premiere press conference.  Aarif stated that in his past films his romantic segments have all been lightly touched upon, but ths film was a complete romance.  It was the first romance of his career.  Aarif said that for this type of movies he had to learn how to deliver emotions to co-stars, which was very interesting and fresh.  In addition proper communication before the shoot with co-star Zhou Dongyu was especially important.

In addition, the host asked how Aarif could cry on cue in the film.  He said that the director deserved the credit.  Before the shoot she explained the importance of this scene to him and taught him how to release his emotions.  Aarif even took the chance to catch up with Zhou Dongyu and others on this trip with hot pot casserole.  Aarif said that later Zhou Dongyu will come to promote in Hong Kong and he definitely will introduce her the beautiful Hong Kong scenery at night at the Peak.

The Roy Chow Hin Yeung directed action suspense new film NIGHTFALL (DAI JUI BO) two nights ago wrapped. Actors including Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Janice Man Wing Shan, Candy Yu On On, Michael Wong Man Tak and "Mou Guy" Dou Xiao along with screenwriter Christine To Chi Long attended the farewell event on the set. Ka Fai even had a little fun at the excuse of Dou Xiao who did not know any Cantonese. He also promised to donate 100,000 in cash for the celebration lucky drawing. The team applauded in response.


Ka Fai for the character went through a hellish weight loss program for several months. Thus the team two nights ago prepared the dish that he wanted to have the most during the period, drool chicken (steamed chicken with chili sauce). Wong Man Tak also brought two bottles of red wine for everyone. Ka Fai worked with Dou Xiao for the first time. Although he admired him very much, he did not forget to have a little fun with him. When they raised their glasses to toast the film's success in advance, Ka Fai asked Dou Xiao to repeat after him, "In the future at the film celebration, I will give 80 to 100 thousand for the lucky drawing!" Dou Xiao who did not understand Cantonese asked what that meant? Ka Fai joked, "You don't need to ask, just repeat after me and you will be fine. I say it, then you say it." Finally Dou Xiao really repeated what Ka Fai said and cracked everyone up. Later when Dou Xiao learned the "truth" he immediately jumped and said that the Best Actor fooled him. However the director generously joined Ka Fai's "trap" and said, "If we will have a celebration, I will bring all the money for the lucky drawing!" The actors cheered enthusiastically.


Ka Fai's character was very heavy this time. Because his character was mute, he did not have any line to deliver or remember and his performance was even more difficult. He said, "All of the emotions had to be expressed through the body, the eyes and such, it really was very challenging." As for working with Simon Yam Tat Wa, Ka Fai said, "Yam Tat Wa used to always play the boss, this time in the film I beat him and killed him. It felt great! I believe this film should bring two or three Best Actors!"


Dou Xiao in the film played a couple with Man Wing Shan. Although they worked together for the first time they had chemistry and no gap at all during the shoot. This film was Dou Xiao's first Cantonese dialogue film. Although he was with the team for only a short time, he thought this was a very exciting production journey. Man Wing Shan made a lot of preparation before the shoot like studying piano playing for over three months. In addition she already cultivated a connection with the team. Thus at the wrap she was very reluctant to part. However she stated that she would continue to learn to play the piano.


In addition, earlier when Yam Tat Wa and Kay Tse On Kay left, the team celebrated with champagne with them on the streets of Lan Kwai Fong and attracted many onlookers. Kay did not feel well that day and was worried that she would be unable to finish her final scene. Luckily she persisted and the director was very touched.

The Barbara Wong Chun Chun directed Christmas tear jerker TEARS OF FALLEN CITY (KING SING JI LUI) last night held its global production start press conference in Shanghai Gong Stage. The director along with the cast including Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Joe Chen Qiao-En, Dou Xiao, Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) and Zhou Dongyu attended. The other lead actress Gigi Leung Wing Kei was absent due to a fever. The director thus sat in Gigi's seat and leaned on Siu Chai.

The film will be shot entirely in Shanghai and its story was formed with "three tears". The first tear starred Zhou Dongyu and Lee Chi Ting. The director before the production began asked them to cultivate their relationship in advance in Shanghai and they have already begun to work for five days. Dongyu worked with Dou Xiao in her previous film UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE, this time she worked with Lee Chi Ting. She said that she has been very lucky to be able to work with them and praised Chi Ting as humorous and energetic while Dou Xiao was more of a gentleman. Chi Ting said that Dongyu looked mild mannered but actually was quite mischievous. However she warmed up slowly. When they first met, after he introduced himself she did not say another word or gave any response. After a few days they were much closer. On stage Chi Ting often took the initiative to lure Dongyu into talking.

As for any chance of developing for them, Dongyu was stunned while Chi Ting said that would depend on destiny. Was she his type? He said that he could not say whether this was the type. Dongyu said that in the film they had a lot of fate. Dongyu in September will start at the Beijing Film Academy. Would she make less movies? She said, "This four year chance (to study) didn't come easily. Before hand preparing for the examination was very tough, so I would cherish it and center around learning."

Siu Chai in the film played someone whose life eroded his dream. Later he picked up his determination again to fulfill his dream. Everyone knew that racing was Siu Chai's dream, but in the past due to work he gave up many racing opportunities. However he decided to pick up his dream again in September and participate in a desert race. Siu Chai said, "If you have a dream but don't go after it, you would regret it. Even failure is better than nothing." In the film he and Gigi were forced to break up. Although the shoot has not officially started, the script alone brought tears to his eyes.

Qiao-En and Dou Xiao played an older woman young man couple. In real life Qiao-En honestly admitted that she has tried such a relationship, but he was only a year or two younger than her. As for any love with regret, she humorously said, "No, none of my boyfriends die." Yesterday Dou Xiao with the flu said that in real life has not have such a relationship but would not mind it.

Mainland new actors Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao teamed with director Zhang Yimou on their first film. They were both nervous and happy about this rare chance, they remembered Zhang Yimou's advice of properly living and acting. They hope that in the future they will be able to repay the director with good performance.

Zhang Yimou's new film UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE stars two film industry new comers Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao who played a simple yet deep love story. As the new generation Mou Girl, Zhou Dongyu honestly said that she felt nervous and honored to make her first films. She even said that playing Jingqiu changed her previously ordinary secondary school student life. "I didn't have any contact with this industry (film) and didn't know that after the film release it would bring such attention. At first I was a little nervous, but I still thank many for paying attention to our film. I have pressure in the future, but it is a driving force for us. We hope to properly work to repay the director." Having never thought about being an actor, Zhou Dongyu said that she ran into the biggest difficulty on her first production -- being natural. "The director in order to capture the feeling of being strangers kept me and Dou Xiao apart, we only saw each other in scenes. The hardest part of acting is acting natural, a lot of attention has to paid to even the most minute item. I thought this was a film actor life."

Also in his first film, Dou Xiao said that Zhang Yimou's film has already left a deep impression when he was little. He was nervous at the first meeting with this famous director, but they spent more time together he realized that he was friendly and intimate. He even remembered the advice from the director. "He said to properly live and act, to be someone who does the job well. I feel as a person or an actor I have to seek improvement, which is worthy learning. Also many teachers in the film, their acting whether where they put their hand or other areas were very detailed and professional. They led us to perform naturally and taught us a lot." Playing Laosan, Dou Xiao honestly hoped to be just like the character and find the simplest romance. As for spark with co-star Zhou Dongyu, Dou Xiao said that after working together they already became good friends. However she was not the type that he liked. "I like girls who are quiet and have to laugh." Zhou Dongyu said, "I like naive and simple guys. We only see each other on the set and promoting, the rest of the time we are busy on our own."

UNDER was a big Mainland hit, the touching story left deep impression with many viewers. However actually behind shooting this touching scenes they also had funny incidents. Zhou Dongyu said, "For one scene by the river with Laosan, the weather was good and mosquitoes were by the river. However during the shoot because I couldn't move, the mosquitoes bit me. Although I was shooing away mosquitoes without affecting the shoot, after making the shoot my leg was all red and itchy."

The over two weeks long 7th Annual Hong Kong Asian Film Festival closed last night. The event selected MERRY GO ROUND (DUNG FUNG BOR) and UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE to be the closing films. Leads of the two films Ella Koon Yun Na, Terry Robin Kwan, Wilfred Lau Ho Lung and Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao attended.

Last night was also MERRY's premiere. Lead actress Ella was also this film festival's ambassador. Although she invited her family she did not invite her boyfriend. Ella said that friends who have seen the advanced screening all said she performed well, which made her very happy. However she never thought about winning an award. However if she would she would be happy as well because it would be a recognition of her. For this film, Ella even worked on location at the Tung Wah coffin home. Afraid of death she began to cherish things a lot more and her temper has also improved. She said, "If I live to be 90, 1/3 of it is already gone so I have to cherish it. (Have you thought about when to have a baby?) Not yet, now the distance from the mentality of being someone's wife is still very far. (Yet parenthood is best started young?) Science is very advanced now, you can have one at any time!"

Dou Xiao and Zhou Dongyu came from Shanghai and Beijing respectively, Dou Xiao was working in Shanghai with Dong Jie on the new romance WHITE FLOWER IN AUTUMN. He did not mind working on romantic film and romantic film, instead he was happy to have more chance to learn. What genre would he like to work on the best? [2010.11.02] ZHANG YIMOU TEACHES ACTING WITHOUT RAGE

The Zhang Yimou directed UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE had a lot of jokes during the production since both Dou Xiao and Zhou Dongyu were first time first actors. One scene even took over 100 takes. Luckily Zhang Yimou has been doting these two little actors so the production was completed smoothly!

Speaking of the most memorable experience, it had to be the scene that took over 100 takes. Dou Xiao recalled, "In that scene I was hospitalized. Dongyu suspected that I had Leukemia and took time to keep me company at the hospital. I yelled at her for being silly but was still very touched inside." Yet since it was the two little actors' first silver screen performance, they were very nervous inside and could not successfully express the character's feelings inside. They tried again and again, finally they took over 100 takes before Zhang Yimou accepted one. Zhou Dongyu said, "At the time the mental pressure was enormous. I thought I owed the other workers and we thought the director would be enraged. Who knew he didn't even finch. Each time after cut he would tell us what we needed to add; after the shoot he even told everyone that these two children were slowly improving."

The Zhang Yimou directed UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE's leads Dou Xiao and Zhou Dongyu performed an innocent love and touched tens of thousands of viewers; who knew behind the romance Dou Xiao suffered level ten pain? During the shoot for the more intimate scene, the shy Zhou Dongyu would definitely keep her fingers ready to properly greet Dou Xiao so Dou Xiao dared not try anything.

In the chill they deeply embraced in a big coat, which was very romantic. Dou Xiao said, "This was our first more intimate scene. I followed the director's instruction and had to tightly hold Dongyu; but perhaps she was too shy or something, Dongyu often extended her fingers to poke me and keep me away. That really hurt!" Because in the scene Dou Xiao held Zhou Dongyu in a big coat, Zhang Yimou could not see what was happening underneath and kept telling them to embrace tigher. Yet the tighter they embraced, Dou Xiao hurt more. He even had to make a
loving face. "It wasn't easy to complete this scene. I immediately opened up my shirt to see, my chest had two red marks!" Dou Xiao said.

Having never been in love, Zhou Dongyu felt sorry over this. "Actually I wasn't deliberate, I am just a very shy person. I don't know why the fingers were extended."

[2010.10.13] ZHOU DONGYU REGRETS ABOUT NO TIME FOR DISNEYLAND

The leads of the Zhang Yimou directed UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao promoted in Hong Kong for a few days. Yesterday the duo attended film forum at the Baptist University and met with students. Liu Kai Chi who recently began teaching there was the host. Although Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao were both film industry new comers, yesterday they still attracted over 100 students. Due to the sold out event, a dozen or so students waited outside and grew frustrated at one point.

Four students at the event divided into two teams to play scenes from the film. Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao both praised the students' outstanding performance. Zhou Dongyu was teary eyed from the student performance. The duo's Hong Kong itinerary has been very tightly scheduled, luckily they were able to take time to go out and shop. Dongyu regretted the most that she could not go to Disneyland and hoped to be able to the next time. However, she was happy about trying wonton noodles, fish balls and sausages. After promoting in Hong Kong, the duo later will attend a film festival in Hawaii. This will be their first trip there. Will they bring swimwear along? Dou Xiao said that he still has not thought about what to bring.

Dou Xiao and Zhou Dongyu often promoted together, have they felt any electricity between them? Dou Xiao honestly said no, but during the shoot they were very focused and were good friends. They thanked director Zhang Yimou's for his guidance during the shoot. Dongyu honestly said that at first she was stressed and was afraid that her performance would impact the team. Luckily everyone was very patient.

Called as the simplest love story, the Zhang Yimou directed film UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE will be released next month. Its two leads Zhou Dongyu and Dou Xiao yesterday attended a music video premiere. When they first saw the music video they were teary eyed. Dongyu said that she was so touched that she wanted to cry, but with so many viewers she could only hold back her tears. The 15th Annual Pusan International Film Festival opened last night. Actors Han Ji-Hye and Jung Jun-Ho host the opening ceremony, with many Korean officials and 150 some famous actors and directors around the world in attendance. After the opening ceremony ended, Chinese director Zhang Yimou's UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE opened the film festival.

Before the opening ceremony, UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE held a media screening in the afternoon. After the screening, Zhang Yimou met the media with leads Dou Xiao and Zhou Dongyu. When they appeared, all the flash bulbs glittered in the venue as the sounds of fast shutters filled the room. Zhang Yimou said that he was very honored that his new film was
selected to be the Pusan Film Festival opening film. "I have been to Pusan before. This is a wonderful film festival that has done a lot of work to introduce Asian films and at the same time provided many opportunities to film professionals."

During the screening, the Korean media and film critic responses were similar to its Mainland release. The Zhang Yimou directed new film LOVE OF THE HAWTHORN TREE released new stills and revealed Jing Qiu and Lao San's youthful interaction and innocent romance. Playing Jing Qiu was the third year Hebei high school student Zhou Dongyu, while the lead actor Dou Xiao is currently enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy performance department.

Finally at the Beijing Art Academy, they saw Zhou Dongyu who came to apply for a dance job. The pure and cute Zhou Dongyu immediately caught the assistant director's eyes and later Zhang Yimou's as well. While chatting and auditioning, Zhang Yimou discovered that Zhou Dongyu was already 18 but actually had no understanding of a lot in the real world. At the same time her look and personality were clean and pure.

Lead actor Dou Xiao's family originated from Xian. In his teens he immigrated to Canada. Although he had the same hometown as Zhang Yimou, they were not related as rumored online.
