CineAsia 2011 Gala final night banquet took place two nights ago. Famous film producer Terence Chang Ka Chun received the Producer of the Decade honor. Chang Ka Chun said that this award was an encouragement. In the future he will keep working hard and produce even more good movies for the audience to enjoy. In the past Chang Ka Chun has produced countless films, many of which had both good word of mouth and ideal box office. Yet he has not made one that he was satisfied with. He said, "I always feel the next one will be the best, but from an overall perspective, foreign film FACE/OFF is considered the most complete."

Speaking of future projects, Chang Ka Chun pointed out that in February he will produce the John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) directed SUN SEI LUEN (LIFE DEATH LOVE, tentative title). This film will shoot in Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan. The female lead has already been confirmed to be Zhang Ziyi. He said that this film has been in preparation for three months. Originally it was to start production in August, but because the approval process it could not start work. Ziyi has been waiting for them, for which they have been very grateful. In addition, Li Bingbing was on the guest list as well, but because she was working on the foreign film RESIDENT EVIL V in Canada she could not attend.

[2011.09.03] VIVIAN HSU IS CONCERNED ABOUT BEING CUT

On the second day of the 68th Venice Film Festival, one of the three Chinese language films in competition, SEEDIQ BALE, took center stage. Producer John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) without any hesitation gave the film 99.5 points and complimented director Wei Te-Sheng. "He has broken through the Chinese film border and achieved world film standard."

The NT$700 million epic production SEEDIQ BALE two days ago held a press conference in Venice. The foreign media was deeply interested in the Taiwan aboriginal history. Their responses were the most overwhelming during the male lead's folk song performance and the beheading of Japanese soldiers.

A reporter asked about the historical issue of Japan ruled Taiwan. Wei Te-Sheng explained, "This makes grasping love and hate in it very difficult. It's like if you give me a beautiful piece of glass bead but ruining the ground on my home."

The media of course asked about the film "nationality" issue because the Venice Film Festival classified SEEDQI as Taiwan, China production and upset the people of Taiwan. Wei Te-Sheng responded, "With many things as long as you just don't look, don't think but know where the goal is, then you just head toward that goal and wouldn't get lost."

Due to its film length, Wei Te-Sheng could only cut SEEDIQ into a 150 minute festival version. It is quite different from the latter two part release in Taiwan. Many plot lines were removed. He bowed to the cast on hand in apology. One of the lead actresses Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen) said, "He has already apologized to me six times." Earlier after the media screening ended, she could not wait to ask reporters. "Was my (role) still there? Was it cut?" When she found out the answer, she could not help but laugh and said, "Being able to participate in a Wei Te-Sheng film, I am already very lucky."

Successfully breaking into Hollywood, Ng Yu Sum also sang Director Wei's high praise. "I thank Wei Te-Sheng for giving me this chance, for me to participate in this film's producer job and learned about a piece of history that I overlooked." He continued to beat his own drum, "SEEDIQ not only wrote a great epic but at the same time also expressed a very high ethics and human dignity."

The Ann Hui On Wa directed, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Deanie Ip Tak Han starred A SIMPLE LIFE (TOH JEH) will be the only Hong Kong film to compete in the 68th Venice Film Festival in September. Hui On Wa excitedly that her dream of many years has finally come truth. Ip Tak Han was overjoyed to receive the good news as she excitedly said, "That's very fortunate, this is the result of the entire team's group effort. Actually I am unfamiliar with foreign film festivals and only have a deeper impression of the Oscars. This time my film will be able to go overseas for the first time, it is very rare for even more people to learn about Hong Kong film. I once read a Time magazine report online that the top ten Eastern films are all action films. In the eyes of foreigners Chinese films seem to only be martial art or action films. Lau Tak Wa's DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME (DIK YUN KIT ji TUNG TIN DAI GOK) also competed. Wa Jai was excited about attending the Venice Film Festival for a second year. "Working with Sister Deanie is rare enough, now we can even hold hands and walk the red carpet. Of course I am happy. I again create another memorable experience with Sister Deanie in my life. At the same time I am pleased to see Chinese film getting attention. Go! Hong Kong film!" Hui On Wa also excitedly said, "I waited for over ten years, now my dream is finally fulfilled. I am the happiest that as soon as Venice chair Marco Muller saw the film he immediately invited it to the festival. I didn't have to wait, ha! It's truly too great. BEGINNING OF THE GREAT REVIVAL will open in Hong Kong on June 23. The film aside from its numerous Best Actor class, acting school handsome actor and beautiful actresses also had many directors and actors of substance in support. They included director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), Wang Leehom and Deng Chao.

Ng Yu Sum in the film played the late Qing Dynasty celebrity Lin Sen. With glasses, a long beard and clothing for the cultured, he looked serious and kind. Although his character did not appear on the screen for too long, he occupied an important position in the end of the film. Ng Yu Sum said, "I appreciate very much for the two directors' admiration, for me to be able to play a role in the film. In the past I have been a director, only I yelled 'roll' and 'cut'. Thus during the shoot when I delivered the lines and heard the two directors say 'roll' and 'cut', I really wasn't used to it. After being an actor, I understood more the difficulty of actors handling characters. It will be helpful to my directing work."

Wang Leehom in the film played progressive student Luo Jialun. In the film although he wore the same Beijing University uniform as other students, his look stood out. Wang Leehom was very excited to be able to take part in this film and said, "My character is a hot blooded youth, I

am a hot blooded person too. I am willing to make different attempts. Thus the character and I have something in common." Deng Chao in the film played Sichuan youth Chen Yi. In order to play the role well, he practiced the Sichuan dialect despite being from Jiangxi.

The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Zhang Ziyi starred film LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI) two nights ago held a charity premiere at Admiralty. Lead actress Zhang Ziyi did not attend. Before the premiere, Sing Sing first attended an AIDS event. Because the movie was about AIDS patients, the film worked with the China AIDS Initiative Hong Kong chapter. Sing Sing in support of the event wore a red ribbon on his chest.

Sing Sing shared with guests the tragedy of AIDS patient discrimination. Because he played an AIDS patient in the film, he deeply felt it. During the shoot he cried many times as well. He said, "You can be born with AIDS, babies can catch it in the womb. In this production several real patients worked with us. We not only made a movie but also a documentary about how the patients lived with us." Sing Sing said that during the shoot he constantly played with an child with AIDS, but he would not be infected.

Why was lead actor Zhang Ziyi absent? He said that she was promoting in Singapore. He said, "Actually it's no big deal. This time we have nine promotional stops, I am only going to three. The most important is bringing attention to this event." He also said that for this film he spent three months to learn Shunde dialect and understand patient symptoms because he had to play from getting sick, being sick to passing away. He said, "I have read many film reviews. Even my idol John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) praised me, I am very happy." Has his rumored girlfriend Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam) seen the film? He said that she has not. With almost 200 actors from three lands on both sides of the straits, the Emperor Motion Picture BEGINNING OF THE GREAT REVIVAL two nights ago held its premiere at the Beijing Olympic Center. Actors Chow Yun Fat, Liu Ye, Fan Bingbing and others dressed up for the occasion. Over ten actors were cut from the film, among them Tang Wei's cut caught the most attention. Director Huang Jianxin honestly said that right now there were too many rumors and he did not want to explain. Ultimately the scenes were cut mainly in consideration of the film's completeness, the audience's viewing requirements and habits.

Fat Gor brought Fat Soh Jasmine Tan to Beijing to attend the premiere. Also in attendances were Liu Ye, Fan Bingbing, John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), Michelle Ye (Yip Shuen) and others. Fat Gor played Yuan Shikai in the film and had many scenes with Zhao Benshan who played Duan Qirui and Feng Gong who played Feng Guozhang. He said on the set he constantly had to hold back laughter in front of Zhao Benshan and Feng Gong because when their backs faced the cameras they would try to make him laugh. This experience also his most memorable from the shoot.

Due to all the stars, some inevitably were cut from the film. According to director Huang Jianxin, over ten actors' scenes were cut. Many were top actors but he did not want to reveal who. Currently the media only knew Tang Wei was one of them. Huang Jianxin stated, "Tang Wei played Tao Yi whose role originally was not much. For some reason, there have been too many rumors. I don't want to explain them right now. Ultimately when the cuts were made, the primary consideration was the film's completeness and the audience's demand and habit. I express my deepest apologies to actors whose scenes were cut."

Reportedly due to BEGINNING's June release, TRANSFORMERS DARK OF THE MOON had to postpone its release to the end of July. Huang Jianxin said that BEGINNING's release date was set in December and had nothing to do with import film schedules.

Fan Bingbing said that she felt a lot of pressure from working with so many experienced actors. When asked whether Ng Yu Sum's scene remained, director Han Sanping stated, "It's still there." Liu Ye at a Shanghai press conference yesterday revealed that in order to bring the

character to life, he had late night snacks to gain 10 pounds and joked that salary was at a daily rate. Since his role was more important, he should make more than co-star Fat Gor.

The Emperor Motion Picture distribution FOUNDING OF A PARTY will be released nationwide in mid June and late June in Hong Kong. Yesterday a trailer and official site launch press conference was held in Beijing. Director Huang Jianxin, Feng Yuanzheng who played Chen Duxiu, Li Chen who played Zhang Guotao and Li Qin who played Yang Yang Kaihui attended.

In the poster, the Liu Ye played Mao Zedong and Chen Kun played Zhou Enlai, and the Chow Yun Fat played Yuan Shikai and Andy Lau Tak Wa played Cai E held their own as two generations of handsome idols became the center of attention.

Huang Jianxin at the press conference also first talked about editing. FOUNDING OF A PARTY's 178 actors were more than FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC. Due to too much film content and too many characters, several actors' appearances had to be cut. [2011.04.26] JOHN WOO PREPARED FOR CHINESE TITANIC

John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) earlier revealed at a Beijing forum that he will make a war film TAI PING LUN (originally titled 1949) about the famous "Chinese Titanic" Taiping. "The Taiping Incident" occurred in January 1949, the Taiping cross strait steamer due to exceeding maximum capacity and the lack of navigational lights while traveling at night sunk. Nearly 1,000 of the rich and the famous died. The incident had enormous effect back then. Coincidentally, the owner of the Taiping was the current top Taiwan host Kevin Tsai Kang-yung's father.

After the sinking of the Taiping, the Shanghai court sentenced the steamer company to make compensations. However due to the war, Shanghai's soon liberation, the astronomical compensation figure, and the immediate closing of the Taiping's insurance company, the steamer company had to make the compensation on its own. Finally the company closed. Its two remaining steamers were chained up in the Kaohsiung harbor and finally were left to completely rust and rot. The matter also ended without any resolution. Tsai Kang-yung recalled how creditors went after his father and made his father finally becoming a lawyer who "sympathized with the employer".

TAI was prepared for production two to three years ago and confirmed to star Song Hye-Kyo and Chang Chen, but later due to copyright issues, financing falling through and other reasons it was postponed. Since the project was brought up again, Ng Yu Sum was rumored to continue negotiation with Song Hye-Kyo and Chang Chen. Ng Yu Sum admitted, "They indeed are two actors in THE TAIPING." As for FLYING TIGERS, which Ng Yu Sum has prepared for years, it has not been abandoned due to THE TAIPING. FLYING will start work in 2012 and Liu Ye has already been confirmed.

Ng Yu Sum said that reliance on computer special effects "raised lazy" directors and that Mainland film subject rush has become the trend. He said, "Everyone flocks to the same film subject, at the same time there are four Flying Tigers, three Guan Yunchang and three Sun Wukong. How much money and manpower do they take? If several movies have similar stories, the audience would feel they are copying each other. In the end no one wins." He said that in Hollywood if a subject clash occurs, someone would drop out and provide their experience to the people who are working on the film. They help and include each other.

Ng Yu Sum criticized the Mainland film industry for not being united. Earlier when he made RED CLIFF many waited to see if his movie would die. Thus when his movie went over budget, he would rather put in his own money to keep it going.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, Beijing city government organized 1st Beijing International Film Festival two nights ago held a grand opening ceremony at the National Grand Theater. Aside from the usual stars, the event also invited over 20 famous film festival chairs to be the opening ceremony guests in Beijing. Media Asia film boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok led a Hong Kong representative group and walked the red carpet with Media Asia representatives Leon Lai Ming and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa.

Lai Ming is currently working on his new film WHITE VENGEANCE in Hengdian and made the trip for the opening ceremony before returning to continue the shoot. Lai Ming said that the rising temperature made the shoot very tough, in particular his look had a face full of hair and very heavy costume. Thus it was rather tough. When asked about the Mainland film market that was growing stronger by the day, he said that China's film market was very large. Its direction internationally did not just start today. Last year with LOVE IN A PUFF (JI MING YU CHUNG GIU) Chin Wa won many awards. Two nights ago she ran into director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) as soon as she arrived. She immediately asked for a photo together because she has always admired Director Ng. She would like to work with him. She said, "My deepest impression the director shooting Fat Gor (Chow Yun Fat)'s heroic character with two guns. I really hope to have a chance to such a cool character." As for the progress of the LOVE IN A PUFF sequel, she said that for now it will start production in mid July. In addition she has been busy with preparation for her Macao concert Saturday. Thus she could only look at the Peking duck. "I really want to eat Peking duck, but the schedule is too rushed. With the concert on the way I can only watch myself for my voice and to be in the best condition." She also said that this time she added three songs for the Macao audience so she hoped that they would be on time.

Stephen Fung Tak Lun and Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho) recently formed the production company Diversion Pictures. After the Beijing press conference, yesterday they in Hong Kong held a contract signing ceremony with Huayi Brothers chief Wong Zhonglei to officially announce Huayi Brothers' investment in Diversion and collaboration on a series of film projects. Diversion first will make the film TAI CHI, then YING HUNG BOON SIK. Fung Tak Lun said that he purchased the right to remake the 1967 Lung Kong directed STORY OF A DISCHARGED PRISONER (YING HUNG BOON SIK) long ago. He and Ng Yin Cho will produce and they will look for a suitable director. Yesterday the event also aired John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s congratulatory video. Ng Yu Sum praised them as talents and looked forward to their YING HUNG BOON SIK.

Fung Tak Lun and Ng Yin Cho are good friends and now bosses, are they worried that they would argue? Ng Yin Cho joked that if they would, they would fight and whoever won would be in charge. Fung Tak Lun joked, "Then I should be in charge." Fung Tak Lun said that he and Ng Yin Cho always had the idea of creating a production company and talked about it for several years. [2011.03.04] WEI TE-SHENG MIRACULOUSLY COMPLETES SEEDIQ BALE

CAPE NO. 7 director Wei Te-Sheng invested 12 years and over NT$700 million into the record breaking Taiwan film industry heroic epic film SEEDIQ BALE with famous directors John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) as its producer and Ang Lee as its consultant will open September 9 and 30 in two parts in Taiwan and October and November in Hong Kong.

SEEDIQ's story will mainly be about the "Wushe Incident" 81 years ago when Taiwan natives rose up against Japan's colonial rule. As early as 12 years ago, Hsiao Wei spent all over his life saving of NT$2.5 million to make a five minute trailer to raise financing. Although he

was made fun of in the Taiwan film industry as "The world's silliest person", but his "silliness" touched Ng Yu Sum and Ang Lee to lend a hand. For this film, Hsiao Wei invested all his profit for CAPE NO. 7 and the government cash prize into SEEDIQ. During the preparation he ran into a flood that ruined the set and sent the cost soaring from the initial NT$ 200 million to 500 million. For awhile due to salary issue the production halted. Yet his determination not only touched industrialists but also Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun), Vivian Hsu (Tsui Yeuk Suen) and others all loaned money to the cause. Hsiao Wei described the four month long shoot as "everyday feels like standing on the edge of a cliff, but ultimately a miracle appeared."

This time the production team had over 400 people from Taiwan, Japan and Korea, thus communication taught Hsiao Wei a lesson; shooting in dangerous locations like steep hills and roaring rapids, landslides and scratches from sharp rocks became common place. Poisonous plants made itching unbearable. Sometimes workers broke their limbs, wild boars bit people, almost no one was spared from injury or illness. Hsiao Wei also required stitches after cutting his calf from a fall. The poor environment was beyond anyone's imagination. No wonder he described "filmmaking is war". However his passion and determination touched everyone.

As the film wrapped, another nightmare appeared. The original financing either has not appeared or changed. Luckily Central Motion Pictures chair T. C. Guo (Terry Guo's brother) held a press conference to announce a NT$ 350 million investment for the film to reach all of its

financing. As the dream was near completion, Hsiao Wei sentimentally said, "This film absolutely will not make Chinese viewers lose face, because we are good enough, because we are proud enough!" Jiang Wen was very happy about LET THE BULLETS FLY's six nomination and will definitely fight for time to attend the award show. REIGN OF ASSASSINS' Best Actress nominee Michelle (Yeung Chi King) was busy at work in Paris. After receiving the good news she joked that she wanted to celebrate with the boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok. She was even happier to learn about other nominations. She particularly thanked producer John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), director Su Chao-Bin and executive producer Terence Chang (Cheung Ka Chun). The John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) produced, Patrick Lam Pak Kin directed youth comedy BREAKING THE WAVES two nights ago held an event at the Beijing Media University. One of the lead actresses Joe Chen Qiao-En appeared in person to interact with students and instructors. In the film she had many romantic scenes with Huang Xiaoming. She not only answered the numerous romantic questions but also wished well for her friend Barbie Hsu (Tsui Hei Woon)'s lightning fast wedding. Chen Qian-En said that she and Big S were close. Big S had a very strong personality and was certain about what she did before doing so. When asked about her own love life, she said that she just started work on a film and everything was buried in work.

In the film, Chen Qiao-En not only played an university dragon boat coach but also a famous national rowing champion. Yet to play an athlete well was not easy for the petite her. She complained, "This is my first film, I definitely have to give my all to perform well. In order to

look more like an athlete, I have been training in the gym almost everyday. Some online compliments say my muscles are developed, then I think I have done that. John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s wuxia film REIGN OF ASSASSINS (GIM YU) two nights ago began its promotion in Singapore. Only producer Ng Yu Sum, director Su Chao-Bin and lead actress Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi Kng) remained. Michelle sighed that this promotion did not have male lead Jung Woo-Sung's support, which took some getting used to because in the past Beijing and Hong Kong promotions Jung Woo-Sung would be by her side and take care of her like a gentleman would.

Many actors in Hong Kong or Hollywood would like to work with John Woo (Ng Yu Sum). He himself has actors who he would like to work with, like Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) who he has already wanted to work with over a decade ago. However despite both went from Hong Kong to Hollywood and often saw each other in Hollywood, they never worked with each other. However this time as a producer for the wuxia film REIGN OF ASSASSINS (GIM YU), he successfully landed Michelle, Korean hunk Jung Woo-Sung, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Big S (Barbie Hsu) and others to create a new generation wuxia epic. He not only fulfilled his dream but also hoped for the audience to experience how an action film could fight with real emotions.

In John's eyes, Michelle was someone who was bold, caring and magnanimous. He always admired this woman of real emotions. After working together for the first time, John still had nothing but praise for Michelle. Because she personally performed 90% of her stunts, she opened his eyes. She was very similar to her character in the film. Both bravely gave for love and both were tough but tender. John even deliberately chose Korean hunk Jung Woo-Sung to team with Michelle. Because the male lead was an ordinary country man, if a big star who everyone recognized played him he would not be convincing. John also revealed that Jung Woo-Sung in order to overcome the language barrier put into a lot of hard work, which made him respect him very much.

Choosing producing instead directing, John gave the important duty to SILK's Taiwan director Su Chao-Bin. John praised the writer/director for his new style wuxia film. Su Chao-Bin asked Yue Man Lok to play an assassin because Lok Jai caught his eye in INVISIBLE TARGET (NAM YI BOON SIK). He thought Lok Jai was very vicious in his fights. John also complimented Lok Jai's performance as a pleasant surprise for him.

Leads Jung Woo-Sung and Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) continued to play a sweet couple. Not only did they often hold hands, Jung Woo-Sung was even more attentive when Michelle ascended to and descended from the stage. He lightly held her hand and put his arm around her shoulder. During the confetti cannon he even helped Michelle, they were much sweeter than a real couple.

In the film, Jung Woo-Sung carried Michelle many times. The host asked them to demonstrate, Michelle joked that she was very heavy. Jung Woo-Sung said, "As long as I am carrying Michelle, I am willing to go anywhere." The host asked him what the difference was between Korean and Hong Kong girls. The John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) produced REIGN OF ASSASSINS (GIM YU) will soon open in Hong Kong. The segment that honored Ng Yu Sum was the most emotional, as the event displayed footage of his Venice award acceptance but suddenly added his daughter Angeles Woo (Ng Fei Ha)'s thoughts about his award. Ng Yu Sum broke down after seeing the words that her daughter said for him. He, director Su Chih-Pin and actors Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), Jung Woo-Sung, Barbie Hsu (Tsui Hei Woon), Shawn Yue Man Lok, Wang Xueqi, Paw Hee Ching, Pace Wu (Ng Pui Chi), Calvin Li (Lee Chong Hong) and Leon Dai Lap Yun attended. The host asked Jung Woo-Sung and Yeung Chi King to reprise their wedding proposal scene. In the film Yeung Chi King asked Jung Woo-Sung if he was willing to marry her. Although they were buddies, reprising the scene in public was still embarrassing. Jung Woo-Sung immediately helped her and kept her from proposing. Before she was able to respond, he already continuously repeated, "What did you say?" and pretended to have reprised the scene.

Ng Yu Sum was asked if he switched faces who he would switch with. He humorously said that he would like to become Jung Woo-Sung because in childhood he has always wanted to become an actor but he did not grow tall. As long as he had Jung Woo-Sung's looks he definitely would become a top actor. Jung Woo-Sung said, "Thank you Director." Ng Pui Chi wore four inch high heels, which made the already tall her even taller. Yue Man Lok often stood on the tips of his toes to keep from being shorter than her.
