Movie Box Review

The BAFTA's (Orange British Academy Film Awards) nominations were announced today and it's not a huge surprize to see The King's Speech take a major lead with 14 nominations which when you look at it the film is nominated in every category it seems like it would qualify for. I'm thinking Colin Firth is a lock for leading actor, but with so many other prominent films this year I think it's too early to say more than that. Other big set of noms goes to Black Swan with 12, Inception with 9 and both 127 Hours & True Grit with 8 noms each.

I think the biggest surprize for me was seeing Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit for Leading Actress - which she was, and it's deserved, but I really thought we'd see her nominated (and winning) in supporting. This totally is going to throw off my predictions!

A fair number of interesting crossover titles over slightly unexpected categories including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo up for 3 awards including Film Not In the English Language (not surprizing), Lead Actress Noomi Rapace (well-deserved) and Adapted Screenplay (unexpected but very well-deserved). Also How to Train Your Dragon is up for 2 awards included Animated (not surprizing) and Original Music (more surprizing) and also a double-nom for Andrew Garfield up for Supporting Actor for The Social Network (which only got 4 noms) and also Orange Wednesdays Rising Star. In fact, the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star (which is voted by the public) is one category where I'm cheering everyone on and all of the actors on the list I consider myself a big cheerleader for and they are: Gemma Arterton (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Clash of the Titans (2010), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Tamara Drewe), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network & Never Let Me Go, Boy A and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), Tom Hardy (Inception, Bronson and Star Trek: Nemesis), Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy, Kick-Ass) and Emma Stone (Easy A, Paper Man)- and many of them are on my 2010 Ones to Watch list. Oh yeah, me & the BAFTA's have our eyes on the same set of fabulous folks.

Twilight fever still pretty strong winning with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse winning Favourite Movie and Favorite Drama Movie, and Kristen Stewart did win for Favorite Movie Actress and the team all together won Favorite On Screen Team (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner). But the love got to be spread around as Johnny Depp won Favorite Movie Actor over Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and Favorite Movie Star Under 25 went to Zac Efron over Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Vanessa Hudgens.

I was really hoping that Favorite Horror Movie would go to The Last Exorcism but it went to the likely younger crowd pleasure A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). That was a strong category with year as it also included The Crazies, Let Me In and Resident Evil: Afterlife.

It's so odd to write Favorite without the u. I'm a fan of the Favourite, as is my spellchecker - but alas, the official categories titles have no u, so I'm leaving them out to be all consistent like.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Golden Globe nominations were announced yesterday and for awards centric folk this is one of the lists that's a great precursor screening list to get in for possible Oscar nominations. I've come to enjoy the Globes more and more over the years as with having both Drama and Comedy/Musical categories for film, actor & actress it gives us more films to explore and enjoy. The heavy hitter this year is The King's Speech which has 7 nominees and I really enjoyed that one, but next up we have The Fighter and The Social Network both with 6. I'm a little surprized at The Fighter with that many noms, I guess it will be on my to-see list now. I wonder how The Social Network will do, in general people are really loving it but I really didn't connect to it. Add Black Swan & Inception at 4 nominations, again both I didn't connect to so I'm wondering if I'm going to be a bit of a grump this award season. The Kids Are All Right also chimes in with 4 noms, and in the 3 nomination club we have 127 Hours, Alice in Wonderland and the very fun Burlesque.

I did do a fair number of happy dances when reading the nominations including I Am Love (Italy) nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, it's shaping up to be my favourite film of the year. It was also great to see Jacki Weaver nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture in in Animal Kingdom. Score nominees that I'm thrilled to see include A.R. Rahman for 127 Hours, Alexandre Desplat for The King's Speech and Hans Zimmer for Inception. I'm a big fan of all of those guys. And it's freaking awesome that "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" Music & Lryics by Diane Warren from Burlesque was nominated, it's a very powerful song.

Few new-ish titles to me on this list include Blue Valentine which I just saw the trailer for last week and looks compelling and also have to see if it's possible to see Best Foreign Language Film nominations The Edge (Russia) and In a Better World (Denmark), hopefully we'll see those in Toronto at some point. And with Jeremy Renner nominated for The Town as supporting actor, that might just tip me to seeing that one as well.

Golden Globe nominations were announced yesterday and for awards centric folk this is one of the lists that's a great precursor screening list to get in for possible Oscar nominations. I've come to enjoy the Globes more and more over the years as with having both Drama and Comedy/Musical categories for film, actor & actress it gives us more films to explore and enjoy. The heavy hitter this year is The King's Speech which has 7 nominees and I really enjoyed that one, but next up we have The Fighter and The Social Network both with 6. I'm a little surprized at The Fighter with that many noms, I guess it will be on my to-see list now. I wonder how The Social Network will do, in general people are really loving it but I really didn't connect to it. Add Black Swan & Inception at 4 nominations, again both I didn't connect to so I'm wondering if I'm going to be a bit of a grump this award season. The Kids Are All Right also chimes in with 4 noms, and in the 3 nomination club we have 127 Hours, Alice in Wonderland and the very fun Burlesque.

I did do a fair number of happy dances when reading the nominations including I Am Love (Italy) nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, it's shaping up to be my favourite film of the year. It was also great to see Jacki Weaver nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture in in Animal Kingdom. Score nominees that I'm thrilled to see include A.R. Rahman for 127 Hours, Alexandre Desplat for The King's Speech and Hans Zimmer for Inception. I'm a big fan of all of those guys. And it's freaking awesome that "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" Music & Lryics by Diane Warren from Burlesque was nominated, it's a very powerful song.

Few new-ish titles to me on this list include Blue Valentine which I just saw the trailer for last week and looks compelling and also have to see if it's possible to see Best Foreign Language Film nominations The Edge (Russia) and In a Better World (Denmark), hopefully we'll see those in Toronto at some point. And with Jeremy Renner nominated for The Town as supporting actor, that might just tip me to seeing that one as well.

26th Annual Spirit Awards Nominations for film in 2010 have been announced, and I always look forward to seeing this list, as year after year I know more of the films but there are always some gems to discover among the nominees. Leading the race this year is Winter’s Bone with 7 nominations including best feature, director, and very well deserved Best Female Lead nomination for Jennifer Lawrence and Best Supporting Male to John Hawkes. Winter's Bone is a truly chilling film and I just knew it would make a big awards splash this year, it's on DVD so you can certainly check it out. Also heading the game of big time noms is The Kids Are All Right with 5 nominations including film, directing and Best Female Lead for Annette Bening. Then Black Swan, Greenberg and Rabbit Hole come in with 4 nominations each and 127 Hours, Jacks Goes Boating and Tiny Furniture with 3 nominations each . First I've heard of both Rabbit Hole & Tiny Furniture - seem like it's time to find out more about them!

Some interesting and odd things I found with the nominations were things like Never Let Me Go getting 1 nomination for just the Cinematography (only 1!), or The Kings Speech only for Foreign. But loved seeing the Irish film Kisses is also up for Foreign, and it's so accent heavy it almost feels like Foreign Language, but that is one of the reasons I loved it. I was also thrilled to see Au Revoir Taipei up for Piaget Producers Award and Ashley Bell be recognized with a Best Supporting Female nomination for The Last Exorcism, I interviewed her earlier this year and she is absolutely lovely (read or listen to the interview here). I also love the spirit of the Spirit Awards, how they shine a light on films and the people who make them that can be highly under seen. If you are a fan of independent films & filmmakers - this nominations list is one to easily add to your must see list.

26th Annual Spirit Awards Nominations for film in 2010 have been announced, and I always look forward to seeing this list, as year after year I know more of the films but there are always some gems to discover among the nominees. Leading the race this year is Winter’s Bone with 7 nominations including best feature, director, and very well deserved Best Female Lead nomination for Jennifer Lawrence and Best Supporting Male to John Hawkes. Winter's Bone is a truly chilling film and I just knew it would make a big awards splash this year, it's on DVD so you can certainly check it out. Also heading the game of big time noms is The Kids Are All Right with 5 nominations including film, directing and Best Female Lead for Annette Bening. Then Black Swan, Greenberg and Rabbit Hole come in with 4 nominations each and 127 Hours, Jacks Goes Boating and Tiny Furniture with 3 nominations each . First I've heard of both Rabbit Hole & Tiny Furniture - seem like it's time to find out more about them!

Some interesting and odd things I found with the nominations were things like Never Let Me Go getting 1 nomination for just the Cinematography (only 1!), or The Kings Speech only for Foreign. But loved seeing the Irish film Kisses is also up for Foreign, and it's so accent heavy it almost feels like Foreign Language, but that is one of the reasons I loved it. I was also thrilled to see Au Revoir Taipei up for Piaget Producers Award and Ashley Bell be recognized with a Best Supporting Female nomination for The Last Exorcism, I interviewed her earlier this year and she is absolutely lovely (read or listen to the interview here). I also love the spirit of the Spirit Awards, how they shine a light on films and the people who make them that can be highly under seen. If you are a fan of independent films & filmmakers - this nominations list is one to easily add to your must see list.

Earlier this week the results for the 2010 Scream Awards came out and it was interesting as they were broadcasted on Spike on Tuesday, but taped previously so the info on who won started to seep out bit by bit. But I know all is well as the Most Memorable Mutilation when to The Human Centipede (First Sequence), as it should be as that category could literally be founded by that particular film. I was also thrilled to see Breakout Performance - Male go to Tom Hardy for Inception becuase Tom Hardy is a phenomenal actor and I'm really looking forward to seeing more from him, and Inception certainly got him on a lot of different radars. There was a fair amount of love for Inception with it also winning Ultimate Scream, Best Science Fiction Movie, Best Science Fiction Actor (Leonardo Dicaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and best Fight Scene but surprzingly not Best Director that went to James Cameron for Avatar or Best Ensemble that went to Zombieland.

The one shoe in that was no surprize was Breakout Performance - Female going to Chloë Grace Moretz for Kick-Ass, everyone just *loved* her in that.

The Scream Awards were broadcast on October 19, 2010.

The Scream Awards honour the best in SciFi, Fantasy Comics & Horror. Kick-Ass leads the race with 17 nominations, followed by Inception at 15, Iron Man 2 at 13 and "True Blood" at 10. The awards honour both film and TV, so you get to vote for your faves of both the big and small screens such as "Lost", "Dexter" and "V" alongside District 9, Zombieland and Avatar.

I was happily surprized to see The Human Centipede get some well deserved nominations this year (mutilation and villain), especially as the foreign film category is gone and now we have a 3D category. Another big surprize was see a (well-deserved) nomination for Charlotte Gainsbourg in Antichrist, as Best Horror Actress. Two great categories this year are the breakout performance, both male & female have tons of great actors in there from Tom Hardy to Andrew Garfield to Chloë Grace Moretz. I was surprized to see Morena Baccarin in there for "V", being a fan of hers from back in the Firefly days, although there is no doubt she's one of the best things about the new visitors.

The awards are a part of Spike TV which isn't a station I usually watch, but I've been thinking a lot about genre recently and it's interesting to see the films and TV shows section off into the different categories. Here's a selection of the break downs:

Fantasy Nominations include: Kick-Ass, Alice in Wonderland and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
Science Fiction Nominations include: Inception, Iron Man 2, Avatar, "Lost" an District 9
Horror Nominations include: "True Blood", Zombieland, Shutter Island and "Dexter"

It's interesting, I wouldn't have though Kick-Ass and Iron Man 2 would be in separate categories, but they are and it does make it's own kind of sense and they do face off in categories like Best Superhero. Interesting, thinking of Kick-Ass as fantasy actually, makes a lot of sense.

Due to the nature of the nomination categories at times being very descriptive and therefore a little spoilery (Fight Scene, Most Memorable Mutilation & Cameo), I've noted the film/TV series that's in the running and provided a link if you want to click through to see the specifics. You can vote daily for your faves, so don't miss out on having your say!
