Co-Productions Drag Hong Kong Films Down

The Giddens Ko directed, Michelle Chen, Ko Chen-Tung starred Taiwan film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE broke Stephen Chow Sing Chi's KUNG FU HUSTLE HK$61.27 million highest grossing Chinese film Hong Kong box office record with a total box office of 61,801,081 and left "Eastern Hollywood" Hong Kong film industry in shame.  Will Hong Kong film be able to fend off the competition and regain the box office championship?  Let's keep our eyes open and see.

John Chong Sees Sing Yeh As Favorite To Break YOU Record

In 2012 Hong Kong film market will have many giant production releases, including the Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred THE MONKEY KING (DAI LAU TIN GUNG), Jackie Chan's CHINESE ZODIAC (SUP YI SUN CHIU), Andy Lau Tak Wa and Lin Chiling's DWELLING IN THE FUCHUN MOUNTAINS, and Stephen Chow Sing Chi's NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY (SAI YAU GEI ji CHUI MOR OI JUEN).  Sing fans have been starved for four years so his new film will have hope to regain the glory of Hong Kong.  Media Asia vice chair John Chong Ching favors the idea, but Derek Yee Tung Sing and Universe Entertainment company boss Daneil Lam Siu Ming disagree.  They deeply feel that Hong Kong film will have difficulty with creating another miracle locally.  Looking north to China gives Hong Kong film professionals a new direction, but when they accommodate Mainland viewer tastes Hong Kong audience's "co-production" resistance becomes a burden.  Hong Kong film is dying, you know?

Daneil Lam Is Less Optimistic About Stephen Chow

Many, including Giddens Ko, hope Chow Sing Chi's new film NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY will break YOU's record.  Chong Ching feels it will have a chance.  "Sing Yeh is so talented, with all the starving Sing fans the box office will have certain motivation."

Derek Yee: Non Co-Production Has Financing Difficulties

Lam Siu Ming does not feel that Chow Sing Chi's CHINESE ODYSSEY will be able to break YOU's record.  "Sing Yeh's last film CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO) struggled to pass 50 million at the box office.  Actually this isn't Chow Sing Chi's problem, but the overall market's problem.  This is the general trend, everyone have to 'co-productions'.  Hong Kong viewers want to see Hong Kong films, but don't want to see any 'co-production'.  Yet now basically everything is 'co-production'.  Without co-production movies don't have funding.  Film ultimately is a merchandise, if you make a Hong Kong film with a 10 million budget you can't even hire actors.  Now actors are used to making 'Yun Jai' (RMB), how can they be willing to accept 2 million in salary?  If you don't approach them, plenty of directors in the Mainland would; you can't make movies that cost more than 50 million either, with only the Hong Kong market it is impossible.  You can't go back.  Ultimately no one is willing to invest in a purely Hong Kong film, this is a problem of the chicken and the egg!  Even Chow Sing Chi has to make 'co-productions'.  CJ7 was a co-production, Universe this year will make a few movies, all of which will be 'co-productions'."

Yee Tung Sing agrees with Lam Siu Ming, "co-production" is at fault for Hong Kong film market's fall.  "'Co-productions' have subject restrictions, many subjects can't be made and movies can't speak freely.  The results often lack power and become terrible to watch.  Helplessly non 'co-productions' have difficulties with financing.  If you spend 10 million on a purely Hong Kong film, it will be very hard to make and won't be attractive.  I want to make PROTEGE (MOON TOH) sequel and ONE NITE IN MONGKOK (WONG GOK HAK YEH) continuation, but when the subjects get to the Mainland market I don't want to accommodate the Mainland market and change the concept and certain plots."  He feels that the world goes round and round, Taiwan film has fallen for 20 years and now finally has shaken itself off.  Hong Kong films look north and accommodating the Mainland market has become an inevitable fact.  Because the Mainland population the box office return is strong.  Last year the box office reached 13 billion yuan RMB, naturally it has more investors as funding floods in; he believes after a few battles the film industry will look completely different.

Although Chow Sing Chi's NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY is a 'co-production', everyone still is waiting for Hong Kong film to return to glory.  The film costs over 100 million yuan and finally has completed production after more than three months.  Currently it is conducting massive post production special effect production in Korea.  It should be able to be released this year.

Media Asia Invades the Mainland

Chong Ching feels that YOU was a coincidence, only a movie that is suitable for young people.  He also believes that Giddens Ko will not deliberately make a movie to break a record.  "If he deliberately makes a movie to break YOU's box office, the movie may not be good.  Thus Media Asia's future big films first have to be good movies.  Future movies will still target the Mainland market, including the 100 million Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man starred BLIND DETECTIVE (MAN TAM), Lin Chiling and Lau Tak Wa starred DWELLING ON THE FUCHUN MOUNTAINS.  Both are 'co-productions' because minding only the Hong Kong market truly is very dangerous."

Film in order to accommodate the Mainland market, will Hong Kong film have difficulty recovering its lost ground?  Chong Ching says, "This is a return rate issue, Mainland return rate is high.  In 2011 top ten Hong Kong film box office, 3 movies THE LOST BLADESMAN (GUAN WON CHEUNG), MR. AND MRS. INCREDIBLE (SUN KEI HUP NUI) and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (DUET MING GUM) only made 8 million.  With Hong Kong releases, anything less than 10 million at the box office is a failure."

courtesy of mingpao.com

Stephen Chow Sing Chi revealed that earlier he was busy with the film CHINESE ODYSSEY (SAI YAU GEI) in the Mainland and lost 15 or 16 pounds.  Currently he is working on the post production and the film
will be released in 2012.  Shu Qi is one of the actors.  He said that Shu Qi's character was created and would have some emotional scenes.

Many of Sing Yeh's films have been Hong Kong's highest grossing films.  What was his secret?  He said, "I rely of collective wisdom, normally I would think!"  As for the current film industry condition, he said, "It's great, the Mainland has a lot of space and a lot of market for you to create.  The future is optimistic."  As for future plans, Sing Yeh said that he will still mainly create and make movies that will be related to science fiction.

In addition, Sing Yeh's NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY reportedly would star Golden Horse Best Actor Huang Bo as Sun Wukong and Show Luo (Law Chi Cheung) as Piggy.

[2011.07.18] STEPHEN CHOW RETURNS TO

Show Luo

courtesy of on.cc

After 16 years, Stephen Chow Sing Chi returns to the CHINESE ODYSSEY film series and directs with Derek Kwok Chi Kin the new film NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY (SUN DAI WA SAI YAU ji CHUI MOR JUEN KEI), which now is secretly in production in Hengdian. However the casting is still up in the air.

Reportedly, Sing Yeh has been considering whether to play Sun Wukong or the Venerable Tang Monk's mentor. This time he originally wanted to play the Venerable Tang Monk's mentor but after investors numerous requests, he was more likely to play Sun Wukong. As for the Venerable Tang Monk's mentor, the role will fall into the hands of Anthony Wong Chau Sun.

Earlier Show Luo (Law Chi Cheung) was rumored to play Sun Wukong, but due to the news leak in the end he was eliminated. However the fact was the he will play an important role in the film. With his prankster personality, he will play Piggy with super ugly buck teeth and big belly look! However, fans can relax as this costume would vanish in a flash. Due to magic he would become an extremely cool Piggy!

Lead actress Shu Qi will join the team next month, but not as the White Bone Demon. She will play a heroine who has a relationship with Tang Monk Wen Zhang.

[2011.04.21] STEPHEN CHOW PASSES INSPECTION

courtesy of on.cc

In recent years, many film and television series had time travel as its subject. The Mainland inevitably had exactly the same work that promoted superstition, fate and reincarnation. Reportedly the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television earlier issued an notice that after February, nearly 30 time traveling projects were rejected. Yesterday rumors from the Mainland said that four great classics DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER, ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS, WATER MARGIN and JOURNEY TO THE WEST have become off limits to prevent film and television work to twist the subjects around, like turning the Red Chamber into a brothel and Piggy falling for the Veritable Monk Tang.

The new policy reminded people of the yet to start production Stephen Chow Sing Chi production CHINESE ODYSSEY. Star Overseas said that the film has already passed inspection so it should not be affected. The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred THE LOST BLADESMAN (GUAN WON CHEUNG) and the Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin starred time traveling film GIM HUP CHING YUEN (SWORDSMAN ROMANCE) all successfully caught the last train!

Yen Chi Tan said, "The four great classics contain Chinese culture that many Chinese people are familiar with. Turning them into movies can spread Chinese culture. I hope it's not true, otherwise it would be quite regrettable." Reportedly Raymond Wong Pak Ming was interested in making LAM CHUNG JUEN (LAM CHUNG LEGEND). Wong Pak Ming said, "LAM hasn't even been prepared, but I heard the subject restriction only applies to television series. It should have nothing to do with movies."

[2010.10.12] ETHAN JUAN DOES NOT MIND PLAYING A SUPPORT ROLE

Fala Chen

courtesy of takungpao.com

Popular Taiwan idol Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) yesterday attended a Calvin Klein specialty store opening ceremony with Fala Chen and others. Nominated for the Golden Horse Best Actor award, has Siu Tin already prepared what to wear that night? He said, "I still haven't thought about what to wear, but guys ultimately dress simply; like this time a black suit is fine." Reportedly he will work on Stephen Chow Sing Chi's new film CHINESE ODYSSEY (DAI WA SAI YAU), Siu Tin said that although he met with Sing Yeh, they did not have any complete collaboration opportunity. He also revealed that when he met with Sing Yeh he was very nervous. Finally he giggled in front of him for five minutes. He also said that he grew up watching Sing Yeh and Andy Lau Tak Wa on television, if he would have a chance to work with them of course he would be very happy. Sing Yeh has always been the lead in his movies, would he mind playing support? He said that he would be willing to play any role. He has played support before, which he thought instead had more opportunity to hone his skills. As for his comedic gene, he said that he could learn to act.

Karen Mok Man Wai yesterday attended a new concept store opening. Reportedly Stephen Chow Sing Chi would like to remake THE CHINESE ODYSSEY (SAU YAU GEI). Karen honestly said that she has heard about it but Sing Yeh has not contacted her yet. However she already felt very honored to be able to make THE CHINESE ODYSSEY. If Sing Yeh asked would she make it? Karen said, "I would be fine with anything he would ask me to play, being able to make the film again of course would be a honor. I believe no one would be a better white bone demon than me! However the remake content and characters would be different. (Would you recommend herself?) He has his ideas."

Speaking of Will Smith's son Jaden Smith as the Monkey King and whether he would be too forward, Karen thought it was a decent idea. The more expected the idea is the better it is, because the film itself was rather science fiction and Sing Yeh himself was rather forward. Karen continued, "Actually I visited the set when Jackie Chan and Jaden were working on THE KARATE KID, he was very polite and handsome. With his martial art background he shouldn't have any problem."

[2010.09.30] STEPHEN CHOW TALKS TO MAGGIE CHEUNG ABOUT CHINESE ODYSSEY

courtesy of on.cc

Stephen Chow Sing Chi's 1995 film series CHINESE ODYSSEY (SAI YAU GEI) was a critical and commercial hit. Its line "Love you 10,000 years" even became a classic line. Two years ago Sing Yeh reportedly would return to the Journey to the West subject.

Recently, Bingo Group executive Sing Yeh finally confirmed NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY (SUN DAI WA SAI YAU), which will start production in February. Sing Yeh has not confirmed whether he will perform. However this film has been so important to him that he continuously recruited big stars for the new film. In August Sing Yeh even personally went to Beijing to invite international Best Actress Maggie Cheung Man Yuk to play the Queen Mother. Because Sing Yeh was extremely sincere and Maggie wanted to work on a comedy, her chance of performing was rather high. Not only NEW, Sing Yeh also talked about tailoring a woman film for Maggie with a lot of potential.

He not only personally invited Maggie to perform but also asked Will Smith. Reportedly when Will Smith came to Hong Kong to promote I AM LEGEND, he met with Sing Yeh and also mentioned his CHINESE ODYSSEY project. In 2008, Sing Yeh met with Will Smith again when he went to the U.S. for the GREEN HORNET negotiation. He again invited he and his son Jaden to guest star together as he was interested in turning Jaden into the young Monkey King. As for why Old Sun would turn into a foreigner, Sing Yeh thought of 72 actors to play the Monkey King role simultaneously. Old Sun is able to make 72 transformations into men, women, seniors, children and even foreigners!

Derek Kwok Chi Kin will direct NEW CHINESE ODYSSEY. In order to make this film, Sing Yeh postponed KING OF COMEDY 2. Kwok Chi Kin said, "With big stars like them, Mr. Chow have to personally negotiate. I am waiting for his notification. However my initial cast list has Hollywood superstars and some big stars."

Reportedly the version will be a youth version, with Aarif Rahman (Lee Chi Ting) as the Tang Monk and Ethan Ruan (Yuen King Tin) as Sun Wukong the Monkey King. The film would also have characters like the White Bone Demon, Princess Iron Fan, Bull King and Sand Monk, who new comers from Mainland recruitment will play. Although Sing Yeh would only be a producer this time, he could express his opinions about the cast. He personally met with Yuen King Tin. Sing Yeh felt that Siu Tin had Sun Wukong's lively side so he was the most suitable to play the character. Sing Yeh would also guest starred as a transformed Sun Wukong. Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi has also been invited to guest star. Because it was a story about a young Tang Monk, the leads would be idol actors.

Despite China Film Group repeatedly suggested for Sing Yeh to play the Tang Monk role, he did not agree. Because if he starred, the film could not possibly be a youth version. In addition TAI CHI is almost ready for production, during which he would not have time to handle other film.
