The word is out - The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD gets a release date: Saturday March 20, 2010. It will be interesting to see the different deals and extra that will be on or included with the releases. The above picture is from an HMV in Toronto where you can pre-order the 2 Disc DVD for $19.99 if you put down a deposit of $10 and the bonus is a film cell with Jacob. Amazon.ca has a pre-order price guarantee which is pretty handy and what I tend to pick. It looks like they are just doing the 2 Disc Special Edition as opposed to Twilight which had several versions.

In terms on extras, Amazon.com indicates the following:
Audio commentary with Director Chris Weitz and Editor Peter Lamber
A riveting six-part documentary that takes you behind the scenes
Exclusive band rehearsal footage with Muse
Music videos from Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina, and Mute Math

I'm really hoping there will be a cast commentary and will keep my fingers crossed for one, although there is no word on that as of yet. There has been rumblings of extended and deleted scenes, so fingers crossed for those too!

Swords, Sandal and Spartacus
Latest review in the Sword & Sandal Marathon is the 1960 film version of Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas. I really enjoyed revisiting it and continue to have a lot of fun with this marathon. If Sword & Sandal Marathon and Spartacus are your gig too then we are both in for a treat with the upcoming "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" Miniseries starring Andy Whitefield, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Nick Tarabay, John Hannah and Lucy Lawless. The series premieres this Friday January 22, 2010 on Starz, but plays here in Canada starting Monday January 25, 2010 at 9pm EST on TMN. For times in your area, check your local listings. Well it was a fun weekend at the theatre with the release of the latest vampire film Daybreakers, which I headed out to see again after first seeing it at TIFF and I enjoyed it yet again this time getting to see it at the regular theatre and I highly recommend it for fans of vampire and/or action flicks. Daybreakers came it at #4 in the Canadian & North American box office for the Jan 8, 2010 weekend where the #2, 3, and 4 places all were very close to each other but Avatar still held strong as the number #1.

I ran across a great article by Richard Crouse over at Metro that not only taps into the current vampire film trends but also looks into vampire films of the past - several I've never heard of but I can't wait to see. Who can resist a disco Dracula? Or a Hammer/Shaw Bros collaboration? Seriously ... those go on the to see list, asap! Read the article here.

Switching from vamps to other fantasticalness, one of the films I'm still trying to figure out what it's all about (and hoping to include it in the Sword & Sandals marathon) is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief which is based on the Rick Riordan young adult novel based in Greek mythology. Images help to get a better sense and Geek Tyrant has posted several character posters for the film which you can see here. It's clear to see the influences of mythology and current day setting, but I still want to see more.

A film that has a big built in fan base is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and I hope we get a release date for this one soon! It's the latest from directed Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), is based on a comic book and stars Michael Cera as Scotto Pilgrim, whose challenge is to defeat the seven ex-boyfriends of his new girlfriend. Oddly, sounds more like a video game than a comic. Anyhow, I saw these pics over at Think Hero which are stills from the film and look pretty cool, but you can see those images and lots more about the film over at Edgar Wright's blog.

It looks like a big year ahead with many epic films from monsters to fantasy to one of my new favourite terms: sword & sandal films! Let's have a look, shall we?

Vampires, Werewolves & Monsters, Oh my!
Did you think I would start with any other sub-genre? Of course not. We start the year off right with the Jan 8, 2010 release of the Spierig brothers Daybreakers starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Isabel Lucan and Sam Neill in a world where vampires rule but their food supply is turning...sparse. More vamps with Let Me In (Jan 15, 2010 - revised release date: Oct 1, 2010), the UK/USA re-make of 2008 Swedish Vampire film Let the Right One In / Låt den rätte komma in starring Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloe Moretz ((500) Days of Summer) and I'm guessing this one will be pushed back as it's set for release in less than 2 weeks yet we've not even seen a trailer yet. Flipping from fearing the sun to the moon, we have the The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro set to release on February 12, 2010 and I'm very curious on this one as the two trailers were so drastically different in tone I have no clue what to expect. If you love both vamps and werewolves and are part of the Twi-crowd than you already know one of the biggest anticipated films of the year is The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third installment of the series hits theatres in a mid week release on Wednesday June 30, 2010. Last but not least is Beastly a re-telling of "Beauty and the Beast", set in New York and Alex Pettyfer (Stormbreaker), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) and hitting theatres July 30, 2010.

Fantasy
2010 has it's fair share of fantasy and the titles that I'm looking forward to start with teh March 5, 2010 release of Alice in Wonderland (2010) which pairs up director Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter onces again - more casting includes Mia Waskikowska, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Lee, Alan Rickman and Crispin Glover. Towards the end of the year we will see the third in the Narnia series with Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (December 10, 2010) - I enjoyed both first in the series already release and look forward to this one but I have to remember to read the book first! Last up in straight up fantasy is actually a bit of a stretch with M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender (July 2, 2010) based animated TV Show "Avatar" involving quests, powers and the elements. The film stars Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Nicola Peltz, Noah Ringer, Jessica Andres and Jackson Rathbone.

Fantastical / Religious
Strange to have not one but two religious centric fantastical films in one year, and even more strange is both are directed by Scott Stewart and starring Paul Bettany. Normally I'd call foul on overusing ideas or something but they both look freaking awesome. First up is Legion (January 22, 2010) where Paul Bettany stars as a fallen angel who comes to earth during a biblical apocolypse, and also stars Dennis Quaid, Lucas Black, Kevin Durand, Tyrese Gibson. Later in the year we have Priest (August 27, 2010) which is a vampire film based on a graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung starring Paul Bettany in the title role and also starting Cam Gigandet.

Ideas
Ideas & Concepts - oh no! Not... thinking! Thinking is good, no? Well that's up in the air when it comes to this flicks... first up is Creation starring Paul Bettany (oh my, it's like.. the year of Paul Bettany!) as Charles Darwin in this Darwin biopic out on January 22, 2010. More current conceptual is the thriller Inception (July 16, 2010) the latest from Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins) whom seems to have yet again come up with a killer idea with this film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy.

1 Man Vs. ... the... World!
Revenge. Survival. Redemption. Who knows what else, but all these guys have a mission and in most cases it's for them alone and they are gonna get it done and blow some stuff up along the way. The year stars off with Denzel Washington kicking butt vs Gary Oldman and lackies in The Book of Eli (Jan 15, 2010). Then on January 29, 2010 it's Mel Gibson's turn to get revenge for his daughter in Edge of Darkness. Matt Damon steps in on March 12, 2010 in a non Bourne-but-similar-feel-but-that's-okay-because-Bourne-was-good with Green Zone - but let's be hones, it looks cool and who doesn't love a hero searching for the truth? Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. team up again for the much anticipated sequel to Iron Man: Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010). Another frequent team-to-screen brings us the latest version of Robin Hood (May 14, 2010) and that team that brought us the powerhouse of Gladiator: Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe.

Action Women
The boys can't have all the fun, these femme fatale are set on kicking butt, taking names and in one case attempting to continue to survive a zombie apocalypse. First up is the July 23, 2010 release of Salt where Angelina Jolie kicks some major butt. Later in the summer it's Milla Jovovich's turn vs those ever undead-living zombies in Resident Evil: Afterlife (August 27, 2010). Oh, if it's afterlife - did the zombies find redemption? Should I move this to the religious section? Perhaps not.

Magic Reigns
If Paul Bettany has all the religious films, then Nicolas Cage got the magic cards starting with March 19, 2010 release of Season of the Witch set in the 14th century and involving knights, monks and witches and than later in the year with the July 16, 2010 release of The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) a live action version of the Walt Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice which also stars Jay Baruchel, Monica Bellucci and Alfred Molina. But when muggles talk magic we know the big contender in that arena this year will be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (November 19, 2010), the first of two parts adaptation of the 7th novel in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I have to pull out the books and start to re-work my way through that series in anticipation of the film.. but since it's November there is still lots of time.

Sword & Sandal
I love the term Sword & Sandal - don't you? I don't think I can ever get enough of these epic films but this year there are already several on the release schedule and out of them I'm most looking forward to Clash of the Titans (2010) (March 26, 2010), a re-make of the 1981 film of the same name this time starring Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation) as Perseus, Liam Neeson as Zeus, Alexa Davalos as Andromeda, Gemma Arterton as Io, Mads Mikkelson as Draco and Danny Huston ad Poseidon. Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter 2). Epic! Also sandal-y is Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Feb 12, 2010) which is based on the Rick Riordan young adult novel based in Greek mythology with a modern twist and stars Logan Lerman (3:10 to Yuma (2007), Gamer) stars as Percy Jackson. Last up in the category is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, based on the video game, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina, directed by Mike Newell and hits theatres May 28, 2010.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Character Posters
We are only a week and a half away from the release of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and I spotted these great character portraits around town recent. The film is a beautiful fantastical journey brought to us by director Terry Gilliam and stars Christopher Plummer, Andrew Garfield, Lily Cole, Tom Waits, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and the late Heath Ledger. Be sure to check it out in theatres starting Christmas 2009.

Eclipse Poster & IMAX-ness
The Eclipse poster is out and looks promising, dark, moody, dangerous - woohoo! See image of it over here. More Eclipse news with week with Summit shared that the film will be shown in IMAX, and "digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology". So not just on the screen, but actually fitted to IMAX. That's pretty big, literally.

The Runaways at Sundays & Poster
It's a week of posters this week and the new Joan Jett band biopic The Runways starring Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning has a poster out. Great timing there too as the film has been selected to show at 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Shout out to Pretty/Scary for including this in their article on women directors at Sundance 2010.

Vampire Diaries Marathon
Getting this New Moon Monday out early as today marks the first day in the 5 day "Vampire Diaries" Marathon. It starts tonight at 8pm EST on MuchMusic here (check your local listings) and show two episodes per night from December 14 - 18, 2009 and that is all the episodes we've seen! It's a great way to catch up if you missed any or to see them all if you are just joining the party now. It's been a really fun show so far and gained tons of popularity so much so that there has been a cast tour announced in the States and their own 'Team Damon' and 'Team Stefan' shirts over at Hot Topic. So, what's Switzerland there, Team.. Mystic Falls?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies set for 2011
A film adaptation of the novel "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", a skewed few of the Jane Austen novel with a zombie slant, to it is in the works. Variety reports that Natalie Portman is involved in the project in a producing role as well as to star. Pretty exciting. I guess I should read the book, I've heard it's a lot of fun.

Vampire Diaries Marathon
Getting this New Moon Monday out early as today marks the first day in the 5 day "Vampire Diaries" Marathon. It starts tonight at 8pm EST on MuchMusic here (check your local listings) and show two episodes per night from December 14 - 18, 2009 and that is all the episodes we've seen! It's a great way to catch up if you missed any or to see them all if you are just joining the party now. It's been a really fun show so far and gained tons of popularity so much so that there has been a cast tour announced in the States and their own 'Team Damon' and 'Team Stefan' shirts over at Hot Topic. So, what's Switzerland there, Team.. Mystic Falls?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies set for 2011
A film adaptation of the novel "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", a skewed few of the Jane Austen novel with a zombie slant, to it is in the works. Variety reports that Natalie Portman is involved in the project in a producing role as well as to star. Pretty exciting. I guess I should read the book, I've heard it's a lot of fun.

With New Moon already in theatres and Eclipse more than 6 months away I've decided to broaden the focus of New Moon Mondays to including anything that lands of the fantastical film radar. Of course if there is pressing vampire and Twilight news I'll be sure to included it! Like the fact that Taylor Lautner will be hosting Saturday Night Live this Saturday December 12, 2009. Too bad they didn't pair his hosting with Muse performing which will be next week (Dec 19/09) when James Franco hosts.

The soundtrack to Twilight has received a nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for the Grammy's. Fellow nominee's include Cadillac Records, Inglourious Basterds, Slumdog Millionnaire and "True Blood". Feels like the Twilight soundtrack came out ages ago but the eligibility year for the Grammy's is October 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009. The ceremony will be held on Sunday January 31, 2010 and will air live on CBS from 8PM.

Keeping an eye on reactions it's down one percentage sitting at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, up 0.1 to 4.6 on IMDb, and holding at 44 on Metacritic (with a 4.1 user rating). Looks like the opinions are pretty set from here on out.

New Moon Reactions
So far the voices on New Moon feel a bit polarized, the critics don't seem to like it, the fans reaction range from loving it to being disappointed but overall not feeling like there are a lot of voices from the fans on if they liked it but there is lots of news on the box office, TV appearances, etc. So far it's on 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, on 4.5 IMDb and 45 on Metacritic. The most common phrase I've heard to describe it are 'faithful adaptation' from critics and 'better than the first one' from fans.

New Moon DVD Details
Wow, the film was released only three days ago and we already have information from MTV with an interview with director Chris Weisz who reveals that the DVD with have a commentary track with him and the three big stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. I'll be looking forward to hearing that. The article also outlines some deleted scenes that will be included.

No Breaking Dawn News
Ok, I'll admit reporting on the fact that there is no news is a little weird, but I really thought we'd have heard inklings on whether or not a Breaking Dawn film is going to be going ahead. Last year we heard the day after Twilight's release that New Moon was in the works. Lots of rumours, including whether or not it will be 1 or more films, but so far nothing solid. I can't imagine it being more than 1 film, but then again it's my least favourite of the books.

I Want Some More: Vampathon
The Vampathon: Vampire Film Marathon is now complete as it was a countdown to the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. I have to admit it feels a little bittersweet given that New Moon did not meet expectations, but it was fun to revisit some of my favourite vampire films as well as seeing tons of great vampire films like Near Dark to Strigoi. I'll be doing a sum up of the experience later in the week so keep your eyes peeled and your necks covered for it. It's going to be so strange not to be watching vampire films every week, I wonder how I'll keep busy.

Out and about there are posters and promo material everywhere you look! Subway stations in Toronto have tons of them if you haven't seen enough in the theatres themselves. In addition to the first poster we saw with Edward in the front and Jacob between him and Bella, now we have 2 more sprouting about town. The Bella & Edward together poster with the Cullens in the background (pictured below), along with The Volturi looking delightfully ominous (pictured above).

The really exciting thing is that it will be on AMC here in Canada, which I couldn't confirm until recently. Review will be up Wednesday November 11, 2009.

Looking good! I impressed that the look and feel are different than Twilight, but still fit in really well with the world.
