Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 31, 2010! It is just about time to hand those yearly reins from 2010 to 2011 but before we do I always like to look back over the year in film and reflect. I'm been planning and plotting at this for a while, but luckily I've shifted to actually writing these lists and now you can enjoy them too! I check in on the results of my 2010 Most Anticipated Films of 2010, muse over my favourite Movie Memories of 2010, Fresh New Faces & Ones to Watch, a 2010 Reading Wrap Up on my Book-to-Film Reading Challenge and a newly style "Best of" list that this year I'm deeming as The Perfect List. That's lots to keep you busy reading, which is a good thing as it's a light week for releases!
This week we have a really quiet week of releases, with two films out on Thursday Dec 30, 2010 at Lightbox: Gasper Noé's Enter the Void which I've heard fantastical things about for ageas and am thrilled to see that it's sneaking out right at the end of the year. Our second releases is Jean-Luc Godard's Film Socialisme, which I'll admit I've only heard horrible things about ranging from self-indulgent to incoherent. Tough sell on that one!
No wide wide releases this week, and in fact no Friday releases at all. I guess that's what happens when it's a Friday New Years Eve, one of the few times of the year though even being a holiday, people don't usually head to theatres. I'm going to tuck into a SciFi triple bill to ring in the new year with 2001: A Space Odyssey (scary!), 2010 (Helen Mirren with Russian accent!) and Blade Runner (fingers crossed it's no-voice over version!), because it doesn't feel like New Year's without seeing at least a little be of Blade Runner. See you in 2011!

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 24, 2010! It feels so rare that Friday is a the day that Christmas Eve falls on. It's one weekend where although I know there are always going to be films I want to see, I'll be holiday-ing at it's my families traditional day to celebrate with my Mom. But before countdown to dinner begins, (which it already has...hehe), let's take a look at the films that are being released this week.
In limited release this week we have two releases today, on December 24th with Barney's Version, which is based on the Mordecai Richler novel and stars Paul Giamatti in the title role for which he's been nominated for a Golden Globe. And yep, it's Canadian (well, a Canadian/Italian co-pro). Also out in limited releases is If You Are the One 2, from director Feng Xiaogang and it's playing in select AMC's in the city. It's a new title to me but after seeing the director's film Aftershock earlier this year, I'd certainly be interested in seeing more of his work! Will have to see how that one goes.
In wide release this week we have just one release and it has to wait until tomorrow which makes it a Christmas Day release on December 25, 2010 and that is Gulliver's Travels (in 3D) starring Jack Black, Jason Segal and Emily Blunt.
With just three films that's a pretty quiet Christmas weekend, but don't forget we had two film out earlier this week with the comedy Little Fockers and the Coen Brother's go western with a fabulously dark True Grit. For those feeling a little more for fun feel I loved and would recommend TRON: Legacy, at least to fans of the first film. Also, the fantastic biopic The King's Speech opens wider this week as well, and it's a must-see for awards and drama fans alike.

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 17, 2010! We are getting closer and closer to the end of the year with means getting to those last anticipated films and lots of awards centric films. This week the heat amps up with the Golden Globe nominations (see detailed list, list by film and nominations detailed and straight-up film list) and The King's Speech takes top honours with 7 nominations and I couldn't agree more with dishing out the love for it, it's one of those that I'm happy to see at this time of year and I even chatted about it on this weeks episode of the podcast. As we get to the tail end of the year, I'm starting to look ahead to 2011 and I'm curious to hear your views on what coverage you'd like to see here at Movie Moxie - if you have a moment, I'd love it if you'd fill out this survey and have your say!
In limited release this week we have only a few films includes one that's getting a fair amount of attention, Rabbit Hole which looks like a heart-wrenching drama starring Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest. A little more aligned to the holiday side of the season is Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale - an action/comedy/fantasy Christmas film from Europe that's playing this week at the Royal. Also out in limited release are the Thursday December 16, 2010 releases of I, Don Giovanni and one of my most anticipated films of the year, The Tempest from director Julie Taymour (Titus, Across the Universe) in a new adaptations of the Shakespearean play with Helen Mirren starring as Prospera and a compelling cast including Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond), Ben Whishaw (Bright Star) Alfred Molina, Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, Alan Cummings and Felicity Jones.
In wide release this week we have another heavy hitter, literally, for awards season with The Fighter which is based on a true story of brothers involved in boxing and stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, directed by David O. Russell (I Heart Huckabees). We also have TRON: Legacy, which is up there on my highly anticipated releases of the year and has had the oddest hype surrounding this year as a few months ago people seemed to be all excited and then recently started to turn cold. I'm still really excited for it though. Also out this week is the romcom How Do You Know and animated Yogi Bear.
We are also having some mid-week releases, which is great if you are trying to get your 2010 viewing in before the holidays begin. On Wednesday December 22, 2010 we'll see the Coen's Brother version of the western True Grit starring Jeff Bridges which I'm hoping I'll love, and we'll also see the release of holiday centric comedy of Little Fockers.

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 10, 2010!
In limited release this week we have just one release with The King's Speech, a royal family biopic centred on the journey of the Duke of York (Colin Firth) in his journey to overcome his stammer with the help of an unorthodox Lionel Logue. The film won 5 BIFA's and I anticipate it will (deservedly) be in this years Oscar race, I got a chance to see it and I'd highly recommend it - compelling story and spectacular performances by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush.
In wide release this week we have one of my most anticipated films of the year with the family fantasy The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (in 3D), the third film in the series based on the books by C.S. Lewis. We also have the espionage/romance The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp and the Bollywood film No Problem.
Been some re-jigging on the release schedule, as it looked like we were going to get Julie Taymour's The Tempest this week but it's been shifted to a Thursday December 16, 2010 release, plus if you didn't see Black Swan last week it's opening in more theatres today. If you can't wait one extra second to see Tron: Legacy it's having some midnight screenings next week on Thursday December 16, 2010. Check your local listings for show times.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 3, 2010
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 3, 2010! It's a toe-tapping, sing-a-long version of the newsletter this week with only a few releases but more music & dance related films today than over the whole year combined!
In limited release this week we have Black Swan from director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain, Pi) and starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as rival ballerinas in a company producing Swan Lake. The art direction alone looks flipping brilliant, and I can't help but love the creepiness of Vincent Cassel, but it also looks a heck of a lot like Single White Female. Even so, there will be dance, therefore I will be there. And why have only one dance film this week? Well, we don't...we have two with the musical Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, with tap dancing and singing featured in the trailer, although little challenging to sense *what* the film is about but again... if there is dance I want to see it! The toes don't stop tapping as we also have the Malaysian musical Sell Out, which is the first Malaysian regular release I've seen in theatres here in the T-dot. Rounding out the limited releases is the Thursday December 2, 2010 release of the documentary King of Pastry following the Meilleur Ouvrier de France competition.
In wide release this week we have the sole release of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. I'm actually surprized Black Swan is only playing in one location currently, hopefully it will have a wider release as the month goes on.

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday November 26, 2010!
In limited release this week we are mostly keeping it real, starting with Made in Dagenham, a dramatization of the 1968 strike against sexual discrimination in the UK which looks amazingly sweet for such a topic - Sally Hawkins also looks fantastic in it. We have holiday centric release with The Nutcracker in 3D and documentary Cool It round out the Friday releases. We also had the Thursday November 25, 2010 releases of biopic Vision: From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen and the highly acclaimed documentary Waste Land.
In wide release this week the new titles we have Bollywood goodness with Break Ke Baed and also have Tere Ishq Nachaya (make note that it's only playing with English subtitles in limited locations). We also have Tangled, Love and Other Drugs, Faster and Burlesque all release for US Thanksgiving and debuted in theatres just this past Wednesday.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday November 19, 2010!
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday November 19, 2010! It's quite a week of releases and we have to look a little back and a bit forward to cover all the releases on Thursday, Friday and in preparation for American Thanksgiving - next Wednesday! But the real biggie of the week, and one of the biggies of the year is smack dab in the middle of releases with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. That will make the muggles happy!
In limited release this week we have several choices including the documentary Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer and the romance Till My Heartaches End from the Philippines. Thursday Nov 18, 2010 releases of the week include the fun, informed documentary for all the Star Wars fans out there with The People vs. George Lucas. And last up I may have to check out The Light Thief not just for the acclaim, but also because how often do you have the opportunity to see a Kyrgyzstan co-production?
In wide release this week we have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, which is literally my most anticipated film of the year and I can't wait to see it, and it will be interesting to see how this 'Part 1' of trend goes (Part 2 will be releaed July 15, 2011), and other films have picked up the idea as well (like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn). We also have releases of the Paul Haggis directed The Next Three Days starring Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks and Guzaarish, a Bollywood film for which I'm going to straight-up quote IMDb for the description of "Ethan, a magician rendered paralyzed in an accident, sets off a furor when he makes a petition to the court to end his own life." That's epic.
The wide releases continue next week for American Thanksgiving with Wednesday November 24, 2010 release of Burlesque, a film that features a woman (Cher) runs a Burlesque club, enter small-town girl who wants a chance to make it big (Christina Aguilera). Yeah, I'll be seeing as I'll also be seeing Faster, although with more mixed feelings considering it's a revenge centric film where the trailer strongly focuses on a message of forgiveness (although the visuals say otherwise), either way I know I'll be seeing this flick starring Dwayne Johnson. We also have Love & Other Drugs, a romance/drama with Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway and last up is Disney's Tangled, a Rapunzel redux of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the trapped princess with very long hair.

Film Fan Fridays for Friday November 12, 2010!
Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!
Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday November 12, 2010!
In limited release this week we have lots of release to choose from including the stellar crime film with a family drama dark comedy punch Down Terrace - if you are in Toronto or Vancouver I would definitely recommend checking out it out this weekend. We also have the multiple BIFA nominated indie sciFi flick Monsters and the highly anticipated biopic 127 Hours starring James Franco as mountain climber Aron Ralston from director by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, Sunshine). We also have two Thursday November 11, 2010 releases with the touching and gritting Irish film Kisses which follows two very young protagonists to see what life could be like out there on their own (see a see a selection from the Q&A from TIFF 2008 where director Lance Daly describes why he wanted to tell this story), and also out is I Wish I Knew / Hai shang chuan qi from director Jia Zhang-ke (Still Life, 24 City / Er Shi Si Cheng Ji) who has a unique and compelling storytelling style.
In wide release this week we have two literally explosive releases with science fiction/thriller Skyline that centres around the an ominous alien invasion and stars Eric Balfour ("Haven", "Six Feet Under") and Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine as a veteran and new rail operators that work torwards stopping a runaway train. Yep. So last week - I wasn't overly interested in any of the films out but this week I want to see EVERYTHING! Funny how that happens.
