Box Office Footnotes

This Week: Don't Miss ShowbuzzDaily's First Annual Summer Blockbuster Draft!

The last weekend of April is an odd one for Hollywood:  as Mitch Metcalf's analysis shows, sometimes it begins the parade of summer franchises, and in other years it's just the quiet end of Spring.  Fast Five, of course, puts 2011 firmly in the former category--in fact, with positive word of mouth likely, Marvel and Paramount have to be a little nervous about how much it'll damage Thor next week.  (Particularly Marvel, since Thor, with July's Captain America, provides the lead-in to next year's megafranchise movie The Avengers).

Tyler Perry's movies always have steep Week 2 drops, so Big Happy Family's fall isn't unusual.  But the Water for Elephants hold, considering its genre, won't do much for the bankability of Robert Pattinson or Reese Witherspoon--plus next week it'll face Something Borrowed, a better movie.

Prom is just an appetizer to Disney's giant summer offerings, but even with limited expectations, it's failing to deliver.  Hoodwinked Too must have been green-lit with the movie mogul equivalent of beer goggles.

Second-guessing release patterns is a Hollywood sport, but one has to wonder if Focus and Fox Searchlight are questioning their decisions to slowly roll out Jane Eyre and Win Win, respectively, since they'll each reach $10M at best.  A few years ago, they would at least have found an audience on homevideo, but with the buttom having dropped out of that business, there's not much revenue left for them.  The same holds true for The Conspirator, while Atlas Shrugged Part I proved the audience of Ayn Rand fans to be as front-loaded as teenage girls.

Next weekend's most interesting debut won't be its biggest:  Summit will open the problematic (for many reasons) Mel Gibson vehicle The Beaver in just 20 theatres and hope for the best before they expand.

[2011.05.01] SUKIE SHEK SAYS VONNIE LUI IS IN POOR SPIRITS

courtesy of mingpao.com

courtesy of takungpao.com

The film 3D SEX AND ZEN (3D YUK PO TUEN ji GIK LOK BO GAM) broke 30 million at the box office. Boss and producer Stephen Shiu Jr. Yesterday along with actor Tony Ho Wa Chiu and theme song perform Sukie Shek Wing Lei thanked viewers in Mongkok. They along with several actors knelt on the floor to thank heaven and earth. Voice actor Vienna and them song singer Shek Wing Lei gave away tissues. Ho Wa Chiu picked up Shek Wing Lei and joked that he would toss her into the crowd, which left her screaming.

Although Shek Wing Lei did not appear in the film, but she was very happy to learn about the good box office. Earlier Mainland viewers said that after selling her body she sold her voice, she honestly said that everyone mistook her for being in the cast. Stephen Shiu Jr. was planning a sequel, would she be interested? She said that she would wait for the boss' arrangement, but she would not perform in the buff. She was not worried about having less opportunities because after Freeze was disbanded she still had many changes. This theme song had over 1 million hits daily. Lead actor Vonnie Lui Hoi Yan was absent yesterday, Shek Wing Lei said that she did not vanish. She kept phone contact all along. Recently some negative news affected her emotions. She thought that Lui Hoi Yan was optimistic. She hoped the media not to disturb her family again and gave her more space. She reportedly considered retirement, Shek Wing Lei said that if that was true it would be quite regrettable.

FRIDAY APR 29 BOX OFFICE NUMBERS: Fast Five Roars to the Top

Fast Five delivered for Universal with a $77 million opening and is on track for a final domestic tally of $169 million.  This strong opening will push the weekend up around 50% versus the same weekend last year.  The other openers, however, were ignominious flops.

Fast Five should open with $77 million this weekend and is on a pace to finish with $169 million in North America when it crosses the finish line.  This should be the best opening and the best domestic total of the five Fast and Furious franchise.  Rio will move to second place with $15.5 million and is still headed for $151 domestically. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family should drop 59% to $10.3 million this weekend.  The film is headed for $63 million total.  Water for Elephants dropped a better 44% to $9.5 million and has been upgraded to $57 million domestic total.  African Cats should drop 47% (a little worse than expected) to $3.2 million this weekend and a $22 million North American final.

And then there's the rest of the openers.  Prom from Disney embattled Rich Ross regime utterly flopped with a $5.3 opening and will be lucky to total $13 million in North America.  Ouch.  Hoodwinked Too! from Weinstein, with its weirdly cheap animated look, belly flopped with a $4.5 million opening and might finish with $7 million domestically.  More King's Speech and fewer lame animation attempts, please.

On a per theater basis, Fast Five will average an excellent $21,100 at 3,644 theaters.  Prom should average a pitiful $1,900 at 2,730 theaters, and Hoodwinked Too! should average an even softer $1,800 average at 2,505 theaters.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night averaged a ghost town-like $313 per theater average Friday, which puts its weekend per theater average around $800.  An average like that makes Prom and Hoodwinked Too! look like runaway hits.

Total Box Office Volume

The Top 12 Films this weekend are looking like $140 million total.  This is a huge increase from the same weekend last year but somewhat lower than 2009 and before.  (This weekend has traditionally had a very stronger anchor such as Iron Man or X-Men Origins: Wolverine but last year stumbled slightly with Nightmare on Elm Street 3.)

Top 12 Films: First Weekend of May/ Late April

2007  $181  Spider-Man 3 $151, Lucky You $3

Next Weekend

Opening next week are Thor from Paramount, romantic comedy Something Borrowed from Warner Bros, and African-American comedy Jumping the Broom from TriStar.  Thor will clearly dominate the weekend but not at the same level as Iron Man 2, which opened with $128 million the same weekend last year.  (The documentary Babies also opened, whimpering with a little more than $2 million this weekend last year.)

Look for updates of the weekend box office on Sunday, based on the Saturday actual numbers.

[2011.04.30] LOUIS KOO MAKES SAMMI CHENG CRY

courtesy of takungpao.com

The film ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) shot on location in Shangri-La, Yunnan, which officially completed two days ago. At night a special banquet was held. Director Johnnie To Kei Fung, Wai Ka Fai, Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Louis Koo Tin Lok attended. At the event To Kei Fung asked Goo Jai and Sammi to sing, but Goo Jai was unwilling and even mentioned Andy Hui Chi On to mess with Sammi. They honestly said that this collaboration was pleasant and hoped to have a chance to work together again, but it definitely would not be SEX AND ZEN.

To Kei Fung spoke at the banquet. He thanked the team's effort for the past two months. Then he dragged Sammi and Goo Jai on stage to sing. Goo Jai looked awkward. "You are messing me with me!" Sammi later sang MOON REPRESENTS MY HEART and Goo Jai could only accompany her with dance. He even joked, "Good, Hui Chi On!" When Sammi sang SMALL CITY STORY Goo Jai took the chance to leave the stage. Halfway through Sammi forgot the lyrics and was about to leave when the audience screamed encore. She jokingly said no, if she kept singing she would have to charge. Sammi later toasted the guests and Goo Jai drank for Sammi like a gentleman. Finally Ah To, Sammi, and Goo Jai went on stage again and sang together, but Goo Jai ultimately did not sing.

Goo Jai later said that he was not a singer. Sammi joked that his SHEENA RINGO was quite a hit. Goo Jai helplessly said, "You are my loyal fan." As for Goo Jai yelling "Hui Chi On" on stage, Sammi said that Goo Jai was messing around. Goo Jai defended himself and said he only told the truth. Sammi immediately had nothing to say. Goo Jai continued to mess with her. "Ox tongue rice also spoke!" Sammi said that she would not talk about her personal life.

Sammi said that on the day of the Shangri-La wrap, she cried all day. She cried the most in her career in this film, even her eyes were swollen. She said that in one scene Goo Jai also gave a detailed performance as he was teary eyed. In a touching scene they really shed tears together. Sammi honestly said that some past experience helped her performance. When life was very depressing, it helped with the performance. She used real effort and emotions.

Goo Jai said that this time he saw a new Sammi. He praised her as very tough and she did not eat in order to slim down for the movie. Sammi was teary eyed and said that she started to understand what acting was, she learned to let go. She thought that working with Goo Jai was very interesting and looked forward to working together again next time. Goo Jai joked that as long as it was not SEX AND ZEN then he was fine. Sammi immediately laughed and said that she did not have what it took. Goo Jai also joked that he too did not have what it took.

In addition, two nights ago Ah To brought a dog on stage and raised a glass all over the place. Goo Jai pointed out that the dog was a key actor in the film. Originally after the shoot it had to be killed. Ah To after founding it wanted to take it to Hong Kong. Due to transportation issues, he asked the Mainland assistant director to take care of it.

[2011.04.30] DONNIE YEN DEFENDS SHORT GUYS

courtesy of takungpao.com

THE LOST BLADESMAN (GUAN WON CHEUNG) after reaching 40 million at the Mainland box office in three days opened Thursday in Hong Kong on 36 screens. Its opening day numbers already reached 781,250 and second place only to the champion THOR.

THE LOST BLADESMAN's strong open left the same day opening A CHINESE GHOST STORY (SIN NUI YAU WON) far behind. Even the recently hot 3D SEX AND ZEN (3D YUK PO TUEN) also slipped at the box office. From the current momentum, it should be able to break 10 million. The team was excited, lead actors Donnie Yen Chi Tan proclaimed righteousness endured. He even said excitedly, "Although THE LOST BLADESMAN faces the hot topic SEX AND ZEN, but to viewers it is fortunate because they can have a variety of choices. As long as everyone are drawn to the cinemas they can stimulate the box office. I hope every Chinese film performs well and success is not exclusive to foreign films. Ultimately that would be a good thing."

Many online debates have been about Chi Tan played Guan Yunchang, which seemed to be quite different in terms of height from the tall Lord Guan that everyone knew. Chi Tan said, "I don't mind everyone's opinions. Lord Guan is a historical figure, first impression is inevitable." He even lightly laughed and said, "Citing action actors as a example, from Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) others most Chinese actors are not considered tall. Yet their height has affected the characters they played because fact proved that acting conquered everything. Would a giant like Yao Ming be a good actor because of his height? That doesn't seem to make sense."

[2011.04.30] BONNIE XIAN KEEPS LOW PROFILE AS GUEST STAR

courtesy of takungpao.com

Bonnie Xian (Sin Sik Lai) yesterday attended a jewelry promotion and even modeled the accessories. She will guest star in the film HEI OI YEH PO (ENJOY HANGING OUT LATE), most female characters would make sexy appearances. Sik Sin Lai said, "I don't need to because I play the girlfriend who (Jason) Chan Pak Yu overlooks. I don't have to hang out in night spots or perform bed scene; however from the press conference I have always seen how amazing the female performers are. I would be completely overshadowed, the scene would be very spectacular, I of course just feel it's a feast for the eyes."

Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 29, 2011

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics!

Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday April 29, 2011! It's a quiet week as we only 5 films in release, and and that used to be a pretty normal number of releases but this year it feels like it's usually in the 10 films range. So many films to choose from. We also have Hot Docs kicking in to gear, bringing us 199 documentary films to choose from over the next week and a bit. I'll be covering the festival at Movie Moxie, be sure to stop by and check it out.

In limited release this week we have just one release with The Conspirator, a dramatization of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), a woman charged with conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. The film also stars James McAvoy and is directed by Robert Redford.

In wide release this week we have four films to choose from, starting with one that I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit it but I'm really looking forward to it: Fast Five. Yep. The fifth in the Fast and the Furious the series that features with fast cars, small clothing, a reprisal cast of Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Jordana Brewster plus new addition of Dwayne Johnson (Faster). We also have the Disney film Prom (was I the only one that thought it was a doc? ), which seems like it shows the chastest prom ever, although looks very cute nonetheless. We also have animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Bollywood release of Chalo Dilli.

Be sure to check out my Hot Docs previews (overview, reviews of Superheroes, Family Instinct, At Night They Dance and A Simply Rhythm, Imagining Emanuel and The Future is Now!) and swing on by Movie Moxie for coverage throughout the festival.

Have a great weekend!

Shannon

FAST FIVE: Boxoffice Express

Worth a Ticket:  Diesel and The Rock keep their pedals to the metal.

If you want to feel truly American, try reflecting on the new FAST FIVE while wall-to-wall coverage of the British royal wedding is airing on the television before you.  Every culture gets the pop entertainment it craves, and the dumb, disreputable mix of gunshots and explosions with chase scenes has been Hollywood's territory since the days of The Great Train Robbery (and coincidentally, Fast Five opens with a pretty grand train robbery of its own).  Remarkably, Fast Five, the latest in an originally low-rent franchise which has now survived for a decade--with its highest grossing entry ($353M worldwide) the last time around--may be the best entry yet in the series.

The Fast of the title may refer in part to the sleight of hand the movie plays with its own franchise, a bit of a genre card-shuffle.  For while it does open with that train being deprived of the fast autos in its cargo, and while there's a genuinely spectacular car chase toward the end, most of the time Fast Five is a heist movie.  Set, slightly confusingly, after Fast and Furious (the 4th movie) but before Tokyo Drift (the 3rd--that was the one, fans may recall, that ended with a cameo glimpse of Vin Diesel), Fast Five is mostly set in Rio de Janeiro.  Our usual trio is reunited:  Diesel, Paul Walker as his ex-cop sometime-adversary-sometime-colleague, and Jordana Brewster as Diesel's sister and Walker's girlfriend.  After that train robbery goes wrong, and they cross the murderous path of crime boss Reyes (the reliable Joaquim de Almeida), they realize that to bring him down and steal all his money, they'll need an Ocean's Eleven type team that includes Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Sung Kang and Gal Gadot.  Meanwhile, in the movie's true masterstroke, the team is being tracked by relentless DEA agent Hobbs, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson; Diesel and Johnson are such outsized icons of testosterone that when they're on-screen together, the movie becomes The Incredible Hulk as a duet.

Fast Five doesn't merit overpraise:  Justin Lin's direction is serviceable, not inspired, and the script by Chris Morgan could have used more humor and a hint of depth, especially since both Diesel and Johnson (if not Walker) have proved they can genuinely act when they have the material.  Also, the storyline borrows so liberally from the Ocean's series, The Italian Job, True Lies, Bad Boys 2 and others that it should practically bear their copyright notices.  And yet, as we prepare to enter a summer of superheroes and fantasy, it's rather nice to see a big-budget action picture that doesn't overplay its CG, keeping the stunts, for the most part, within the realm of human possibility.  This is Lin's third entry in the series, and he knows his actors by now:  Diesel doesn't overdo the growling and become a cartoon, the way he did in Babylon AD, and Walker is mercifully content to stay in the background much of the time.

Mostly, Fast Five is just fun, in its basically idiotic, mostly unsurprising way.  The men are endlessly tough, and the women are without exception gorgeous (and pretty tough themselves).  The pace holds for 130 minutes, and the thrills are delivered.  This is what Hollywood franchises are supposed to do, and yet often can't manage.

One last consumer note:  after 2+ hours, it would be understandable if you felt like jumping out of your seat as soon as the end titles started, but don't go anywhere.  Fast Five is the rare picture whose mid-credits coda not only adds something to the experience, it actually provides the intriguing set-up to the inevitable chapter six.  Fasten your seatbelts...

(FAST FIVE - Universal - 130 minutes - PG 13 - Director:  Justin Lin - Script:  Chris Morgan - Cast:  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky - Wide Release)

The Hong Kong Art Development Award took place at the Hong Kong City Hall two nights ago. Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam Kuen was the guest host and presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Joseph Koo Ka Fai; the Chief Executive said that he listened to Koo Ka Fai's work and praised Koo Ka Fai's over 1,200 songs that were appreciated by the cultured and the common, reflected the times and contributed a lot to the music scene. He was the light of the entire Chinese music scene. Koo Ka Fai said that this was not the first honor that he received from the Chief Executive, he joked though he only remembered what happened but did not remember what the award was. When Frances Yip Lai Yi reminded him he remembered it was the Bronze Bauhinia Badge; Brother Fai was very honored to receive the award. His wife also accompanied him to the event.

Yip Lai Yi, Hacken Lee Hak Kun and Prudence Liew Mei Kwan were guest performers and performed Brother Fai's classic hits. Hacken and Mei Kwan even presented flowers to Brother Fai. Hacken said that he grew up listening to Brother Fai and Alan Tam Wing Lun's songs. He was so familiar with Brother Fai's songs that he could sing them backward. He was also very honored to be able to perform Brother Fai's later work, the theme song of THE DRIVE OF LIFE (SHUI YUET FUNG WON).

In addition, Chow Yun Fat presented the Outstanding Artistic Contribution Award to Ann Hui On Wa. Hui On Wa after accepting the award happily embraced Fat Gor and said, "Fat Gor is my actor, but I am his fan. I am very happy that the event arranged for Fat Gor to present the award to me......I would also like to thank Mama." Later, the event again invited Koo Ka Fai and Yip Lai Yi on stage to pose for photos with Fat Gor and Hui On Wa.

[2011.04.29] AARON KWOK HINTS ABOUT TAKING A FEMALE TO SEE THE DETECTIVE II

courtesy of singtao.com

courtesy of mingpao.com

courtesy of takungpao.com

The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing starred film THE DETECTIVE II (B+ JING TAM) will soon open. The film is an extension of THE DETECTIVE (C+ JING TAM). Earlier Sing Sing honestly said that he liked this character because he was a little bashful and humorous. He said, "THE DETECTIVE II 'rose' from C to B. Last time he relied on a ghost's help to solve a case. This time he had to rely on himself and investigate step by step." He honestly said that in the film he had more internal scenes and felt suspenseful and intense. Sing Sing and director Oxide Pang Shun were good friends. He thought that Pang Shun actually was very suitable for comedy. He said, "Actually personally Pang Shun is very humorous when he talks."

This time THE DETECTIVE II added Patrick Tam Yiu Man, how was their first collaboration for Sing Sing? He said that Tam Yiu Man in the film played a cop who hindered his investigation, thus in the film they had a lot of struggles with a sense of humor in them.

Speaking of working with Liu Kai Chi again, Sing Sing said, "This time Uncle Chi will continue to play a cop, he still is my buddy." Sing Sing said that in the film he had intense scenes like a narrow alley car chase. He said, "In the scene a car chased me but the road was very narrow and uneven, if I tripped it would have been pretty dangerous."

Did Sing Sing ask for a double? He said that most Pang Shun movies would not use doubles, he performed many of the action scenes. Sing Sing pointed out that in one fight scene someone strangled him from behind with a wire and he was injured. He said, "When he was strangling me, the wire got into my eye. Because the injury was eye related, I went to see the doctor right away. After applying ointment and medication I went back to the shoot again."

Sing Sing honestly said that action scenes often had accidents and injuries. When he made STORM RIDERS (FUNG WON) he injured his hand in an explosion scene. Did Sing Sing have any expectation for the new film? He said, "I hope to succeed THE DETECTIVE with even better performance." Sing Sing honestly said that originally he was working on Yim Ho's new film, but for the promotion he halted production for a little bit.

Speaking of his films THE DETECTIVE II and LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI)'s simultaneous release and the competition with himself, Sing Sing said, "Actually I rarely compete with myself, but the movie genres are different. 'TIL DEATH DO US PART is about a farmer with AIDS who spends the rest of his life to love, THE DETECTIVE II has emotions and comedy. I hope both movies do well." Would he consider THE DETECTIVE III (A+ JING TAM)? He honestly said that he liked this character very much, as he was lovable and human. He would like the chance to work on THE DETECTIVE III, but first THE DETECTIVE II's word of mouth had to be better than THE DETECTIVE's first. He thought, THE DETECTIVE II was very suitable for couples. Would Sing Sing take his rumored girlfriend Lynn Xiong (Hung Doi Lam)? He avoided the subject and would bring a female friend. Was she Hung Doi Lam? He laughed and said no comment.

Donnie Yen Chi Tan in THE LOST BLADESMAN (GUAN WON CHEUNG) played Guan Yu, which recently has become one of the focus character of online attention. A slogan even spread online, "With Love With Honor Watch Lord Guan, Without Love Without Honor 'Thunder' Struck". Chi Tan thought it was good and said that the slogan had momentum. In the past many actors have played Lord Guan, each with his own uniqueness. He also wanted everyone to see how he interpreted a different Lord Guan under the cameras of directors Alan Mak Siu Fai and Felix Chong Man Keung.

Chi Tan pointed out, Guan Yunchang was one of the most difficult characters that he has ever played. With Sun Wukong he got his inspiration from his son, but with Guan Yunchang he had nowhere to start. With the difficulty, he had to work extra hard to study this character. However the biggest challenge was Chi Tan felt a lot of pressure with his limited Putonghua in front of the fluent in Putonghua Jiang Wen.

Chi Tan said that working with Jiang Wen was a pleasure, but he did not understand Cantonese and his own Putonghua was lacking. Thus when they rehearsed with Putonghua they had certain difficulties. He had to concentrate even more. During the shoot, Chi Tan spent his free time on the vehicle that the team provided for him and drove around the hills to reduce stress. The crew joked that they were enlighten to the fact that Lord Guan actually loved to drive fast too.

In addition, the famous North American distributor Weintstein earlier already bought the right to THE LOST BLADESMAN, which will be released in North America. Actually Weinstein's boss was a top Chi Tan fan. Chi Tan was excited about the North American purchase and hoped to perform in the North American market with this film.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS APR 29-MAY 1: The Third Up Weekend in a Row

Thanks to Universal's Fast Five, the box office is headed for the third up weekend in a row.  Other openers to have minimal impact, however.

Another up weekend is in store, fueled by Fast Five, the fifth in the Fast and Furious franchise (see complete franchise track below).  The film should open at a similar level to the previous entry, and positive reviews (especially high for an action film) could signal decent word of mouth and good declines in upcoming weeks.  Opening at approximately 3,500 theaters, Fast Five should average around $21,000 -- the best per-theater opening since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in November of last year.  Universal should have a very good weekend and set itself up for a decent summer.

The other opening films should have minimal impact.  Prom from Disney will struggle to get to a $10 million (and a below average $3,700 per theater opening weekend).  This could be yet another black eye for the Rich Ross regime and the beleaguered Disney marketing group.  Similarly, Hoodwinked Too! will struggle with a below average $3,400 per theater opening weekend.  Let's face it, the animated film just does not look like it is in the same league as animation from DreamWorks or even Universal/ Illumination and Fox (at least based on the television spots).  Finally, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (a horror comedy from Freestyle releasing) is opening at only 1,000 theaters, with a very weak expected per screen average of $2,400.  But Fast Five is strong enough to carry the load and deliver the third strong weekend in a row.

Fast and Furious Film Track

The Fast and Furious film franchise has proven to be remarkably resilient.  The second film built on the first, and then the third one (Tokyo Drift) utterly collapsed.  This would normally mark the end of a franchise, but the fourth film went back to basics and delivered the highest grosses yet.  Universal also shrewdly moved the fourth film out of the crowded summer to April, a month this franchise can own going forward.  Also, note that Fast Five is the most positively reviewed film in the franchise by far.

Rio will have another good weekend, while Madea's Big Happy Family should drop almost 55% (not unexpected because of the front-loaded nature of Tyler Perry's movies and the soft weekday business discussed Wednesday).  In contrast, Water for Elephants and African Cats will have lower second weekend declines, as indicated by their relatively solid weekday business.

LIMITED RELEASE: "POM Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Sold"

Watch It At Home:  Morgan Spurlock's latest doc is more stunt than revelation.

If Michael Moore were a movie franchise, Morgan Spurlock would be the direct-to-video entry in the series.  Or maybe the one that adds cheesy 3D effects to squeeze out every last dollar.   Moore is, lord knows, self-aggrandizing and fond of the sound of his own voice, but agree with him or not, he's fueled by genuine moral and political outrage.  Spurlock, who gave us Super Size Me, only seems to be trying to win a reality show competition.

Spurlock's latest bears the unwieldly title POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS:  THE GREAT MOVIE EVER SOLD, and really that's the whole movie in a nutshell.  Spurlock sets out to illuminate the world of  movie product placement and marketing, and just as he personally downed gargantuan amonnts of McDonald's food in Super Size Me, here he sets out to finance this very movie by building in ads and product integrations.  We watch him meet with advertisers and gradually see as the agreed-upon product placements appear in the movie; it's as meta as an episode of "Community," except without the actual wit or insight.
Spurlock knows how to keep a documentary fast-paced and amusing, but are there really any sentient beings left who don't recognize product placement when they see it?  (Spurlock is like the guy who just discovered that digitally streamed music doesn't sound as rich as vinyl.)  If anything, we're all so conscious of being sold, and the integrations have become so blatant, that they almost defeat the purpose--hardly anything can influence us without our being consciously aware that it's happening.  Since there's not much of an issue here, all Spurlock can do is load the movie with (perfectly straightforward) commercials that he had to include to get the integration money, while making the placements ludicrous enough to get a laugh.

The frustration of Greatest Movie is that there are real points that could be explored about this topic, but Spurlock just touches on them for seconds lest they slow down his show.  We get a glimpse of the restrictions and approvals that advertisers require in exchange for their cash, but then we're assured that Spurlock didn't agree to them.  There are interviews with Florida school board members who feel the need to push advertising on their students to make up for education budget cuts, but Spurlock is more interested in making an easy gag out of the fact that one ad is for a tattoo parlor.  A series of interviews with Hollywood directors about the effect of product integrations on their work just elicits the expected denials that it's damaged their films at all.  Spurlock himself purports to be troubled by "selling out," when in fact his whole movie is based on the gimmick.  (It would have been more interesting to see what, if any, placements he had to accept in order to finance Super Size Me or his FX TV series--that topic is never raised.)

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold is as disposable and superficial as the marketing it pretends to disdain.  The irony is that of all current documentarians, Morgan Spurlock is the one most in tune with the suits who are putting up the money; he's his own product.  But ironically enough, despite the promotional dollars and tie-ins detailed in the picture, not to mention his own presence on countless talk shows, the film opened to a mediocre $6500 in each of 18 theatres last weekend.  Sometimes the audience isn't quite as dumb as the moneymen expect them to be.

WEEKDAY BOX OFFICE UPDATE APR 25-26:

The magic number for mid-week box office (Monday-Tuesday combined) is 20% of the opening weekend, an indicator of better than average long-term playability.  Based on Monday-Tuesday's numbers, Madea's Big Happy Family fell short of this benchmark, while Water for Elephants and African Cats hit the mark.

During its first Monday-Tuesday in release (April 25-26), Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family averaged $3.76 million, or 15% of the film's opening weekend tally.  This percentage falls between the 17.5% for Why Did I Get Married Too? and the 11% for Madea Goes to Jail.  Tyler Perry films are generally front-loaded in the first weekend, so these relatively low percentages are not surprising.  The film should work quietly to about $60 million total domestically.

Read on after the jump.

First Monday-Tuesday of Release
Apr 25-26, 2011        Mon-Tue    % of Opening
                      (millions)
Madea's Big Happy (LG)   $3.76       15%
Water for Elephants (Fox)$3.50       21%
African Cats (Dis)       $1.21       20%

Films Comparable to
  Madea's Big Happy Family

Apr 5-6, 2010
Why Did I Get Married    $5.1        17.5%
  Too?  (LG)

Feb 23-24, 2009
Madea Goes to Jail (LG)  $4.4        11%

Although working with smaller opening weekend bases, Water for Elephants and African Cats both hit the 20% mark, indicating they could have decent to good second weekend declines and might play well in the coming weeks.

Long-term playability (very low second weekend decline, strong weekday numbers, the first full week beating the first weekend) are indications of the exceptional word of mouth that can translate to strong revenue on post-theater "windows".  (For a discussion of movie windows such as pay-per-view, DVD, online, pay cable, cable television and broadcast television, see ShowbuzzDaily Basics.)

[2011.04.28] SAMMI CHENG IS IN A HURRY TO RETURN TO HONG KONG AND SUPPORT ANDY HUI

courtesy of on.cc

Louis Koo Tin Lok, Sammi Cheng

courtesy of takungpao.com

Johnnie To Kei Fung, Wai Ka Fai, Zhang Guoli produced new film ROMANCING IN THIN AIR (GO HOI BUT JI LUEN II) earlier shot in the 320 feet above sea level Shangri-La. They planned to shoot for two months, in several days the team will complete its Shangri-La shoot and head to Kunming. Actors Louis Koo Tin Lok, Sammi Cheng Sau Man, Li Guangjie, Yang Yi and Sun Jiayi have all adjusted to the high altitude environment, and the shoot has been very smooth and pleasant.

After staying in the high mountains for awhile, Sammi showed no sign of high altitude illness. Instead she grew stronger as the crew gave her the nickname "Female Bull Wa". Although she did not have any high altitude illness, Sammi lost about eight pounds. Now she is only 98 pounds. She also said that she missed home cooking the most, after she returned home she definitely would gain weight. Was she missing the Ox tongue rice? She laughed and said no comment, only that everyone was homesick. She joked that she was so thin that even her chest shrunk into her large intestine. However, Sammi was only thin to be on camera.

Although this was a romantic comedy, Sammi said that the character had a lot of potential. Working with Goo Jai again was very pleasant. Everyone had chemistry. A hot spring set was built at the location. Did she have any bathing scene? She joked that she was too thin, the director thought she was too bony so she was not permitted to. They only shot a scene in which she went into the water to save her husband. At the time she wore diving gear, but due to rain it still felt very cold. However she saw how pretty the shot was she thought it was worth the effort. In the film she was very feminine and had many costumes that required wigs. Yesterday she wore a wig that cost 20,000, at the same time she had to put away "mi Gor" (her tomboy side). Did she have any kiss scene? She joked, "The director was afraid that we would die from panting too hard if we kiss too much, so no. It's no big deal, Goo Jai and I had one before. With previous rumors with Goo Jai, was she afraid of Andy Hui Chi On getting jealous? "I don't think about that......actually I am not worried. (Any electricity between you?) Hahaha, working this well with an actor is rare.......actually (Andy) Lau Tak Wa and I work this well too. (Has On Jai visited you on the set?) Secret, I am not talking about personal stuff. (Did you bring salted ox tongue?) It's too cold, it would have become tough ox tongue, no......ordinary couple would call everyday, work is work!" She would like to complete her work soon to return to Hong Kong and enjoy her boyfriend's concert.

Goo Jai was asked whether he and Sammi have any electricity between them. He humorously said, "Does Shangri-La have an electricity leakage?" Later he said that he and Sammi trusted each other and were co-stars with a lot of chemistry. They worked with confidence and ease. He felt bad for her over these two months. Because in the film she often had to cry, her emotions fluctuated a lot. Director To Kei Fung said that this shoot was very smooth, only half the people had high altitude illness. They also had a medicine shortage as workers had fever, nausea and required hospitalization for oxygen. He also joked that Sammi only had one meal every two weeks. He guessed that she lost more than 8 pounds, but she would get fat after a few meals in Hong Kong. On Jai did not need to ache for her. Why did he have no kiss scene? He said that if they panted, lacked oxygen and had to be hospitalized then it would have problems. After completing this film, Ah To will head to Cannes to be on its jury.

In addition, Koo Tin Lok in A CHINESE GHOST STORY (SIN NUI YAU WON) played Yin Chet Ha from his youth to maturation. His costumes also had to coordinate. As the mature Yin Chet Ha he had to wear a fake beard. Goo Jai said, "The glue irritated the skin; since we shot in the summer, the sweat and the glue made the face very itchy. It was very hard to take." Anyone who thought this was the toughest part would be sadly mistaken. Goo Jai helplessly added, "One scene truly was a 'shower in blood' as bloody red liquid was thrown at my face. I have no idea what the so-called dog blood was, it sting the eyes but I had to force them open. I thought that I could finish the shot in one take. Who knew that due to the heat the make up melted and I had to shoot it again."

The 60 million RMB Jeff Lau Chun Wai directed holiday comedy EAST MEETS WEST 2011 (DONG SING SAI JAU 2011) yesterday held a production start ceremony in Huizhou. The director led the cast including Eason Chan Yik Shun, Karen Mok Man Wai, Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Alex Fong Lik Sun, Stephy Tang Lai Yun, William So Wing Hong, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To) and Mainland actress Sitar Tan (Tam Wai Wai) in attendance. However everyone's lips were locked when asked about the film story and characters. Director Lau Chun Wai revealed that this was a folk fairy movie.

The cast yesterday entered on a red carpet with masks in hand. Back then Lau Chun Wai's EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES (DONG SING SAI JAU) was very popular. Returning to the title after so many years, the previous version's Carina Lau Ka Ling and Veronica Yip Yuk Hing sent congratulatory videos. Wong Kar Wai, Sammo Hung Kam Bo and others also sent supportive videos.

The film will have over 60 actors, some of the actors spoke about the production yesterday. Then they cut a "East Orange West Grapefruit" cake, with the orange and grapefruit standing for "achievement". The event yesterday announced Eason's character as an "English gentleman". Eason said that the director also dressed very English yesterday. Since he studied there before, the director this time discovered the other side of his acting specialty. As for the character detail, Eason was unwilling to reveal too much. He only said that his character and So Wing Hong's character were the exact opposite of their real lives. He normally dressed like a mini bus driver but this time in the film he played a gentleman. The costume fitting alone took 8 hours as he had six costumes. So Wing Hong said that if he appeared in Admiralty with his costume even the paparazzi would not recognize him.

Fong Lik Sun revealed that he and Tang Lai Yun would have a "flesh" exchange. Eason joked, "I don't know, would you believe what Siu Fong says?" However, he looked forward to working with Stephy and stressed that it would not be a sexual or physical exchange, but a visualization of their inner exchange. He and Mok Man Wai would also have physical contact. Earlier when they worked together on ENTER THE PHOENIX (DAI LO OI MEI LAI), they did not have enough scenes together. This time they finally had the chance to work together again. Yesterday Mok Man wai dressed provocatively, she said that in the film she would have sexy performance with four or five different looks.

Fong Lik Sun and Tang Lai Yun again worked as a couple but this time they would not have many scenes together. Stephy said that she and Eason had the most scenes, as they had an intricate but complicated relationship. Siu Fong revealed that she and Eason would have "flesh" exchange. Would Siu Fong mind? He joked, "It's just an exchange, it's nothing. Everyone is just studying acting." Speaking of working with Eason, Siu Fong said that he did not die from laughing at him but from drowning from his spit. Eason truly lived up to his title of "BS God". Yesterday Siu Fong said that he would like to be Director Lau Chun Wai's assistant director. He honestly said that he worked with Director Lau five times in four years and each time he benefited a lot. He would like to become an assistant director. Thus he always called him as "Director Lau" and never "Uncle".

In addition, Cheng Yi Kin revealed that in the film he had a wife. However for now he did not know who would play her. Would he recommend his girlfriend Yoyo Mung Ka Wai? He said that the director did his ideas. He would just hand himself to the director. Would he mind playing "double sausage" like Tony Leung Chiu Wai did? He would not mind as he trusted the director very much.

Ah B yesterday attended the press conference, this time Ah B would not only perform but also serve as a consultant.

Did he get two paychecks? He said that he did not care because he and director Lau Chun Wai were good friends. Since FIST OF FURY 1991 (SUN JING MO MOON 1991) he has always wanted to work with him again. He truly was very happy about this opportunity.

Did he help look for investors? He said, "I would if I could." Was he interested in working behind the scene? Ah B said that after so many years in this business, with so much experience if he did not it would be very wasteful. He would not mind directing in the future.

Fashion store I.T. boss Shum Ka Wai two nights ago held a grand opening ceremony in Causeway Bay, over 50 artists like Carina Lau Ka Ling, Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, Julian Cheung Chi Lam and wife Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and others attended. Recently artists Max Mok Siu Chung and Suen Hing were arrested on drug charges, leading to speculation of a drug using artist list. Some tabloids even hinted at artists. Lau Ka Ling was asked whether she was under suspicion? She directly said that she would not take drug. If anyone believed that she took drugs they were silly. Shum Ka Wai's wife Chingmy Yau Suk Ching also attended, but Yau Suk Ching maintained her usual low profile. Pak Chi after the ceremony also rushed in a hurry.

Lau Ka Ling said that she came to congratulate Yau Suk Ching because they have known each other for years. Did she show her support for free? She said almost, but joked that she did not sponsored her. She only got a discount. Ka Ling earlier won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress, she said that her emotions have already settled down. More movies have been offered to her but she did not get a raise. Did she and her husband celebrate? She said, "Not yet, he is still making a movie. I still haven't seen him yet." Ka Ling said that her husband already did his part and she was very pleased. However she did not reveal what it was. She said, "I would be happy for me. He was more excited than me." If she had a child, would her life be more perfect? Ka Ling said not necessarily, life has many things. She would not only focus on having a child, which she would leave up to chance.

In addition, Peter Chan Ho Sun recently worked with director Teddy Chan Tak Sum on the new film THE FLYING GUILLOTINES (HUET DIK JI). They were rumored to be at odds and thus had to ask Andrew Lau Wai Keung for help. FLYING has been postponed half a year. Two nights ago Chan Ho Sun explained that the script was not ready and for now it had to be postponed. He said that he and Chan Tak Sum were not at odds, but the delay would cost several millions.
