Zhang Yimou and THE FLOWERS OF WAR cast yesterday appeared at the Berlin Film Festival yesterday and attended the premiere.  Before that, Zhang Yimou spoke with Xinhua reporters.  THE FLOWERS OF WAR production process was very complex and involved many different languages.  It was a result of people from over 20 nations and places working together.  Zhang Yimou said, "This was a very unique experience.  I believed such an unique experience would be reflected in my work in the future."

This year China had WHITE DEER PLAIN, THE FLOWERS OF WAR and FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE taking part in the film festival.  In addition nine films took part in the short film, panorama and other segments.  Zhang Yimou said, "Actually it should be even more."  He felt that Chinese directors should participate in more international film festivals and said, "Not just Berlin Film Festival, all international
film festivals are very important to Chinese films because they are windows."

Speaking of the old subject of Chinese films "going global", Zhang Yimou said, "This slogan has been shouted for years, but actually any type of cultural product has no shortcut to go global, the key is in good work.  Cultures may be different but the emotions are the same.  As long as good work that stands up in common human emotions can exceed the obstacles of nations, races, geography and culture and go global."  For Chinese films to "step outside", they need even more young directors to touch people with good work.  As for how to create good work, he simply answered, "Everyone should try to do their best."

On the day of the premiere, Zhang Yimou, writer Yan Geling, Ni Ni, Christian Bale, Dong Dawei and others appeared on the film festival red carpet.  Before the premiere, they appeared at the film festival press hall and responded to reporters' questions.  Zhang Yimou said that he chose to make this film because this story was very unique and deeply attracted him.  When asked why he often made his movies from the female perspective, he said, "Maybe because I am a male director."

Some European viewers said that the story seemed excessively cruel, Zhang Yimou said that the facts were much crueler than in the film.  however he hoped this part of history would be able to make people think about and cherish peace.

In addition, the Taiwan film 10+10 representatives earlier arrived in Berlin.  They included directors Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Kevin Chu Yen-Ping, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Wei Te-Sheng and others.  Yesterday they attended the press conference.  This was Cheung Ngai Ga's fourth Berlin Film Festival.  She said, "Every time I come here it feels more and more cheerful, I also feel younger and younger."

[2011.11.07] SHU QI COMPLIMENTS MICHELLE CHEN

The 48th Golden Horse Film Festival's 10+10 film joint creative project opened already.  The film consisted of 20 directors' 5 minute short films.  Participating directors included Kevin Chu Yen Ping, Wu Nien-Jen, Chang Tso-Chi, Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Chen Kuo-Fu, Leon Dai, Wei Te-Sheng, Hou Hsiao-Hsien and others.  Golden Horse chair Hou Hsiao-Hsien worked with Shu Qi and Mei Fang on THE GOLDEN STRING.  In the story a mother was afraid that her daughter would need money after marriage and left her a gold tile, which symbolized inheritance.  Hou Hsiao-Hsien said that "gold" was something that absolutely would not change, and "string" was a value and a belief.  "Golden String" meant a value that would not change.

Shu Qi, Mei Fang and Director Hou earlier appeared at the opening ceremony press conference.  Director Hou praised Shu Qi's deeper and deeper acting abilities.  She only needed the slightest of hints to be able to perform the feeling that he wanted.  However Shu Qi said that some of THE GOLDEN STRING's content was too impractical.  For example in the film the mother wanted to give her daughter gold for emergency money.  Shu Qi said that after the film she went home and asked her mother for gold.  Finally her mother said, "You have to give it to me, not me to you."  She joked that now the times have changed, daughters had to buy gold for mothers.

Shu Qi with BEAUTIFUL LIFE received a Golden Horse Best Actress nomination.  When asked about her confidence, Shu Qi humbly said, "Actually I feel like I already got it.  The nomination to me already is a type of recognition.  The competition actually is very strong."  As for the now very popular Michelle Chen, Shu Qi had nothing but compliment for her potential.  She said that in HEAR ME Michelle Chen has already touched her.  Director Hou said that Taiwan film's potential has already reached a mature level and even saw a lot of variety in Taiwan film development, which was Taiwan's advantage.

Last year with the film VILLAIN Satoshi Tsumabuki won many Japanese Best Actor awards. He changed from the blond and unkempt murder image in the film and appeared in a black suit. Satoshi Tsumabuki not only praised Shanghai food as "very delicious" but also revealed that in
October he will come to China again and work with Shu Qi on the Hou Hsiao-Hisen directed film NIE YIN NIANG. He thought that his performance secret was "acting is forgetting yourself and becoming the character."

Satoshi Tsumabuki said that most of his understanding of China came from Chinese films that were released in Japan. He said that he admired very much Zhang Yimou and his current co-worker Hou Hsiao-Hsien. He also liked Zhang Ziyi very much. As for future dreams, he bashfully smiled and lowered his head.
