[2011.11.05] LU CHUAN'S THE LAST SUPPER WRAPS

The Lu Chuan directed, Liu Ye, Chang Chen and others starred THE LAST SUPPER after nine months in production earlier wrapped, but on the last day actors still had to work in a tough environment.  That day the team went to shoot on the plains, when rain and snow already started to fall and temperature dropped to 5 degrees Celsius below zero.  The actors though still only wore flimsy costumes.  As Liu Bang Liu Ye roared into the wind at the fortress, rain and now directly went into his throat.  However he still was able to smoothly deliver his lines; as Empress Lu Qin Lan even had to crawl in the snowy and muddy ground while collapsing from crying.  She even had to do several takes.  Qin Lan's face was mixed with tears and snow.  She was so cold that she already could not speak.

Since the production began, rumors like "investors backing out" and "film halting production" were endless.  Lu Chuan even was called "Slow Slow Lu".  Yet he was not affected at all and continued to his "slow work yields neatness" nature.  By the end of the production his appendicitis even acted up again, but in order to not hinder progress he insisted against going to the hospital for surgery.  On the set he had a IV drip and his professionalism touched many.

Famous director of KEKEXILI, CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH, Lu Chuan yesterday led his new film THE LAST SUPPER (WONG DIK SING YIN) actors Liu Ye, Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Chang Chen and Huo Siyan for its first global press conference in Xiangshan film studio in Ningbo, Zhejiang. The location was one of the major locations of Liu Bang's palace.

Chang Chen who played Han Shin opened up the press conference. The host asked him about the production and he said that earlier he has already worked with Liu Ye and Ng Yin Cho. Due to their different personalities, the collaborations have been rather interesting and the production process has been pleasant. As for working together again, he honestly said that they were all a different. "Ultimately it has been so many years, Liu Ye has a child, Ng Yin Cho is a husband with a family, both are more mature. However work wise we still have chemistry, privately our relationships are rather decent as well."

Ng Yin Cho who played the Chu King Xiang Yu brought Du Juan who played Consort Yu to the stage. Known as "Little Zhou Xun" Du Juan was still a new comer. She thanked Lu Chuan for giving her the chance to play Consort Yu. "I feel very lucky, over these few months I learned a lot. I learned to act with professionalism. All the co-stars are elders who are very glad to teach me." The final appearances were Liu Ye who played Liu Bang and Qin Lan who played Empress Lu. Some said that Liu Ye claimed to be very similar to Liu Bang, which he denied and added that perhaps because both their last names were Liu they had the same blood line. Thus he felt familiar. Liu Ye thought that the character was a huge challenge because he had to play it from youth to old age. The age difference gave his a little pressure that he needed to overcome during his performance.

courtesy of mingpao.com

The film LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI)'s director Gu Changwei invited 3 director friends Jiang Wen, Lu Chuan and Feng Xiaogang to guest star. Jiang Wen played a tough train engineer, Lu Chuan a village neighbor and Feng Xiaogang a traffic manager. In one scene Feng Xiaogang held the traffic baton and yelled, full of express and comedic senses. Gu Changwei praised his acting as extraordinary and even promised to return the favor with the right script. However because the film had to be cut down, Gu Changwei helplessly cut away Feng Xiaogang's role. Feng Xiaogang was not angry. He posted online about LOVE FOR LIFE's almost 40 million RMB box office, "Congratulation Changwei, if you didn't cut out my scene the box office would have been even better, haha!"

THE FOUNDING OF A PARTY will open in Hong Kong in mid June. The May 4th Movement was the climax of the film. The directors used over 1,000 actors to recreate the massive scene.

Directors Han Sanping and Huang Jianxin chose to work with CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH director Lu Chuan to complete the scene. For the scene to be even grander, three directors arranged for over 1,000 actors to participate. One of the scenes required a soldier who was guarding the gate to push students. Although only the hand appeared on camera, Lu Chuan still arranged for the worker to change into costume and even applied make up on his hand. They even spent half a day to "explain" how to perform this hand. The production was not sloppy at all.

In this scene, Feng Yuanzheng, Zhang Jiayi, Li Chen and others contributed their "craziest" in their film career. The highly difficult and fast dialogues left Feng Yuanzheng "off key" due to emotional upheaval; Li Chen often "lost his voice" from all the chanting. The actors in order to be perfect screamed at the top of their lungs and gave even their voices.

[2010.08.01] LU CHUAN HELPS ASIA GAMES FOR FREE

courtesy of takungpao.com

The first Guangzhou volunteer promotional film will officially premiere 100 days before the Asian Games. Famous director Lu Chuan reached in Guangzhou today to attend the press conference. He hoped through this promotional film more would be concerned about Guangzhou volunteers and become a Asian Games volunteer to deliver the Asian Game volunteer service motto of "Together, Even More Exciting". "Volunteer service is the kindest, highest and purest job. Guangzhou volunteers are very excellent. I am very happy to make the promotional film for them for no salary! I believe many directors will gladly do so. Hopefully this promotional film will bring more attention to our Guangzhou volunteers and the job of volunteer service." Lu Chuan said.

Speaking of the promotional film highlight, Lu Chuan pointed out that each major event's promotional production homogeneity phenomenon was severe. The Guangzhou volunteer promotional film's bright spot was that it displayed Guangzhou's heavy Langnan specialty and "friendly, inclusive" theme, even better it delivered the idea of "stimulating society for a harmonious Asia". In addition, in comparison to similar product, the Guangzhou volunteer promotional film had more solid feeling of life and closely followed volunteers' real lives. It was not generally elegant like star films. Lu Chuan felt, the 4 volunteer leads in the promotional film were ordinary volunteer representatives who were selected from the volunteers. They had real and touching stories and their experience could reflect the spirit of the Guangzhou volunteers. Guangzhou volunteer promotional film established a foothold in the Asian Games but not formally rooted in the Asian Games. It could be a "post Asian Games" volunteer promotional film.

The film CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH made over 150 million in the Mainland box office. After less than two weeks in release in Hong Kong, it also made an ideal 3 million. On the other hand the Feng Xiaogang directed IF YOU ARE THE ONE made 300 million in the Mainland and only 1.58 million in Hong Kong. Feng Xiaogang's other film THE ASSEMBLY also suffered the same fate, which made him earlier criticize the Hong Kong audience. However, CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH's decent box office dispelled Director Feng's comments. Although this film was shot in black and white it had great word of mouth. Johnnie To Kei Fung felt that the film showed Lu Chuan's persistence and perseverance. Andrew Lau Wai Keung praised the film's documentary style production. The black and white visuals not only did not reduce the visual effect but also added to the story's realism.

CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH's group booking response was also very passionate. Some schools even used it for history education purpose. Director Lu Chuan and the cast were very pleased to learn about the film box office and word of mouth. The director even treated the cast to dinner and drinks because the cast had a very tough time during the production. Now he was able to thank them and he truly wished that he could buy them drinks everyday.

[2009.05.14] JIANG YIYAN GAINS POPULARITY IN HONG KONG

THE CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH premiered last week. Lead actress Jiang Yiyan came to Hong Kong to promote with director Lu Chuan. This new star from the Beijing Film Academy appeared on TVB, Cable and other media interviews. Everyone was surprised that Jiang Yiyan who played a heroic prostitute in this film was very mild mannered and quiet. RTHK Radio 5's film program host Sze Kai Keung and Lau Shek Yin said that Jiang Yiyan opened the entire station's men and described her as having Fan Bingbing's feminine charm, Li Bingbing's quick wit, Gao Yuanyuan's sweet looks, Vicki Zhao Wei's cleverness, and Xu Jinglei's power of
making men's hearts pound without any word or movement. Four days after the show aired, the station received nearly 50 letters from male listeners who told Sze Kai Keung that they saw Jiang Yiyan on television and were completely under her spell. They wanted to form a fan club
through RTHK Radio 5 and invite Jiang Yiyan to appear in Hong Kong again. Sze Kai Keung responded that they were very busy with radio and did not have time to organize them. They could only relay their good intention to Jiang Yiyan's manager Wang Jinghua.
