[2011.12.02] GE YOU SIGNS WITH EMPEROR

Mainland Best Actor Ge You yesterday attended a press conference to officially sing with Emperor for three major productions in five years.  Emperor invested 500 million RMB on Ge You to plan and create movies, but he mercilessly joked that Emperor artists' Mandarin was not authentic enough.

Ge You yesterday attended the press conference in Happy Valley, announced the Emperor collaboration and signed the contract.  Big boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing led many of the company's artists like Twins, William Chan Wai Ting, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap and Sherman Chung Shu Man in support.  Ge You also announced that in the next five years he will plan film projects that he will star in and make three movies.  Reportedly the total investment amount reached 500 million RMB.

Ge You reiterated that he still was handling scripts.  As for the subjects, he responded, "I don't even know whether they are ancient, modern or contemporary yet."  Would he like to direct?  Ge You admitted, "Ten years ago someone has already asked me to direct, but for now I still haven't had the idea.  After being an actor for such a long time I feel being a director is too much trouble!"  He also mentioned that before the event he chatted with a male Emperor artist and discovered that with his accent he would have difficulty playing someone from Beijing.  He said, "He would be more suitable to play someone from Hong Kong who went to work in Beijing."  As for which artist he would like to work with, he admitted that if he had the chance he would like to work with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung.  As for the salary, he stressed that it was satisfactory but the most important was the large creative space.  He also said, "Yeung Sau Sing has been my friend for many years, I feel he is both familiar and pleasant."  On the other hand, Emperor boss Yeung Sau Sing said that he was deeply pleased to be able to sign Ge You but declined to discuss the salary.  He said, "We have been good friends for many years, being able to sign him truly is rare."  Yeung Sau Sing also said that this time he will provide him with a lot of freedom.  This time Ge You would be responsible for the film projects.

Yeung Sau Sing said, "Only they know about the Mainland taste, like I don't understand the jokes in IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 either."  He also stated that Ge You was the top actor in three lands on both sides of the strait.  He said, "Last Christmas he alone made 1.5 billion at the box office.  This year he hasn't made any movie.  I am worried about him having to make three movies in five years.  However he can decide whether they will be costume or modern."  As for signing others, Yeung Sau Sing said that many are under negotiation.  For example Jiang Wen is already a steady collaboration partner.  Emperor also has a part in Feng Xiaogang's movies.  It will also work with Chen Kaige's large production.  As for signing actresses, Yeung Sau Sing thought that the film industry remained male artist dominated so he has not had such a thought.  He said, "The Mainland is actor driven, few female Mainland stars can carry the box office.  It's the same way in Hong Kong, with Wa Jai (Andy Lau), Wai Jai (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and (Nicholas) Tse Ting Fung.  Few actresses can carry the entire film."  As for Ge You's accusation that some Emperor male artists' Mandarin was not Beijing enough, Yeung Sau Sing took the chance to reveal that he just talked with Kenny Kwan Chi Bun and criticized his poor Mandarin.  Would he hire someone to instruct?  He replied, "I will ask Mani (Fok Man Hei) to take care of it."

Kenny admitted that his accent was not Beijing enough, thus making local series would be hard.  However he said, "Ordinary communication isn't a problem.  We will improve our Beijing accent in hopes of being able to work with Ge You."  Steven Cheung Chi Hung said that he believed he would have to live there be able to practice his Beijing accent.  He said, "We ask Mani to get more Mainland series for us."  Twins' Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin admitted that Ge You was very highly positioned and very nice.  "If I will be able to work with him, I will be willing to sweep the floor and empty the trash."  Speaking of her less than fluent Mandarin, Ah Sa said, "Hong Kong artists indeed can improve more.  In the past I wanted to provide my own voice for my Mandarin roles, but because the approval required Beijing accent in the end I couldn't."

What did Wa Jai think if Yao Ming tried his hands in music?  Wa Jai said, "It would be very hard because the award show cameras couldn't reach Yao Ming's head."  Wa Jai and Feng Xiaogang on this rare chance to meet Yao Ming asked for a photo before presenting the award.  They even humorously stood at the top of the stage in hopes of making up for their height differences.  They also asked for an upper body only photo.

Some would like him and some wouldn't. Among Chinese directors I have been the one who has been the most judged. Luckily along with all the criticisms were many recognition, encouragement and praises that gave me the confidence and the courage to
not give up my passion for film and continue to work hard on making good movies. This time the Shanghai International Film Festival presents such an award to me, it is high recognition for my past work and spur me on in my future work. courtesy of mingpao.com

The film LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI)'s director Gu Changwei invited 3 director friends Jiang Wen, Lu Chuan and Feng Xiaogang to guest star. Jiang Wen played a tough train engineer, Lu Chuan a village neighbor and Feng Xiaogang a traffic manager. In one scene Feng Xiaogang held the traffic baton and yelled, full of express and comedic senses. Gu Changwei praised his acting as extraordinary and even promised to return the favor with the right script. However because the film had to be cut down, Gu Changwei helplessly cut away Feng Xiaogang's role. Feng Xiaogang was not angry. He posted online about LOVE FOR LIFE's almost 40 million RMB box office, "Congratulation Changwei, if you didn't cut out my scene the box office would have been even better, haha!"

courtesy of takungpao.com

The film LOVE FOR LIFE (JUI OI)'s sister film, the anti AIDS discrimination documentary, TOGETHER, held a global online premiere earlier. TOGETHER and LOVE FOR LIFE director Gu Changwei and stars Zhang Ziyi and Jiang Wenli attended the press conference. The AIDS patients who bravely performed in TOGETHER also attended.

Speaking of LOVE FOR LIFE, Zhang Ziyi pointed out that the character saved her as the film was very meaningful to her. She said, "The director gave me a window and let this character save me." Ziyi said that she had too many emotions that she had no way to express, but this character struggled along with her, faced the complicated conflicts of life and gave her another life. She said, "This was no ordinary character."

In TOGETHER, the filmmakers had a lot of close contact with AIDS patients. Zhang Ziyi even brought her visiting niece to play games with a boy with AIDS, filling the documentary with warmth. Zhang Ziyi said that this group brought her a lot of feelings. She was very touched to see how strong they were. They also brought her a lot of joy like friends. Ziyi also urged the community to be like their team and accept people with AIDS.

In addition, Feng Xiaogang, Jiang Wen and Lu Chuen guest starred in LOVE FOR LIFE. Which asked which director performed the best, Ziyi said that nothing needed to be said about Jiang Wen. His foul mouth train operator was very exciting. To her, Gu Changwei gave Xiaogang a particularly rare character to play. The performance was rare but was finally cut, which truly was regrettable.

[2011.02.25] FENG XIAOGANG, TSUI HARK, JACKIE CHAN, SEQUELS EXTEND SUCCESS

courtesy of takungpao.com

Huayi Brothres last year produced many commercial and critical hit films. Yesterday Huayi Brothers 2011 Project H press conference was held in Beijing to to announce the company's 2011 film plans. This year Huayi will invest in ten new films, three of which will be sequels LOVE IN SPACE, DETECTIVE DEE prequel and PAINTED SKIN 2. LOVE IN SPACE (CHUEN KAU YIT LUEN) continues from HOT SUMMER DAYS (CHUEN SING YIT LUEN YIT LAT LAT) while PAINTED SKIN 2 will be Wu Ershan directed. As for whether the Tsui Hark directed DETECTIVE DEE prequel will have the original cast Andy Lau Tak Wa, Li Bingbing, Carina Lau Ka Ling and others, Tsui Hark played mysterious. He only said that Detective Dee will be
younger, but their experience was even more mature.

Aside from sequels, heavyweights like Jackie Chan and Ronny Yu Yun Tai will work with Huayi on CHINESE ZODIAC and YANG CLAN WARRIORS. As Huayi Brother's most prominent director, Feng Xiaogang's AFTER SHOCK last year was very popular. Reportedly Feng Xiaogang this year will make either BATTLE OF TRIANGLE HILL or BOMBING OF CHONGQING. Yesterday the press conference only revealed that Feng Xiaogang will make a new film next year. Huayi chief Wang Zhonglei said that Feng Xiaogang this year indeed will make a big production, the preparation and the production period would be very long and require a lot of personnel and material. The title, subject and other details will be announced later.

"Little Director Fung" Stephen Fung Tak Lun this year will make TAI CHI, Huayi Brothers first giant production of 2011 with Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) and Chen Kuo-Fu as producers. Fung Tak Lun recently signed with Huayi under the radar and became Huayi's first Hong Kong star. Huayi in return presented an extravagant "dowry", aside from promising Fung Tak Lun independent professional agent team it also will tailor many film and television productions for him. TAI CHI will be Fung Tak Lun's first film as a director after joining Huayi.

Producer Lee Nin Kit will also play a legendary martial art figure in the film, but whether he will be the action director or not it remained uncertain. Fung Tak Lun said that in the film industry no one understood the Tai Chi spirit more than Lee Nin Kit and no one knew Tai Chi better than him. Thus he will respect Lee Nin Kit's martial art design suggestions. As for Stephen Chow Sing Chi's project of the same name, Fung's TAI CHI will start production and be released earlier than Chow Sing Chi's. However, Chow Sing Chi earlier registered the title in the Mainland so he still had the title exclusivity. Fung Tak Lun yesterday said that he was uncertain about Chow Sing Chi's new film plan or what his TAI CHI will be about. Huayi will work on the title. In addition, Huayi will start work on the Tom Lin Shu-Yu directed STARRY SKY, Doze Niu Chen-Zer directed LOVE and Pang Ho Cheung directed EVERYONE LOVES TENDER WOMAN.

Director Feng Xiaogang and leads Ge You and Shu Qi two nights ago attended the IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 Hong Kong premiere. Shu Qi and Ge You entered with five couples in wedding wear, but Shu Qi in a green low cut dress stole the show. Shu Qi even read her vows in
Cantonese, but no one understood what she said. Obviously her Cantonese skills have declined.

She apologized for her bad Cantonese. "Sorry, I raped your ears!" She also said that her Cantonese ability did not decline, but has not improved over 10 years. As for the mock wedding with Ge You, she thought it felt pretty good and thought that he matched her well. She also
praised, "He is humble too. Although he often says he wouldn't cheer up a girl, he actually really knows how to take care of a girl! (Are you looking forward to marriage?) I asked him why he got married so soon, actually during the shoot we extended our real relationship!" Did she have any luck at Miriam Yeung Chin Wa's wedding party earlier? She honestly said that she ran into many friends but she was drunk for two days. Only last night she was a little more sober. Speaking of old flame Leon Lai Ming missing Chin Wa's party to avoid her, she said, "Then you have to ask him! (Is seeing him awkward?) We don't need to mention ancient history again!" Speaking of the White Dragon King being hospitalized, she stressed that was two days old news. Master was fine. She pointed out that White Dragon King has always had lung issues. She said that he was wise and kind, but he did not get enough rest when he was sick. Now he could rest a little.

Ge You was asked whether he will work on IF 3. He honestly said that he did not have the third film's script. He personally felt that in general comedy had difficulty exceeding the first film. Unlike it was a box office issue, audience taste would grow as would their demands! Speaking of his film LET THE BULLETS FLY's great response and the chance to be adapted into a Hollywood film, he said that he has not heard any news yet.

His films all have had decent box office. He humbly said that he only performed, a film also had a director and other actors. In addition although several films performed well in the Mainland, their Hong Kong box office was not considered good. Perhaps it was the distance between the
lines! He even said that Shu Qi in IF 2 spoke Beijing accent Putonghua, which might also be a problem for Hong Kong viewers. Did he have any box office pressure? He said that everyone worked together on the entire film, in other words he personally would not have any pressure.

courtesy of takungpao.com

Feng Xiaogang, Shu Qi, Ge You and Ady An Yi Hin yesterday attended a IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 press conference in Shenzhen. They joked that after 2030 they will work work on another sequel. Shu Qi said that Miriam Yeung Chin Wa invited her to her wedding banquet and she will send her a deep well wish, but as for whether she was envious of Chin Wa, Shu Qi said that it was beyond her control.

Shu Qi looked tired when she talked about the production yesterday and often played with her necklace. She said that perhaps the sofa she was on was too comfortable. Will Shu Qi and Ge You work on a third installment? Shu Qi said, "Yes, maybe in 2030. Actually I am just joking. By then Brother You will be 70 and I will be 50." Ge You said that the director should answer that question. Did he and Shu Qi have many intimate scenes this time? He honestly said that he had some on the sofa and in bed. As for kiss scenes, he said no. It was only a pretend kiss. Would he like to have a kiss scene in the third film? He said, "Director Feng said that if those scenes were done well they would be quite nauseating. If the idea is good, even without a kiss scene it is more intimate than a kiss scene."
