Movie Box Review

I'm breaking a few of my own rules here, because I'm posting about a film I haven't seen, a film I have no interest in seeing, and even throwing up some attitude on something that I'm not really interested in discussing and won't likely change my opinion on. But I can't ignore this poster or what it says. Why does this poster read:

"Chick Flicks Don't Have to Suck!" And then have quotes from 3 male reviewers.

Wouldn't it have a little more clout to have some quotes from the women film reviewers out there? And there's got to be some positive reviews out there given that it's 90% of Rotten Tomatoes at the moment (May 16, 2011), although at quick glance there was only 1 female happy tomato-er on the front page of the reviews. When I looked at my go-to gals I found response for both ends of the spectrum with MaryAnn Johanson of Flick Filosopher giving it a Skip It rating and Melissa Silverstein of Women and Hollywood encouraging people to see it.

There is usually 1 film a year that gets me totally annoyed over gender crap. Not the film in it of itself (there is more than 1 a year of those!), but the coverage of the film. In 2008 it was Sex in the City, where all the podcasts I listened to has a 1-time female co-host on to 'help' review the film, as if all the guys were scared to take it one. This year the weirdness feels like it will be centred on Bridesmaids. Even though I rarely see or review comedies, sadly all the brouhaha has me even less interested in seeing it. Ah, well.

Loving the new Thor posters. We have lots of super hero movies coming out this year but I'm holding out that this is going to be the one and it's definitely the highest super hero film on my anticipated films of 2011. C'mon May 6th!

I was so excited last weekend when I went to the theatres and saw 2 of the Book to Film Club posters sitting side by side! On the left we have the I Am Number Four poster, and we read the book in January and the film will be released on Feb 18, 2011 and this is actually a new poster to ones I had previously seen.

And on the right we have the Water for Elephants poster, this is a first-time see for me and it looks gorgeous. There is such a beautiful warmth and longing in the poster and I'm very much looking forward to the book which we'll be reading in March. The film will be releases April 22, 2011.

I've been hearing some buzz here & there about Skyline, an upcoming science fiction/thriller and then when I was out at Machete I saw the poster above. I'm liking the creepy ominous city and lots of use of blue for it. I only checked out the trailer today though, and I love the idea of the film being set in current reality, dropping real names of people and organizations and brings the tones of an ominous alien invasion.

I'll admit I'm not as excited about the video game look and feel of the big effects but I'm pretty much a shoe-in for any science fiction and given that Eric Balfour ("Haven", "Six Feet Under") is in the cast, it makes it all the more likely I'll be chomping at the bit to see this one opening day. Skyline also stars Donald Faison ("Scrubs"), David Zayas ("Dexter", The Expendables), Scottie Thompson and Brittany Daniel. Directed by Colin Strause & Greg Strause (AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem)

I've had the book on my 'to read' pile for a long time, and it's now part of my 2010 Book to Film Challenge and I've got just under a month to get to it! I will, I will, this post is a bit of a reminder of that. I'm curious about the book too, it's one that I think almost all of my women friends have read it and have strong opinions, which makes me all the more curious! The film version stars Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert, and also stars James Franco, Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup, Richard Jenkins and Viola Davis. Directed by Ryan Murphy (Running with Scissors, "Glee" and "Nip/Tuck").

Okay, so neither of these 2 upcoming action movies made My Most Anticipated 2010 Releases - Part 2, but I'm still certainly looking forward to them. I think my expectation of action films has gone down in the past year. I still go to them, and I want to love them, but I'm prepared to be disappointed. Sad, but true. But allows the possibility of happy surprizes so that is something!

First up - Predators!
I'm assuming this is like, Predator 3 and ignoring the two Alien vs. Predators films. I hope so. Theres been a lot of online buzz for this new rendition of predator vs prey, but I've not seen a lot about the film out and about. I snagged the above mini poster from a theatre, but I've never seen a poster at a theatre and only seen the trailer a few times. But canon & casting have me interested enough to get me to see it. Seriously - Adrien Brody in a Predators film? You couldn't keep me away. Predators is directed by Nimród Antal (Armored) and stars Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo, Walter Goggins, Louise Ozawa Changchien and Oleg Taktarov. It hits theatres tomorrow Friday July 9, 2010.

The Expendables
I love this (below) poster for The Expendables and what I've loved about the buzz behind this film from the beginning is that it makes no quams that it's all about the cast. That is what we want to know about the film, and that is why we will go - just put it out there and we'll be there. Transparency at it's best. Sylvester Stallone directs, writes and stars in this resurging the big action film set in South America and following a group of mercenaries . Cast of all star action gurus including Sly himself, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis along with Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin, Randy Couture and Terry Crews.
The original release dates have jumped around about from different dates in April and August 2010 and The Expendables is currently slated for an August 13, 2010 release.

Sometimes timing is a beautiful thing. Yesterday I saw the first poster for Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and as it turns out the trailer for the film just debuted as well! This this is quite high of my most anticipated films of the year list (#3, only after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse). I loved the first two Narnia films (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian), although oddly I've never reviewed them. Four siblings in a world of fantasy, adventure, animals - what isn't to love? I didn't read the whole series as a kid but I am reading them as the films come out. This trailer reminds me that I have no clue what the focus will be, but I have a feeling I'm going to like it.

Even though the IMDb Page does not have them listed, it sure looks like Anna Popplewell as Susan Pevensie, William Moseley as Peter Pevensie and Tilda Swinton as the White Witch are in it from the trailer.

I will say in person, this one really does draw your eye to it and it's simplistic and claustrophobic just like the premise of the film. In Buried, Ryan Reynolds plays a man who wakes up buried inside a coffin. Oddly, I've not dug into the film much more than that as the creepiness has me sold. It's directed by Rodrigo Cortés (Concursante).

I actually love the above poster for The Girl Who Played with Fire / Flickan som lekte med elden, the second in the Millenium or Men Who Hate Women trilogy based on the books by Stieg Larsson. Although I will continue to say that the first film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo / Män som hatar kvinnor, is easy to praise yet hard to recommend, I don't think I'll be able to stay away from the trilogy due to the high quality film making we've seen so far. This film stars Noomi Rapace & Michael Nyqvist, and is directed by Daniel Alfredson whom also directs the third film in the trilogy The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest / Luftslottet som sprängdes.
