32nd Genie Winners

Photobucket

The 32nd Genie Award were tonight and Monsieur Lazhar wins top honours of the night going home with 6 awards including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Directing, Adapted Screenplay, Editing and 2 acting awards for FELLAG for Actor in a Leading Role and SOPHIE NÉLISSE for Actress in a Supporting Role. A Dangerous Method also went home with a hefty set of statues with winning including art direction, score, sound and sound editing plus Actor in a Supporting Role to Viggo Mortensen who wrapped his Genie in a Montreal Canadiens Flag, which was the highlight of the broadcast (although the meta-Andrea Martin non-co-hosting skit was pretty funny). I was a little surprized that the leading out of the gate film Café de Flore which was nominated for a whopping 13 films only won 3 awards but I think goes to show just how strong the competition was this year.

I can't forget to mention that the broadcast had actual on-stage figure skating to the nominated songs. When George Stroumboulopoulos said that, I really though he was pulling our legs. But no, there was lots of leg extension and figure skating. That's a first.

And with that - congratulations to the winners! Let's have a look at them now. They are listed in the order in which they were presented on the live broadcast (best motion picture) plus remaining awards.

32nd Genie Award Nominations

The Genie Nominations were announced earlier today and the highly acclaimed Café de Flore leads the way with 13 nominations. Following closing behind is David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method with 11 nominations and then inspiring teacher film Monsieur Lazhar with 9 nominations. There is more multiple nomination love with The Bang Bang Club with 7 nominations and both The Whistleblower & Starbuck with 6. It's quite a balanced set of noms between French and English films for this years best in Canadian film which is exciting to see. And I certainly have many more films to see before the awards are presented on March 8, 2012. I new I should have gone to more of Canada's Top Ten this year - 8 of their 10 films have been nominated, and many of those in multiple categories. The more celebrations of Canadian film, the better!

Adventure Films As a Film Genre Show Notes
  • Earlier definition of Adventure Film on Wikipedia (source): Adventure films are a genre of film. They typically involve characters who must traverse rugged terrain, solve puzzles, and evade traps while journeying to a treasure-like destination. Generally, adventure films take place outside, in the wilderness.
  • Current Wikipedia definition: Adventure films are a genre of film. Adventure Films are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. Adventure films are very similar to the action film genre, in that they are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the film viewer. Rather than the predominant emphasis on violence and fighting that is found in action films, however, the viewer of adventure films can live vicariously through the travels, conquests, explorations, creation of empires, struggles and situations that confront the main characters, actual historical figures or protagonists.
  • Pirate and/or ‘at sea’ films: Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Pirate Movie, Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Mutiny on the Bounty, Master and Commander, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Pirate-like films: The Prince Bride, Count of Monte Cristo
  • Explorers: The Mummy series, Indiana Jones series, Goonies, King Kong
  • More Action-centric: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
  • Kid-Centric: The Never Ending Story, Cloak & Dagger, Bridge to Terebithia
  • Fantasy-Adventure: Alice in Wonderland, Labyrinth, The Secret of Moonacre, Timetrip: The Curse of the Viking Witch / Vølvens Forbandelse, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
  • Adventure-Westerns: The Good, The Bad and The Weird

Show Notes

31st Genie Award Nominations

The 31st Genie Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday February 2, 2011 and Barney's Version leads the nominations with 11 nods including best motion picture, achievement in direction, nominations in all acting categories. Next up we have Incendies with 10 nominations and this comes hot off the heels of Incendies Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language film.

One of the things I always look forward to with the Genie nominations is getting to sink into some French Canadian titles as we only get a handful released here in Toronto each year on top of festival runs and in 2010 we did see Les amours imaginaires / Heartbeats and Les sept jours du Talion / 7 Days on big screens, but it's time to track down 10 1/2 (out on DVD Feb 15, 2011), Piché: entre ciel et terre / Piché: The Landing of a Man and Route 132.

I'm thrilled to see that many titles that made the Movie Moxie Perfect List of 2010 are nominees including The Trotsky, Trigger, Defendor, Grown Up Movie Star and The Wild Hunt. In fact I ranked The Wild Hunt and Grown Up Movie Star at #4 and #5 overall for the entire year. Looking back, 2010 was a great year for Canadian film.

One of the biggest surprizes on the list is Resident Evil: Afterlife, when I went to see it back in September 2010 the theatre insisted it was not Canadian and on IMDB it's currently listed (Feb 3, 2011) as a Germany/France/UK co-production. Resident Evil: Afterlife has 5 Genie nominations and also winner of the Golden Reel Award, which goes to the Canadian film that has earned the highest domestic box office and it's total Canadian box office in 2010 was $7,026,559.

Reviews of Genie Nominated Films: Incendies, High Life, Splice, The Trotsky, Trigger, Defendor, Grown Up Movie Star, The Wild Hunt, Year of the Carnivore and Leave Them Laughing.
