Michael Hui Koon Man two nights ago performed a charity stand up comedy show.  Friends Nadia Chan Chung Ling, Vivien Leung Siu Bing and others attended.  During the opening, Michael's grandsons presented flowers.  As soon as he opened his mouth he talked about many political figures, including Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam Kuen, Henry Tang Ying Nin, Dr. York Chow Yuat Ngok and others.  The crowd roared in laughter and applause.

Speaking of how the sexes get along, Michael felt that men should know how to act.  He should play a good man in front of his girlfriend or wife.  He joked that thus past Hong Kong Film Award Best Actors have never divorced like Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Lau Ching Wan.  When viewers reminded him that Chow Yun Fat had a divorce with Candy Yu On On, he said, "Before the divorce he was box office poison, after winning the Best Actor award he didn't have another divorce!  Right?"  Speaking of Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Michael could not help but lament, "The newspaper said they are reuniting, the divorce alone went on for two years.  Why?  Because Ting Fung isn't just a Best Actor, next to him is a Best Actress.  I also wish they would be able to get back together like the way it was!"  Although Michael was telling joke after joke, as soon as he mentioned his late brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying he choked up.  "Speaking of absurdity on the plane, sigh, I am very heartbroken.  I am reminding of my brother Ah Ying.  He was the less willing to take a plane, every time he did he had to take a sedative!"

Michael admitted that he has not performed in a long time.  He was so excited that his voice was a little hoarse.  Originally he planned to invite his brother Hui Koon Ying to be his guest, but unfortunately it did not pan out.  He said, "Originally I had some stories about him, but I don't dare to tell them.  I am very afraid that even I wouldn't be able to laugh.  Tonight's audience response was great, too bad my brother couldn't attend."  He admitted that even Sam Hui Koon Kit had the same feeling and was not used to Hui Koon Ying's passing, so he would agree to perform at the Hong Kong Coliseum.  With the busy performance schedule in recent years, Michael said that he would properly rest or perhaps consider film planning.

Sam Hui Koon Kit and his son Ryan Hui Wai Yun yesterday shared their music experience at the Hong Kong University and held a small concert as they performed four hits, including the song that he wrote for his alma mater to celebrate its 100th anniversary.  Sam even performed three encores to satisfy listeners.  As an alumnus he had a lot of memories, revealing that he used foul language, drank and chased girls.  He even also worked many jobs.  Perhaps because he wanted to become a singer since childhood and was vane, he would work every film company and record company job.  Finally he did not even study psychology.  Sam said, "But maybe of my grass root background, I am especially sensitive to grass root people's lives.  My song writing was timelier."  Sam again with the students sang BRIGHT to put an end of the concert.  He said that he was so touched that he almost broke down in tears.

Sami revealed that because he knew university students were not too happy lately, he felt a sense of duty to cheer them up.  What song would he give to the oppressed Hong Kong people?  He again mentioned the song VOICE OF THE PRODIGAL SON, as the lyrics said if it was destined it must be, if it wasn't don't force it.  In addition, speaking of brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying's passing, Sam said that he still missed him.  Sometimes he still wanted to call him and would listen to his songs and look at his photos.  In his April concert, he and brother Michael Hui Koon Man, sons Ryan and Scott remember Ah Ying.

[2012.01.31] MICHAEL HUI SEES ANITA MUI IN HIS DREAM

courtesy of mingpao.com

Michael Hui Koon Man yesterday appeared on a Commercial Radio interview.  To raise fund for Suicide Prevention Services he will perform a stand up comedy show at the Hong Kong Coliseum.  On the program he joked about his late friend Anita Mui Yim Fong.  "Ah Mui after passing told me in a dream that God is a woman."

Hui Koon Man remembered when Ah Mui was alive she said that men no matter they are handsome or ugly, rich or poor love to "screw around".  Ah Mui's dream guy had to be rich and handsome, but she did not run into him in her lifetime.  Hui Koon Man at Ah Mui's funeral said to her photo, in Heaven she definitely will find a good man because all the men who love to "screw around" will not go to Heaven; Ah Mui told him in a dream that Heaven has no man because all men love to "screw around" and are sent to Hell.  Even God's husband is kicked out.

On the Lunar New Year's Eve, Hui Koon Man had a reunion dinner with his family.  Although Ricky Hui Koon Ying who passed away last year was missing, the family was even stronger and learned to cherish those around them.  "I have always loved Ah Ying, but I failed to express it.  In the past I only said no and not allowed to him.  (Sam) Hui Koon Kit always praised Ah Ying as very good so they were the closest.  He so far still has not completely adjusted to Ah Ying's passing."

[2012.01.01] MICHAEL HUI HAS REGRETS FOR HIS STAND UP COMEDY SHOW

courtesy of takungpao.com

Director Clifton Ko Chi Sum's ATV program aired its first episode with guest Michael Hui Koon Man, who talked about his stand up comedy performance experience.  Star of many classic comedy films, Hui Koon Man said that stand up comedy was not only his performance but also his personal interest.  "Back then I watched someone performed stand up comedy in the U.S.  At first I didn't believe that one person would be able to make the audience laugh throughout the entire show.  Later after I saw the whole performance, I indeed laughed the whole way through.  It was wonderful.  Since then I began to study stand up comedy.  In addition I have loved to talk since I was little.  Stand up comedy can satisfy my interest and hobby in this area."

Hui Koon Man performed his first Hong Kong Coliseum stand up comedy show in 2005, which not only fulfilled his dream but also was a lot of fun for him.  However he thought the viewer amount would be the best around 2000 people, because this amount was able to maintain the interaction between the performer and the audience.  During his stand up comedy performance he liked to cite examples and make comparisons with three people, his wife, his daughter and his brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying.  He explained, "If I cited others as examples I might 'insult' them, but my wife, daughter and Koon Ying wouldn't be mad at me.  Regrettably Koon Ying now has already left us!"

[2011.12.23] MICHAEL HUI BLAMES HIMSELF OVER HIS BROTHER

courtesy of singtao.com
courtesy of mingpao.com
courtesy of takungpao.com

Clifton Ko Chi Sum hosted a 53 episode ATV talk show and invited Michael Hui Koon Man to be his first guest.  The program taped at Central yesterday.  Ko Chi Sum revealed that the program would be about culture and art, politics, film industry memories, etc.  Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Raymond Wong Pak Ming and two Chief Executive candidates Tong Ying Nin and Leung Chun Ying were on the guest lists.

Ko Chi Sum said that he invited Hui Koon Man mainly due to his enormous influence on the film industry and stand up comedy scenes.  On the program they talked about their film CHICKEN AND DUCK TALK (GAI TUNG NGAP GONG).  Hui Koon Man admitted that he would like more culture and art related activities in Hong Kong.  He discovered that ATV news in its final minutes would show something with culture or social uniqueness.  In the seemingly dark atmosphere now, this indeed was able to bring the society some balance and joy.

Would he consider inviting Sam Hui Koon Kit?  Ko Chi Sum said that he has.  Hui Koon Man joked, "You might as well invite (Ricky) Hui Koon Ying too.  However this year would be the first time the three of us couldn't share the stage, it would be very special.  I thought about the future stand up comedy shows and how to bring out his image.  Ultimately I am not very used to performing on the stage, I really wanted to have support from my brother."  Reporters suggested that he could use projection like Beyond did.  Hui Koon Man joked, "I could, but if the fake one didn't show up and the real one did, then it would make a great ghost story!"

Hui Koon Man revealed that he still would see his late brother Hui Koon Ying in his dreams and thought that he would owe himself forever.  When he was alive, he often scolded him but Hui Koon Ying liked to be coaxed.  Looking back he should have treated his brother a little better.  Thus everyone should truly cherish those in front of them.  He also revealed that he would probably remember him during the stand up comedy segment and talk about his thoughts about him.  Hui Koon Man said, "I used to love to joke about him and my old lady, I was afraid of insulting others when I talked about them.  I could only force the dead cat on them.  However every time he heard he would crack up backstage."

Ko Chi Sum also said that he was not worried that the program would make the audience too sentimental because sentimental laughter was acceptable.

[2011.12.12] MICHAEL HUI WILL PERFORM A COMEDY SHOW NEXT YEAR

courtesy of mingpao.com

Michael Hui Koon Man on February 10 will perform a stand up comedy show at the Hong Kong Cultural Center to raise fund for suicide prevention hotline.  He said that originally he saved a guest spot for Ricky Hui Koon Ying, but he departed sooner.  He said that this show next year will be the first one that he would perform without Hui Koon Ying.  Every one of his previous performance he arranged for Hui Koon Ying to participate; this time in the show he will also share a lot of Hui Koon Ying memories with the audience.

Hui Koon Ying passed away last month.  Hui Koon Man said that his ashes has already been claimed and his family will spread it at sea.  He said that Sam Hui Koon Kit's mood has already settled down.  Sam also mentioned a show next year, but it would feel different without Hui Koon Ying.  They worked together many times before so it will be very heart breaking.  Hui Koon Man said sentimentally, "There is no reason for my younger brother to go first, and he went so idiotically too.  The doctor told him to go to the emergency room, but he went home to sleep.  He really was an idiot!"

He joked that he would perform the stand up show because his mouth itches and not to grab money.  This time was to raise fund for the suicide prevention hotline, which was something meaningful.  He was very curious about this organization, how at someone's most difficult time it could talk someone out of suicide.  He visited this organization many times for an understanding of its operation and participated in volunteer work.  He thought the volunteers were quite noble and has considered turning this subject into a movie.

Bringing to life many little characters and known as Pufferfish, Richy Hui Koon Ying two days ago passed away due to possible heart condition at the age of 65.  The news of Hui Koon Ying's passing shocked his family and artists in the industry.  Despite his show business performance not being at the level of his brothers Michael Hui Koon Man and Sam Hui Koon Kit, he has played many classic characters and brought endless happy memory to the audience.  Yesterday his fans, netizens and artists all remembered him online.

Hui Koon Ying's heart actually has always had problems.  He just had an operation a year ago and had to rely on a cardiac pacemaker.  Yesterday morning Hui Koon Mo and Hui Koon Kit's sons Ryan, Scott and his wife went to the Fu Shan mortuary to take care of his affairs.  Hui Koon Mo said that so far they still have not decided on what ceremony the funeral will be.  The cause of death would have to wait for the autopsy and would not have a report until a few days later.  He believed that it would be related to his heart disease.  Hui Koon Mo said that two nights ago Hui Koon Ying's assistant had an appointment with him to discuss him but could not contact him.  Later he contacted his family and the police, as well as a getting a locksmith to unlock the door at his home.  He said, "Earlier he has fainted at home before.  The doctor after
examination wanted to put a pacemaker in his heart.  Recently we have always been in contact."  When asked whether he had any unfulfilled wish, he said that he did not know.  However his Japanese girlfriend has been informed of his death.  He did not know whether she was in Hong Kong or whether she would attend the funeral.

Hui Koon Ying was born in 1946 in Guangzhou.  He has five siblings.  The boys were named Man, Mo, Ying and Kit.  Hui Koon Ying was the third.  As adults, oldest brother Hui Koon Man graduated with a
sociology degree from Chinese University and later became the film industry's "cold faced comedian"; Hui Koon Kit graduated from Hong Kong University with a psychology degree and was called "Song God".  Hui Koon Ying did not go to the university.  After graduation he worked as an office assistant.  Later he joined the Shaw's training class.  Hui Koon Ying said that he was never envious of his brothers' achievements and joked that he was only a small character.  Hui Koon Ying in 1971 joined the Shaw Brothers' actor training class.  In 1974 with Hui Koon Man and Hui Koon Ying he created the Hui Brothers film company.  Later Hui Koon Ying and brothers Hui Koon Man and Hui Koon Kit starred in many classic
comedies included GAMES GAMBLERS PLAY (GWAI MA SEUNG SING), THE PRIVATE EYES (BOON GUNG BAK LEUNG), THE LAST MESSAGE (TIN CHOI YU BAK CHI), and THE CONTRACT (MAI SUN KAI).  In films he often played the small time comedy character that was picked on.  In 1985 Hui Koon Ying with MR. VAMPIRE reached his performance peak.  The film was not only a box office hit but he also received a Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor nomination.  However he stuck to his principles, feeling that he should be the lead he turned down the nomination.  Hui Koon Ying was also a singer with hits like MONEY CHILL (FAT CHIN HONG), RUTHLESS NIGHT COLD WIND (MO CHING YEH LAN FUNG) and SISTER SHRIMP AND YOU (HA MUI GUNG NEI).  Hui Koon Ying has never married and no children.  In recent years he had a Japanese girlfriend.

Hui Koon Ying's nephews, Hui Koon Kit's sons Scott Hui Wai Kuk and Ryan Hui Wai Yan yesterday posted many photos with their uncle.  Scott posted, "To my dearest Uncle Ricky, Thank you for all the memories and the love.  You will be missed.  Love you!  R.I.P." and "Thank you for spoiling us with all your toys, games and laughter :)"  He also thanked everyone for their concern and reminded everyone that at was time to remain happy with their families.  Ryan Hui posted, "Goodbye Uncle Ricky!  Your love, care and sweet humor will be missed forever...R.I.P."  Hui Koon Man's daughter Hui Si Hung also remembered her uncle online, "Thank u Uncle Ricky for all the funny jokes and faces...u are always our FUN Uncle Ricky!!!  Always..."

Raymond Wong Pak Ming yesterday at an event was very surprised and saddened.  His deepest memory was from working with him on the film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL TOO (FA TIN HEI SI).  At the time everyone had a lot of fun.  He also asked him to play Sam Hui Koon Kit's mother.  During breaks, Hui Koon Kit played the guitar while he and Hui Koon Ying fought over the microphone to sing.  They also dined together;  however, he said that in recent years he had less contact with Hui Koon Ying and did not
know about his wishes.  He said, "He had no wife, no child, no award, I believe that was his three greatest regrets."  He pointed out that Hui Koon Ying was the most fun among the brothers.  He did not mind too much either.  He was a nice guy and this time should be a great loss to the entertainment industry.

Sima Yin has known Hui Koon Ying for years.  She was very heart broken to hear the news.  She pointed out that Hui Koon Ying was attentive.  When they worked on a film together, he once gave her a swallow shaped pin to her because her name had the word "Yin".  She said, "He was very friendly and familiar, but sometimes he also seemed like he had a lot on his mind."  Rosanne Lui San recently performed on tour with
Hui Koon Ying.  She said that she has known him since 1977.  At the time they met while performing in Singapore and became friends.  She felt very saddened that her good friend passed away.

[2011.06.01] MICHAEL HUI REWARDS HIMSELF WITH SHOES

courtesy of takungpao.com

Michael Hui Koon Man yesterday attended Paco Wong's TVB Life program. In May Michael received the Udine Far East Film Festival lifetime achievement award. Michael joked that everything in Italian was so expensive that even going to the bathroom cost around HK$20. He only bought himself a pair of shoes as reward.

"The shoes cost over HK$4,000. This time they didn't invite me, but because the festival had a Michael Week I had to support it. It also proved that foreigners respected Hong Kong a lot." Was he offered to make a foreign film? Michael said that they asked why Hong Kong had less and less comedy and was less lively than before. Yet Hong Kong in order to coordinate with the Chinese market did not have as much Hong Kong authenticity as before. He hoped to make a movie at the end of the year.

His brother Sam Hui Koon Kit will become a grandfather to twins. Michael joked that his life would certainly change because from now on they would go out in a group of eight. He continued, "After I became a grandfather eight people did everything together, he will have nine. A group of people seems to be very happy but Sam doesn't like to go out. He can teach them to sing and play the piano!" Paco said that he already congratulated Michael and thought that he was the glory of Hong Kong. In addition later he had a movie with a little comedy and suspense that he would like to work with Michael on. The lead actor for now would be Stephy Tang Lai Yun. Hopefully it will be able to start production at the end of July

[2010.09.04] MICHAEL HUI: JOHN IS GREAT AT TELLING STORIES

John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) received the Venice Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, a honor for all Chinese people. Many film professionals are not only happy for him but also feel that he is the pride of the Chinese. Michael Hui Koon Man who has worked with John on films like GAMES GAMBLERS PLAY (GWAI MA SEUNG SING) and THE PRIVATE EYES (BOON GUN BAK LEUNG) is very pleased to hear about his award and says that when they worked together he already knew John really like film. In addition his technique and directing style were very strong. Then after John made A BETTER TOMORROW he knew that he was great with drama too, in particular he excelled in telling stories with the camera. A director has to tell a story with the camera. Michael claims that he did not excel in telling a story with the camera, as he needed both the camera and people to tell his story. Michael also says, "Aside from film I also like fishing and golf, but in John's life film is the most important." Although Michael feels John deserves this honor, to him the award arrives a little early. Michael says, "He still has a lot he hasn't done yet, but in the future he can still do a lot more and can continue his achievement." Will he celebrate with John? Michael congratulates him and says that John earlier has already won many awards and they have celebrated many times. So he is in no hurry.

Currently in Switzerland, Simon Yam Tat Wa honestly congratulates John because he has won glory for the Chinese people. Wa Jai says that in recent years he has been the happiest about Hong Kong film touching foreigners' hearts. Aside from John's awards, Wong Kar Wai, ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW (SHUI YUET SUN TAU) earlier have won awards overseas and made him feel proud to be Chinese. As an actor, he is also inspired to work hard and make good movies so even more foreigners know about Chinese people's emotional world and social conditions. Brother Wa says, "John's movie is very suitable for Hollywood. The ones now are even more general. Hopefully more actors will be able to work with him and everyone can contribute to the world together." Brother Wa also says that he has congratulated John through his manager. As for whether he will celebrate with John, he will have to wait until he returns to Hong Kong first.

Chow Yun Fat who has worked with Ng Yu Sum numerous times feels very happy and touched to see him winning the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award in Venice. Fat Gor praises John for many contributions in film and truly deserves this award. Will Fat Gor take John to dinner to celebrate? Fat Gor says he definitely will and says that next month he and John will go to Beijing to work on THE FOUNDING OF A PARTY together. Then they will be able to have dinner and celebrate. Tony Leung Chiu Wai who has also worked with John endlessly honestly says that as his friend he is very happy about his award. He also feels that he truly deserves
this award.
