Johnnie To Kei Fung two nights ago attended the "NOIR: A Film Noir Retrospective Bridging France and Hong Kong" with the French Consul General in Hong Kong. The event will take place between June 3 and 26, 27 Hong Kong and French films will be screened together. Other guests
included the French Consul General in Macao and Ringo Lam Lan Tung.

For one of the segments, Ah To selected nine films including Wong Tin Lam's WILD, WILD ROSE (YEH MUI GWAI JI LUEN), Ann Hui On Wa's THE SECRET (FUNG GIP), Tsui Hark's THE DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS OF THE FIRST KIND (DAI YUT LUI YING NGAI YIM), Johnny Mak Tong Hung's LONG ARM OF THE LAW (SAN GONG KEI BING), John Woo (Ng Yu Sum)'s A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK), Lam Lan Tung's CITY ON FIRE (LUNG FU FUNG WON), Alfred Cheung Kin Ting's ON THE RUN (MONG MING YUEN YEUNG), Wong Kar Wai's AS TEARS GO BY (WONG GOK KA MOON), Patrick Tam Ka Ming's MY HEART IS THAT ETERNAL ROSE (SAT SAU WU DIP MUNG). Ah To pointed out that in the past French film festivals were focused on recommending French films. This year's special screening would be a cross over exchange with Hong Kong film culture. Thus he selected 80's glorious and classic directors' work. He would like to see his mentor Wong Tin Lam's WILD WILD ROSE the most, because he has only seen in on DVD. As for Tsui Hark's CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE DANGEROUS KIND which was banned at the time, now the complete director's cut would be screened. The film finally saw the light of day again.

Speaking of rumors that Sammi Cheng Sau Man agreed to marry Hui Chi On next year, reporters joked that Ah To's earlier comment of On Jai could not escape Sammi came true. Ah To said that he was only joking. "How could they break up again? It's time to tie the knot! (On Jai hasn't proposed to Sammi at the concert yet?) Then On Jai should perform another show to propose to Sammi, it should be soon, in this or next year. Let me quietly ask Sammi then tell everyone."

Passing away at the age of 83, the funeral of experienced television producer and film director Wong Tin Lam yesterday took place at the World Funeral Home. Wong Tin Lam's son Wong Jing along with friends and family sent his old father on his final journey. Wong Tin Lam's
pallbearers included Johnnie To Kei Fung, Patrick Tse Yin, Kenneth Tsang Kong, Damien Lau Chung Yun, Felix Wong Yat Wa, Benny Chan Muk Sing, Ringo Lam Lan Tung and Yau Nai Hoi. Wong Tin Lam's friends including Liza Wang Ming Chuen, Chiu Nga Chi, Melvin Wong Kam Sun, Deanie Ip Tak Han, Lam Ka Tung, Richard Ng Yiu Hong and Lau Siu Ming also attended.

Lau Tin Chi, Chung King Fai and Wang Ming Chuen gave eulogies and shared with the mourners their experience with Wong Tin Lam. The funeral arranged for a band with Erhu and violin players to perform the TAI SIU YUN YUEN theme song. When Wong Tin Lam's coffin left the altar, the CHOR LAU HEUNG theme song was played. The committee explained the choice due to its lyrics, "Thousand mountains I walk alone, no need to bid farewell". After the funeral, Wong Tin Lam's remains was transported to Cape Collinson Crematorium. Wong Jing broke down after a final glimpse at his father.

Wang Ming Chuen said that over 20 years she was already working with Wong Tin Lam on television series. Wang Ming Chuen said that at the time television had a lot of competition and series was as intense as war. She said, "Uncle Tin lam gave me many good characters. I really miss my time with me. I appreciated him very much." Wang Ming Chuen said, the most recent time she saw Wong Tin Lam was several years ago at her concert. Well known loving couple Wong Kam Sun and Chiu Nga Chi yesterday attended the funeral together. Chiu Nga Chi said Wong Tin Lam introduced them and enabled their relationship to develop into a loving couple. Chiu Nga Chi said, "Uncle Tin Lam's lessons I will always remember."

To Kei Fung said, the entire funeral ceremony did not have much sorrow. Everyone just missed Wong Tin Lam. To Kei Fung pointed out that his mentor was a very responsible film professional. Wong Tin Lam felt that he had to be completely professional no matter what difficulty he faced. Otherwise only he would not be professional enough. After a final glimpse at his mentor, To Kei Fung mischievously said, "Seeing how kind Uncle Tin Lam looked, it's very funny. At first I was worried that I would break down, but after seeing him I wasn't too upset." To Kei Fung was asked if he would make a movie to remember Wong Tin Lam. To Kei Fung
said Wong Tin Lam did too well in life and he already has left a lot of work for the world. It would not be necessary.

Famous director Wong Tin Lam on November 16 passed away at the age of 83. Uncle Tin Lam directed over 100 films, later he joined TVB and produced many classic television series. The funeral began last night at the World Funeral Home. Uncle Tin Lam had many disciples and made enormous contributions to the film and television scene. Last night many film and television celebrities came to show their respect from three lands on both sides of the strait. Uncle Tin Lam's son Wong Jing recalled his father's lesson and grew teary eyed.

Wong Jing and his four sisters yesterday arrived at the altar earlier. The funeral will be a Buddhist ceremony. The funeral committee created a special program for the mourners. Lam Ka Tung and Lam Suet, who have worked with Uncle Tin Lam, also arrived early to help. Uncle Tin Lam's disciples Johnnie To Kei Fung and Ringo Lam Lan Tung arrived after 3PM. Wong Jing spoke with reporters in the afternoon. Speaking of his father's remaining wish, Wong Jing pointed out that Father before passing already saw all the relatives, disciples and the best of friends. He was very fortunate and did not have too many regrets. Burial items were all items that he used in his life. Because they could not be cremated, they could only go as far as the crematorium.

As for lessons from Father, Wong Jing grew teary eyed. He pointed out that Father always said to him, "Son, award is destined. Don't force it." Father has said that to him since he was little. Will more memorial events be on the way? Wong Jing said now is enough and a special
program was published. The Buddhist chant ceremony will be ongoing until the final 7 days. He believed everyone will remember him. He pointed out that Father did not want to trouble too many friends. As long as everyone will keep him in their hearts, nothing too deliberate needed to be done. Wong Jing also pointed out that Chow Yun Fat was working in the Mainland and could not come, but he asked To Kei Fung to send his regards. The funeral ceremony starts today at 10AM. Friends of Uncle Tin Lam like Lau Tin Chi, Chung King Fai and Liza Wang Ming Chuen will give eulogies. His 70s, 80s, 90s disciples Lam Lan Tung, To Kei Fung, Benny Chan Muk Sing, Yau Nai Hoi, Patrick Tse Yin, Kenneth Tsang Kong, Damien Lau Chung Yun, Felix Wong Yat Wa will be pallbearers. After the ceremony his remains will head to the crematorium. His ashes will be at Po Pook Hill alongside his beloved wife.

Ann Hui On Wa was not familiar with Uncle Tin Lam but they have seen each other at TVB and greeted each other. She was more familiar with Wong Jing. Lam Ka Tung said that he had very little opportunity to work with Uncle Tin Lam during his television days, instead in films they
worked together more. They also attended the Cannes Film Festival together. At the time he was responsible for taking care of Uncle Tin Lam. He pointed out that Uncle Tin Lam taught him to be calm at the time because young people spoke fast and played madly. Once he learned about Uncle Tin Lam's passing, he immediately called To Kei Fung to see if he could help in any way.

Wong Yat Wa said that Uncle Tin Lam asked him and Michael Miu Kiu Wai to star in THE LEGEND OF CONDOR HEROES (SEH DIU YING HUNG JUEN). He really appreciated him for giving him a chance to work on such a popular series that has been aired and aired again. Wong Yat Wa pointed out that because Uncle Tin Lam asked him to play this character he had his
achievements today. The last time he saw Uncle Tin Lam was at his birthday. When they saw each other on To Kei Fung's set or in the studio they would talk about their experience together. He remembered during CONDOR Uncle Tin Lam said to him, "Kid, since I ask you to work, you can relax. You can just be yourself. He also asked Sei Gor and Lau Tan to keep an eye on me." Wong Yat Wa said that Uncle Tin Lam made such great achievements and had so many disciples, he conceivably had no regret and would depart with joy.

Guests who came to pay their respects included Monica Chan Fat Yung, Cheng Pei Pei, Manfred Wong (Man Jun), Stephen Chan Chi Wan, Lau Ching Wan, Adam Cheng Siu Chau, Chapman To Man Jat, John Chiang Dai Wai and Lee Lam Lam, Wong Yat Wa and Miu Kiu Wai, Chik Mei Chun and Elaine Lok Yi Ling. In addition, Chow Yun Fat, Louisa Lee Sze Kei, Stephen Chow Sing
Chi, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Liza Wang Ming Chuen and others sent floral arrangements.

Maggie Siu Mei Kei and Dior Cheng Yi Kin also came, but Siu Mei Kei left before Cheng Yi Kin appeared. Cheng Siu Chau said that he took time from his series meal time to pay his respect. He said that originally he was one of the pallbearers but due to the series he could not make time. Chau Guoon said that he learned a lot from Uncle Tin Lam. Back then when they worked on THE BOOK AND THE SWORD (SHU GIM YUN SAU LOK) Uncle Tin Lam said that no matter how tough, even sick, he still had to make the show well. Finally the series aired as scheduled and received good rating. Chau Guoon remembered the most Uncle Tin Lam's spirit of perseverance. Deborah Li said that Uncle Tin Lam was good teacher like a father he was not mean at all. He was very patient with teaching younger generations and full of love. Nick Cheung Ka Fai revealed that he met Uncle Tin Lam through Wong Jing. They have worked together, he was a lovably senior with a kind heart and full of great achievement.

[2010.11.18] TEARFUL JOHNNIE TO REMEMBERS WONG TIN LAM

Wong Jing

courtesy of takungpao.com

Wong Tin Lam not only had countless work but also had many beloved disciples in the industry. They included famous director Johnnie To Kei Fung. Ah To yesterday honestly said that his mentor's passing has sadden him very much as he even broke down in tears.

Ah To said, "Uncle Tin Lam was half my old man. We met in 1973 at TVB, until I became a director and made movies with him as my actors, over 30 years we spent a lot of time together. He not only was my mentor but also my turning point in life. Without him I wouldn't get to be a director. With my form 3 education it was impossible for me to be a TVB director, the chance was slight. Yet Uncle Tin Lam insisted on asking the company to give me a chance. Uncle Tin Lam was my benefactor. Back when when I made a series with (Liza) Wang Ming Chuen, everyday he told me not to argue with Wang Ming Chuen. I said I didn't argue, it was only work friction. This was the work history between me and Uncle Tin Lam, Wang Ming Chuen. The days that we got past, the series that we made many viewers remembered. The programs back then gave us a lot of anticipation and joy. No matter why, Uncle Tin Lam passed, in his life he has created a lot of history. I was very happy to ask him to act, he missed the life on the set very much. He even said my movie THE MISSION (CHEUNG GOR) that he didn't know what I was making, I thought that was an interesting memory."

Ah To also revealed that last Sunday he just visited his mentor. He knew that they had very little time left and a lot of memory flooded back. Ah To said, "When I visited him he still looked at me and asked who I was. He said that he wanted to close his eyes and sleep. (Ringo) Lam Lan Tung and I backed up a little to keep from disturbing him. He was very fat and big. Wong Jing said that his father passed in a peaceful and comfortable manner. He passed in his sleep and was not in a lot of pain, which put us at ease. He left in a big body, which proved that he had quite a will to live." Ah To even recalled going to the Cannes Film Festival with his mentor and said that he was able to go to because his mentor let him. Then he began to wipe his tears as he continued, "Back then when we went to the venue from the streets, 7 or 8 people in tuxedos held an old man, a big guy. A foreigner thought he was the Godfather and asked who he was. Uncle Tin Lam was very happy to hear that. As a film director he said he was very happy to step foot in Cannes. Ultimately we are all film workers, to be a part of world film he felt very honored." When asked about Uncle Tin Lam's funeral, Ah To said that Wong Jing was in charge and felt that the ceremony was unimportant. It was important that everyone remembered Uncle Tin Lam.

Lam Lan Tung followed Uncle Tin Lam in TVB in 1973. He said, "Uncle Tin Lam was my mentor. At the time To Kei Fung and I followed him and made many television series. The deepest impression was THE LEGEND OF THE BOOK AND THE SWORD (SHU GIM YUN SAU LOK). From him I learned a lot, film techniques, how to make television series and movies. Uncle Tin Lam was the first film director to work at the television station. I was very lucky to be able to follow him." He said that a month ago he just dined with his mentor. Was he surprised? Lam Lan Tung said, "He was my mentor, I don't feel well at all. A month ago he was still very happy, had quite an appetite and was in good health. Uncle Tin Lam should have no unfulfilled wish. He was so amazing, made so many movies and television series, had such good disciples and children who treated him well. He lived and ate well, without a care in the world. He always played mahjong. I hoped he would rest in peace and live happily in another place!"

Chiu Nga Chi and her husband Melvin Wong Kam Sun remembered Uncle Tin Lam online. They wrote, "Everyone has always complimented Uncle Tin Lam's show business performance. He was kind elder who was serious about work and glad to teach the younger generations. Many famous directors and famous actors rose under his tutelage. Wong Kam Sun and I are together
because of him as well. I will forever thank and miss Uncle Tin Lam! Uncle Tin Lam, you are the pride of our show business!"
